I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football

So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

OP posts:

hazandduck · 08/07/2021 01:47

Even if you aren’t in to football, without the euros this year we wouldn’t have the current absolute comedy gold of Rob Beckett’s Instagram stories. Give them a watch, they’ll probably cheer you up a bit, OP 😁

You’re not English are you

CorianderBee · 08/07/2021 01:49

@MarsandPluto

What? We invented kicking a ball around? Confused
No we invented the rules of modern football, created the first league and were the first to pay players as professional footballers.
FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 08/07/2021 01:49

TBH I'd have beer with breakfast every day if I didn't have children to teach Grin

Soooo much classism around football. If people want to be stuck up snobs then at least admit it's because you see it as a working class sports. Own your snobbery and you'll get more respect from me.

Also:
Rugby is just passing a ball

Cricket is just hitting a ball with wood

Running is just moving your legs

Tennis is just walking a ball with a bat

See how it's very easy to simplify any sports...and yet it's still a multi billion pound industry. So maybe, just maybe, there's a little more to it than that?

hayley037 · 08/07/2021 01:50

@MissKeithsNeice

Football is football but the amount of money paid to footballers and the amount of money flowing through that industry is disgusting

And just to check, do you have a problem with singers making loads of money? Hollywood stars? CEOs? What about investment bankers?

Or is it just young - often working class -men that you don't feel deserve to be one very wealthy off their talents and hard work?

So strange isn't it. The class system alive and well in the UK, it's going to take generations before we're rid of it and equality truly has a chance to thrive based on these sort of comments.

I imagine the poster is quite happy for bankers to pay sod all in taxes because they wear suits, went to private schools and are her type of class but godforbid a kid from Brent might earn a similar amount through being good at a working class sport.

CorianderBee · 08/07/2021 01:51

@Lisamonwesaa yeah that little girl was poor sport. Should've only had sympathy. I do not sympathise either football hooligans or cruel fans btw. There are certainly dark sides to football including the DV.

1forAll74 · 08/07/2021 01:52

We won, most people very happy, lovely sunny Summer evening. and nobody thought about Covid for a few hours.. and football is highly popular here,and lots of countries too, so what's not to like.!

It’s capitalism market supply and demand plus audience/media rights sales, advertising revenue generation and sports gambling that makes top flight men’s football such a global business phenomenon. Personally football is the sport for the male masses and the amount of concentrated finance in one particular sport of professional men’s football is disproportional to the detriment of most other sports bar possibly Formula One, North American oriented sports such as basketball etc. The audience and fans devotion to other sports is not on the same scale in England. It’s probably a form of tribalism - a sense of belonging connecting strangers over a football match supporting “their” team.
CorianderBee · 08/07/2021 01:52

@Lisamonwesaa you're right apologiesZ football and rugby are the only times we're allowed to feel proud of being English.

MarsandPluto · 08/07/2021 01:52

@slightlysnippy I saw that, and thought it was hilarious .."it came home in 1966" ," was that not the World Cup" Grin

slightlysnippy · 08/07/2021 01:53

@BumbleFlump

Football is a distraction because most people’s lives are actually quite miserable....a temporary distraction from the massive rent, bills, mortgage etc that people have to pay. It’s like a drug. Temporary high. That’s why I used the term “sheeple” because people don’t get the wider function of football in society. The big picture.
Well you sound a tad miserable, that might be you life, but it's not everyone's.
Lisamonwesaa · 08/07/2021 01:53

Im pretty sure when someone loses at one of the above sports you mentioned @FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop domestic violence doesn’t go up 38% like it does when England play football.

CorianderBee · 08/07/2021 01:54

@Furries he was thrilled. In his words 'things like this don't happen to me' ie getting the tickets. He was buzzing. I'm at home and let him take his mate as I'm not that bothered. He'll cherish it forever I think.

LifeinPieces21 · 08/07/2021 01:54

@MarsandPluto

I agree. It drives me mad. Why can't it be more like cricket, where its all done quietly. The media and everyone goes on and on and on about it, it's crazy. Can't really understand this whole "it's coming home" slogan either. What makes England its "home " especially as it has never been "home". If an Italian says it, surely it will mean that its going to Italy! I'm sure the virus is very happy about these super spreader events.
I don't understand your post at all. Makes no sense.

I don't watch cricket but Freddie Flintoff is beautiful.

No idea what you post meant though.

It's definitely an issue, I've commented on a separate thread how its a shame footballers don't raise awareness of this and campaign against it.

But it shouldn't stop those of us who don't beat our partners enjoying the game.

MouseholeCat · 08/07/2021 01:55

It's not like big tournaments like this are regular, nor is it often that England do this well so I kind of feel like anyone grumping over the celebrations right now is being pretty unreasonable.

I watch the Euros and the World Cup. Can't be fussed about the premier league or anything like that though.

It's coming home!!!

I just knew your post would have something to do about Brexit before I even opened it
Losttheequipment · 08/07/2021 01:59

ALTHOUGH.....Much More importantly than boring football c'mon Mark Cavendish two more wins !!!

I don’t know which way to turn for sporting excitement right now
COME ON ENGLAND!!!
COME ON CAV!!!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 08/07/2021 01:59

@CorianderBee no, it's baffling because it just wasn't very funny or clever.

IT'S COMING HOME 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

MarsandPluto · 08/07/2021 02:01

@LifeinPieces21 I mean, the media and everyone doesn't go on and on and on and go absolutely crazy about cricket, I can't understand why football can't be more like that. Football is so in-your-face and loud and dominates everything and everywhere!

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 08/07/2021 02:04

I think Brexit means we gone from being mates with continental EU 27 to global players? Most of everyday life is technically foreign. Most of the food you eat, the energy you consume is care of overseas energy companies, all your possessions are probably made overseas or even if made in Britain contain parts and raw materials from elsewhere.

The only confusion is why still Euro 2020 and Tokyo Olympics 2020?

Hopefully it is coming home and not coming Rome as otherwise the nation will really be unbearably sad and depressing especially as it’s already Covid 1 England 0.

hayley037 · 08/07/2021 02:05

Maybe it's because more people follow football than cricket? Maybe because when something is more popular it gets more airtime in the media?
