Responding to people asking why I'm not wearing a mask

I can't wear a face mask and am exempt due to having issues which make it extremely uncomfortable and difficult to wear. At the start of the pandemic I used to explain to people who asked why I can't, but I was getting some nasty comments and it's made me quite cynical. When someone asks now, I just tell them to mind their own business.

AIBU? I think that rather abrupt response probably would sound unreasonable from the perspective of someone who has just asked a single question, but I have been getting questioned (feels more like an interrogation sometimes) for nearly a year and I am just sick of it.

Mixed feelings about it after some 'well meaning/mad' antivaxer bicycled around the town berating anyone wearing a mask that they 'don't have to' & 'it doesn't work' and offering anyone and everyone a freshly laminated copy of an exempt card.

I could be exempt but choose to be slightly uncomfortable and protect others.... though some (like the guy I mentioned) I have been tempted to whip off my mask and look at the sun for a couple of seconds (makes me sneeze)... I have never felt the need to confront anyone with an exemption card but have had a word twice to a store manager... one helpful (aldi) - one not helpful (every lidl doesn't help) might be down to individual managers

@Vynalbob if you're able to put on/wear a mask, you're not exempt. I appreciate that some people's conditions fluctuate and they may be able one day and not the next, or wear one for short periods of time only. However on the occasions you're able to wear one, you're not exempt - particularly if wearing one only makes you 'slightly uncomfortable'. Slight discomfort doesn't confer exemption.

I couldnt care less if you done wear a mask or why... but people who don't need to keep their distance even more. Twice yesterday maskless people looked into my babys pram at close range. That's just selfish and dangerous.

They don’t mean you are exempt from wearing a mask. They annoy me. I don’t want a security guard looking at my chest.

Staring at your chest?? Really?? Glancing maybe!

Makes me feel sad people are so unkind.
It's so hard to ignore it you feel hurt and humiliated

Masks make me feel safer and others are also courteous as we are all united in fighting this pandemic together without fuss or feeling exceptional, different, ignorant or selfish, reckless and irresponsible.

I will be wearing my mask
I have got this far and I would like to stay safe in the future.
