AIBU - Saturday Night England Match??

Hey everyone, please help me…
This Saturday we are due to go out with my parents to celebrate their special wedding anniversary. We are going out to a low key basic chain restaurant with our kids and my brother and his kids and we have two tables booked for 7pm. This arrangement has been in place for 1 week and we all live local so no special guests travelling from miles around to attend. Last week when we were arranging the evening we didn’t even consider the Euro fixtures but because England won last night and are playing on Saturday night we REALLY want to watch the game! I asked my parents if they could change the booking by half an hour which would allow us enough time for a leisurely dinner and taking into account the drive home this would enable us to watch the 2nd half. I have checked at the restaurant and there is plenty of availability to make a slightly earlier booking but when I spoke to my parents last night they have refused, point blank refused to change the booking by half an hour from 7pm to 6.30!! There is no reason other than they don’t want to. I haven’t asked them to rearrange the date I just want to bring it forward by 30 minutes but I have been made to feel guilty for even asking and I’m so angry they they can’t be more flexible to allow us to watch just part of the England game in the quarter finals. My husband doesn’t even want to go now.
Am I being unreasonable?

Hopefully she saw the second half, that’s when three out of the four goals were scored. And yes, this England team is something special, even I can see that, as someone who doesn’t like football normally.

It might even be coming home !! Maybe ..

I hope so too but it seems unlikely that she saw much; she wanted to move the time forward by 30 minutes specifically so that, although she'd miss the first half, she'd still be able to watch the second half.

Evening all, so a little update…
We went out for our meal and everything was fine and we were all jolly and upbeat and nothing untoward was mentioned so I think I’m still in their will. We didn’t even hear the score in the restaurant, however as we walked back to the car it was party central with so many people singing “it’s coming home”! We’re now home and have watched the game. Woo hooooo… you’ll be pleased to hear that our diaries are cleared for Wednesday night and Sunday night so no more AIBU posts from me regarding watching the England play.
As a side note - I don’t think you have to be an avid football fan to want to support your country and feel the buzz of your national side winning in major tournaments. The atmosphere in town was amazing and it was so good to see people connecting and celebrating so I think after the year we’ve had this is something that brings people together!
Come on England!!

Not long ago, I’d have replied ‘pigs might fly’. Now I wouldn’t say that at all, there really is a chance, though I still think it will be Spain or Italy who win, beating England in the final.

But we do have a chance, going by our performance so far. Smile

Hooray!!!! I've only just seen your post but would have said YWNBU and your parents should have changed the time slot. But either way - sorry you've had such vitriol and OTT responses from people, MN can really be a nest of vipers.......

Glad your family meal went well, and let's hope that football's finally coming home!! But assuming not - let's all enjoy the next game/s!

Me too!

So many people are so doom and gloom whenever it comes to England, all these ‘it’s not like it’s the World Cup final’ comments are missing the point I think. We’ve got all the way to the semi finals in the Euros without conceding a goal!
I’m absolutely buzzing

@ILoveYou3000

She wasn't missing anything, she was having a great meal with her parents! Since when is that missing out??

How do you know it was a great meal? And yes she did miss out. OP is a football fan and missed an excellent game.

She could also have still had a 'great meal' with her parents from 6:30-8:30 instead of 7-9 and been able to watch the second half.

I don't know that, but the point is, the football seems to be more important to this person than her parents. Her parents' wedding anniversary dinner seems to be an inconvenience which is keeping her away from her TV.
Tigresswoods · 04/07/2021 08:28

In support of OP I couldn't care less about someone else's wedding anniversary.

Again I'll ask (although bit pointless now as it's passed, still I'm curious) what was the difference between 6:30-8:30 and 7-9? The exact same amount of time was spent celebrating as would have been if they'd met half an hour earlier.

She didn't refuse to go abs celebrate she simply wanted to go a little earlier.

Anyway glad it all went well OP.

Brefugee · 04/07/2021 09:17

Sounds like it worked out in the end. I did think of OP out for her meal when all my friends online (we were in a big chat) suddenly went "was that a goal, my whole street just cheered" when the first goal went in.

In support of OP I couldn't care less about someone else's wedding anniversary.

That's a bit shitty but you do you. Parents milestone wedding anniversaries are quite the thing in my family. And when the Queen has them, we get stamps and all sorts so it's not uncommon.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 04/07/2021 09:41

the game was a walk over
