AIBU to ignore the notification?

This morning I woke to find a notification on the NHS app telling me I'd been in contact with someone with Covid and need to isolate for 8 days. The only place that can have come from is a farm cafe on Thursday, out for lunch with DH, who does not have the app so has not been told to isolate so isn't going to. He's manager of a large pharmacy and they're on skeleton staff already and have been encouraged to delete app by big bosses. I'm a childminder so will be letting down parents if I close. I've had a pcr test this morning and I'm double vaccinated. The app says to isolate even if its negative as I could still develop covid. But seriously, what's the point of having had 2 vaccines if I'm still going to have to isolate?! But I am usually a stickler for the rules and worry about getting "caught." What do I do?

*Why do you have the app if you're going to ignore what it says? If you're not going to isolate when it tells you to then you may as well delete it

Err, probably because you have to scan in to go anywhere nowadays?*

I haven't got the app. I've never had the app.

@Sparklingbrook

The app is based on evidence and what the scientific experts advise needs to happen

Mmm. I remain unconvinced TBH.

Whilst it might be based on science the way it works (or doesn't work) is based on a technology which cannot deliver on what the science demands. It gives off far too many false alerts because of the technology involved which doesn't detect whether you are masked or another side of a great big brick wall (for example). This means it undermines public confidence in the app and more generally the whole isolation system (lets throw some behavioural science in here because its relevant) and people wonder why you have lots of people shouting 'delete the app'. You also have lots of professional bodies and institutions saying 'this doesn't work effectively' and isn't fit for purpose in certain environments and workplaces - including those who promote health and enforcement of regulations and maybe kind of know about science and technology a little bit.

What gets me here is the blind faith in science rather than making the effort to understand the science - and the technology (and its limitations) and how using the app might actually put your health at risk too (which is something everyone using it should be aware of) because of its flaws and how its not compulsory (for good reason).

A lot of this isn't down to science at all. Its down to technology. Given DH 'knows a little about this', given its his actual profession, I'm not inclined to just go "but the science!!!!" like a complete muppet.

Its not fit for purpose. Its been acknowledged its not fit for purpose. Its been well publicised that it has serious flaws but STILL we have the "but the science" screams who forget, its not about just the science in this case. Its also about the technology but godforbid we mentioned whats been well publicised because otherwise we are evil, selfish fuckers who don't know anything and will kill everyone because of this.

Really?

We are not in the land of conspiracy theorist here. We are in the land of well respected and knowledgeable people and actual research which says its ineffective, misleading and potentially counterproductive.

Its just that the government dont really want to officially admit this, even though they've all be told to switch it off in parliament...

It is the law. If you don’t comply then you are breaking the law. It’s not a difficult decision. I can’t believe you are even questioning it.

No it isn't.

Ofgs. No its not.

This kind of disinformation isn't helpful either.

There is no legal requirement to have the app. Once you have downloaded it, there is no legal obligation to do what it advises.

There is only legal obligations if contacted by test and trace, if you have travelled from a place you need to quarantine or you have otherwise been told by public health (eg via schools).

Ignoring a self-isolation request from the app was confirmed as legal by government in September last year.

If you would like to Google this, please go ahead. You are looking for news articles around the 24th September.

You are looking after other people’s children, how can you possibly think it’s ok to ignore this!

Lavender24 · 05/07/2021 11:53

Another vote here for delete the app and ignore.

flossletsfloss · 05/07/2021 11:56

Delete and ignore, this is ridiculous. It has to end.

Because the app is not fit for purpose and can give faulty notifications.

MAYBE READ THE THREAD
  1. she's said she is
  2. there are well documented reasons to ignore the app
Hallyup6 · 05/07/2021 12:13

I'd have just ignored it, although I've never had the app precisely to avoid situations like this. I also wouldn't have bothered asking a load of random strangers who would obviously have a load of conflicting opinions. I'd have just kept quiet.

Because it means nothing.

It means your phone was possibly in the vicinity of a another phone who's owner used it at some point to record a positive test.

The app is faulty.
