I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football

So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

I'm not into football bit even im watching it, although insis go to the gym for the first half cos itd be quiet and I could get on all the machines.

For once the news is full of positive news after 16 months of the most atrocious negative and scaremongering reporting its so refreshing to read something positive.

And yes thank god! Something other than covid to flipping talk about!

listsandbudgets · 08/07/2021 06:56

I couldn't give a damn about football.. BUT.. last night I opened my windows just so I could hear the huge cheers of people who do. It was just amazing to hear people so happy and elated and lifted my mood in itself.

After the Ukraine match I was walking along the street and saw a little girl, an English flag painted on each cheek singing as her parents swung her along the pavement. Sheer joy.. I didn't really care about the reason but how lovely to see people happy.

Mummadeze · 08/07/2021 06:58

I am trying to get into it, I am watching the matches, but I just can’t make myself care at all about the result. I don’t know why. I don’t begrudge others but I can’t get into the spirit this year or feel hyped up. It seems meaningless to me too. Wimbledon on the other hand I find much more exciting. I prefer watching tennis to football. And am not especially nationalistic.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 08/07/2021 06:59

Ynbu

I have decided that if "Engerlaaand" win on Saturday then, as a payback for the noise that will keep be awake, when I have to get up at 4AM on Sunday to go to work, I am going to put very loud rave music on and go out into the garden at 10pm on Monday night. Or is it only football fans that are allowed to behave like selfish twats?

Katefoster · 08/07/2021 07:00

Urgh same I hate it.

Just a wee reminder you didn’t beat us ⚽️👍[/quote]
Sorry. I couldn't resist.

drpet49 · 08/07/2021 07:07

@ trappedsincesundaymorn

You are so busy miserable you can’t even get the day right Hmm

Toty · 08/07/2021 07:10

Well I love football but that was the most boring uninspiring game of football I've ever seen. Total contrast to the Spain/Italy game which was full of energy and passion.

JordanPickford · 08/07/2021 07:16

I take it you haven’t been following the whole tournament then?
Soubriquet · 08/07/2021 07:18

I don’t watch football. I don’t enjoy it and I think it’s a bit of a farce tbh

But I’m not going to sit here and tell people they can’t celebrate.

Nietzschethehiker · 08/07/2021 07:19

Oh dear, I realise you think you are sounding edgy and intelligent but just a reminder if you think using the word Sheeple about anything is anything other than simply a facade of intelligence rather than the real thing you are highlighting your ignorance. Youa re attempting to be superior and in fact making yourself the exact opposite.

Yes yes, everyone has heard the theories about football being similar to TV and the opiate of the masses, blah blah. The only people who think this are too uninformed to understand societies use of football to replicate longstanding established tribal interactions. The same way we use other things. Humans have a beautiful way of adding complexity into something that you don't expect.

Forgetting whether it is any of that , because its got less than nothing to do with you what other people choose to celebrate and only the ignorant think it has anything to do with their other life choices. It is simply nice to see people celebrating.

Football isn't particularly my thing. Nor is it DP's. However it has been a nice sign of normality. We both smiled and commented that seeing the celebrations outside the pubs, people smiling and looking forward to something made us smile and feel happier.

I grinned when I heard the cheering last night. I wasn't watching and DP was in bed because its been a busy week. But it was lovely, at one point all we heard were ambulances. Constantly. If you cannot see that hearing cheering and celebration over the ambulances is anything but a good thing the issue is not with other people, it's with you.

You don't have to be a football fan but ot doesn't make you superior to sniff at it. It highlights you as attempting to appear unformed and philosophical and making it glaringly obvious you are neither.

Bagelsandbrie · 08/07/2021 07:25

Why can’t people just try and find the joy in things rather than being miserable?

I generally don’t give a fuck about the football. But this is historical. It’s also so inspiring to see Gareth Southgates personal victory- from missing a penalty and being one of the most hated men in the UK years ago to becoming what he is today and leading the squad the way he has. It’s an inspiring story for anyone having a tough time.

Thefaceofboe · 08/07/2021 07:30

I can’t stand people who are like “ohhh am I the ONLY person who’s not interested in the football”... obviously you aren’t but to even think of writing a thread about it is pretty weird.

Like what you like, but stop being a misery.

KizzyWayfarer · 08/07/2021 07:32

OP YABVVU for using the word sheeple.
To be honest, immediately after Brexit I did find football nationalism really grating as I was feeling so ashamed of my country and it really seemed to mirror that mindless jingoism.
This year I’m not watching the football (think I lack some kind of ‘enjoying sport’ gene) but feel more kindly towards it. It’s not footballers’ fault our government are twats and with the anti-racism stuff and Rashford and school meals, they actually seem to stand for something a bit better, even if not all the fans have caught up. And everyone seems to agree Southgate is a genuinely good bloke.

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2021 07:32

Maybe @BumbleFlump has slept on it and seen the light. 😀

MolyHolyGuacamole · 08/07/2021 07:35

Just because someone isn't into football doesn't make them think they're superior. Stop projecting

You don't think you're superior like the OP? Then the comment isn't directed at you. Reading for comprehension really fails a lot of people in these posts I realise

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2021 07:39

There are so many ways you can entertain and divert yourself without pissing on other people's chips. Or is that your main source of entertainment?

DynamoKev · 08/07/2021 07:41

You lost me at “sheeple” - ridiculous

HennyK · 08/07/2021 07:42

@BirdsandBeesmakinghay

It just bores me to tears. However if it makes other people happy I am glad. I just hate the drunken thuggery and flag waving that goes with it.
This is me.

Can't stand watching it myself and have precisely zero interest in whether we win or lose or draw. Couldn't care less.

But it makes others happy so crack on after the year we've had.

Just dont watch it. No one is forcing you to.

DarceyDashwood · 08/07/2021 07:43

Sheeple - cringe! 🙈

feelingfree17 · 08/07/2021 07:45

I don’t follow football, but when England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 has made it in to the semi final, it’s a must watch. I love seeing everyone loading up in the supermarkets, rushing home full of excitement and anticipation, the empty streets, and then last night all the cheering and pure joy both in neighbouring houses and the Wembley crowd. Who could fail to get caught up in all this especially after the worst year ever. Just what we all need
Roll on Sunday! It’s coming home!

Mammyloveswine · 08/07/2021 07:51

God some people are miserable sods! It's coming home!

Roselilly36 · 08/07/2021 07:53

Good luck surviving Sunday then OP! 🤣

U2HasTheEdge · 08/07/2021 07:55

I am not a football fan, but I watched the game last night (the first one I have watched).

I am tired this morning because I had crowds of people walking past singing and then I had my own two drunk ( young adult) children crashing back home with their friend trying to quieten them down.

Instead of being annoyed I actually enjoyed hearing happy people. It has been so long since I have heard groups of people having fun. I didn't even mind my children disturbing me because it was the first time in a long time that they have gone out and had fun and had something to celebrate.

I really really hope England win!

TheGumption · 08/07/2021 07:55

Mumsnet is so predictable after football. The "I'm just so above the football, I don't care about it and I don't want anyone else to care either" posts. YAWN.
