To feel quite pissed off about the lack of summer so far

Where I live it's due to rain again all next week. Not expecting it to be scorching but even a break from all the rain would be nice, with it being July tomorrow. It feels like the summer is going to pass us by without it ever really happening.

I enjoyed the 2 week.summer we had in London but hoped it might be slightly longer.

Rainallnight · 01/07/2021 00:06

YANBU at all.

I also think it’s made worse this year by all the time we spent outdoors in fucking freezing Winter lockdown this year. I feel like I’ve been longing to feel the sun in my bones for months now, and it’s just not happening.

(I also reserve the right to complain if it gets too hot! Grin)

OrangeFluff · 01/07/2021 00:57

Yep, I’m another pissed off with this weather. West Midlands- rained the entirety of May, about one week of lovely sunshine in June and then back to rain and grey skies. Where is summer?!

Nsky · 01/07/2021 01:13

It’s crap, after crap spring

safariboot · 01/07/2021 01:28

YABU.

Have people got the memory of a goldfish? We had a week or two of very warm weather earlier June (which brought out all the heat haters). We'll probably have some more like that to come.

If you want constant heat all summer, emigrate.

Bythemillpond · 01/07/2021 01:34

I think the crap weather and the over priced staycations will make it harder next year to attract all bar those who would never dream of going abroad, back to having a UK holiday.

I think there are areas of the country which are having nice weather and are holiday area but I wonder if enough of these areas are going to get enough good weather to change people’s minds about how the U.K. just doesn't get the heat and abroad is the only way to guarantee Sunshine
And is so much cheaper.

ilovesooty · 01/07/2021 01:34

Yes we had warm and sunny weather for a couple of weeks in June.

That was it. If I could emigrate I would.

Bythemillpond · 01/07/2021 01:37

You have to be kidding

2 Weeks.
As opposed to
50 weeks of crap weather

I would love to emigrate. If I could persuade the family we would be on the first plane out of here.

I find forecasts pessimistic. Seems like they'd rather predict rain that doesn't happen than not predict rain that does. Last week the BBC was saying rain but I chanced it on going out anyway and what do you know, no rain and perfectly nice weather for the park.

UrbanRambler · 01/07/2021 02:47

I agree, it's been a poor summer so far. Down here on the south coast of England it rained for most of May, then we had sun at the end of May and the first 2 weeks of June - it was actually a bit too hot for me at times, but I was grateful for sunshine.

Since mid June we've had lots of rain and grey skies, coupled with humid nights - just miserable. I know we can't expect endless sunshine in the UK, and we've only had two long hot summers that I can remember in my lifetime (1976 and 2018, I think?) but after the arctic April and wet May, this crappy weather is a bit depressing now. I'm happy that people in Scotland and Ireland are enjoying some sunshine though, that makes a change for them, I bet they are really enjoying the nice weather. Envy Trying not to feel jealous... failing.

Saoirse82 · 01/07/2021 02:50

I'm in Ireland and we are having a few scorchers! Although tbf we deserve it because the weather is always shite in Ireland, even more so than in Britain.

LoveFall · 01/07/2021 03:11

I know how you feel, having experienced many rotten summers in the Pacific Northwest, but be careful what you wish for. We have been under the infamous "heat dome" for almost a week. It is beyond uncomfortable. Almost 100 F in our apartment last night. So hot outside it feels like a blast furnace.

I don't think I will ever complain about cool weather again.

Monty27 · 01/07/2021 03:25

I'm on holiday in NI how happy I am not to be where I live in London.
I thought I'd learned how to pack when I visit here eg rainproof clothing. Brought all the wrong clothes as usual 🤣

UrbanRambler · 01/07/2021 03:46

@LoveFall That heat dome sounds awful - too much of a good thing. The weather does seem more erratic than it was when I was a teen in the 70s - climate change seems to be happening (I'm not convinced it's all man made, but the industrial revolution and other advances have almost certainly played a role). I guess we all have to adapt to the new "normal" and just mitigate the damage as best we can.

rubydoobydoo · 01/07/2021 04:11

There hasn't been lack of summer - this is just what British summers are always like! We've had a couple of weeks of very hot weather, been lovely here today too although it was a bit chilly last week.
August is normally hotter than July.

Remember that year Rihanna had that Umbrella song out and got blamed for it pissing it down all summer?

HarebrightCedarmoon · 01/07/2021 04:19

I don't care, the schools haven't broken up yet, we had lovely weather at half term and after that, and the cooler it is at night, the better I sleep.

garlictwist · 01/07/2021 04:50

Weather has been amazing here this week, really hot and sunny. (Cumbria). This never happens so I am loving it! Prob won't last though.

Peppallama · 01/07/2021 05:11

I'm ok with it. I was pregnant a few years back on that week where we hit 37. I still feel warm from it, it was horrendous. The thought of 47s like they've been getting in Canada scares the life out of me.

Agreed.

But if you get even a couple of weeks of decent weather you get loads of people yearning for crisp autumn, hunkering down, blankets and cosy.

NatMoz · 01/07/2021 05:23

We've had a week in Cornwall and other than one day it's been beautiful! Have been in the sea and lots of coastal walks!

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 01/07/2021 05:31

I have been shivering under a rug indoors a lot of the time. Fed up with it.

IamEarthymama · 01/07/2021 05:39

On holiday in Glastonbury at the moment.
It was so cold in Wales last week that we have jumpers, coats etc with us and fully expected to need rain kit every day. On Saturday and Sunday evenings we stayed in and watched Glastonbury Festival highlights on TV in the evenings as it was quite chilly.

it's been dry apart from one dreadful storm and after those cloudy days at the weekend we are baking in the sun.

We ate outside in a lovely new restaurant garden last evening and walked home in the Gloaming. It was so warm we felt as though we were on a Greek island. (Especially after the amazing Middle Eastern food!)

We have a black dog so it's been early morning and evening outings for us for 3 days.

I can't believe how lucky we have been really though with the dog the cloudy days were easier. Typical UK holiday though, you have to plan for all contingencies.

OP I do feel for you, dismal weather in the summer months really does bring the spirit down. We are stoic during the winter and make the best of things but I still have an inner belief that we 'deserve' a nice summer in return ☺️

EssentialHummus · 01/07/2021 05:47

We had two weeks of summery weather in London, preceded by unseasonable cold, and followed by (so far) three weeks of pissing rain.

AwkwardSquad · 01/07/2021 05:56

It’s been generally sunny and warm in my corner of the north east. A bit cooler this week but even then, the days have been turning out better than the weather forecast.
