For my toddler Dd? Nothing fancy, just something lovely from baby Zara, for example.
I also sort of buy her new outfits to match places/the colours where we are going, to look aesthetically pleasing in Instagram photos etc..I’m weird, aren’t I 😬

Can never have too much ambience

The original post made the OP sound fairly vapid to be fair. She made it sound like she was buying multiple new outfits every month for ever little occasion they left the house all so she could make pretty pictures for instagram.

Then she backtracked to outfits when the daughter needs them, has no interest in showing her daughter off on Instagram etc. It's no wonder posters are a bit confused and vary about what she is saying.

Saoirse82 · 05/07/2021 18:04

I think the whole social media thing is such BS. Its not real life and I find it depressing that this is how people actually think. Why can't they just enjoy the moment!
I think its fine if you want to buy her a new outfit for a playdate but the whole staging photos just seems so shallow to me. Maybe it's an age thing, I'm late 30s so I suppose I don't look at social media the same way as someone 10 years younger, I just think nobody actually cares what other people post or take much interest, they are too obsessed with their own pictures!

true, but posters are making way too much of a big deal for something so minor.

Op posted in AIBU asking was she being unreasonable (clearly thinking she was being no such thing) 🤷🏻‍♀️ You'd have to wonder what she was trying to achieve.
Mamamamasaurus · 05/07/2021 18:17

That's one expensive Insta filter

Consider what message you're sending to your child.

kindaclassy · 05/07/2021 18:18

just the wrong audience!

Social Media is flooded with people doing similar, MN generally tends to look down at social media (again, without seeing any irony Grin )

Tal45 · 05/07/2021 18:20

I don't understand why you buy new clothes for every play date? Is it to try to impress the other parents? Are you taking insta photos there too? Is it just any excuse because you're obsessed with buying your lo clothes? I just don't understand what the point is?

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 05/07/2021 18:24

@TangledTrees

Wait, you dress your toddler as a victorian pauper/ghost when you visit old buildings..? 👻

Op wasn't doubting herself, she was looking for a round of applause (from her audience). Bless.

You seem terribly pleased with this parallel you're drawing and I'm not quite sure why. MN and Instagram are not the same thing at all.

In any case, I like Instagram and I use it myself as I'm sure many other posters here do too. But lots of people seem to use it in a slightly unhealthy way and seem to over-focus on doing stuff 'for the Gram', and the OP's posts reflect a bit of that.

ReluctantNomad29 · 05/07/2021 18:26

I don't really use Instagram but I get what you mean about dressing DD up to match the environment you're in. I do this subconsciously too and I take lots of pics, although they're mainly just for us to look at. I like fashion and looking nice, so I also like to buy DD nice clothes and to have a bit of a sense of occasion when going somewhere.

You've had lots of hate though OP, because many on MN have a weird dislike for women enjoying looks-oriented things. Probably jealousy because they don't look good themselves Grin
Just do what makes you happy, if your DD wasn't liking the clothes she would let you know.

sorryforswearing · 05/07/2021 18:27

My biggest regret is that I bought my DC too many clothes and toys. Not because I was trying to make him Instagram ready or match the occasion but because I was daft. I never minded him getting dirty though. I’ve seen too many children at school worried what their mum would say if they got paint, dirt etc on their clothes.

Oh, get a fucking grip, love. Hate and jealousy?? You can't be serious.

Pathetic effort. Try harder.

ReluctantNomad29 · 05/07/2021 18:35

@GreyhoundG1rl Hit a nerve, did I? Some of the responses on the thread are pretty deranged. It's the same when there's a thread about headbands on babies or professional photo shoots.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 05/07/2021 18:36

I’m not jealous at all.

I’m going out tonight in a floor length white frock to waft about the town hall.

HollaHolla · 05/07/2021 18:36

In the kindest possible terms - no; this is utter madness. Don’t do it. We should all be consuming less, not more. She’ll also outgrow it before getting much use.
Save your money for something more worthwhile.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 05/07/2021 18:38

OP: I'm weird, aren't I?

Morgan Freeman: Yes, you are indeed.

TwinsAndTrifle · 05/07/2021 18:39

Damnit. If only I could be as beautiful as my toddlers trousers vibing with the interior of Costa.

Jesus wept.

ReluctantNomad29 · 05/07/2021 18:41

To be fair though, it is a pretty odd thread to start and I'm not sure why the OP needs the reassurance of strangers on this, or to justify that she's a good mum to people slagging her off who don't even know her.

grapewine · 05/07/2021 18:42

Every time an OP is disagreed with on here, someone will come on to say it's because everyone else is hateful and jealous. So painfully predictable.

I'm neither, btw. However, I think it's sad that children are paraded on social media when they are too young to consent and end up with a digital footprint out of their control.

TwinsAndTrifle · 05/07/2021 18:43

No dear. You haven't hit a nerve.

The idea that anyone is jealous is merely preposterous and PP was highlighting exactly that.

Aghast. Bemused. Appalled. All contenders. Jealous. Definitely not. And it's certainly (personally) not because I'm in anyway unattractive, that I find this whole concept so unsavoury.

No, you absolutely didn't

I'm about to mow the lawn so I've just slipped into a little green cocktail dress.
