40,000 Fans and No Masks

DadAManger · 29/06/2021 18:44

Watching the football. Yes, I like the football.

But WTF, no masks (literally not one mask) and hugging and kissing like it’s a San Francisco in 1980.

This pandemic is over then? My kids aren’t being sent home from school again, I can spend time sitting with my grandmother at home? I know I will be told ‘life has to go on as normal’. I think I have lost my mind - I just don’t understand anymore.

All the posters saying about the testing, read Stephen Reicher's twitter

Pandasarecool · 29/06/2021 19:34

@Roselilly36

Great to see people having fun. I swear some never want life to return to normal, and seem to relish restrictions, continue wearing your masks, but let people who don’t want to enjoy life get on with it. This charade has gone on for way too long.
I’m totally for life to return to normal, I can’t wait, what I’m against is some restrictions easing for some for example football but not everyone else. All restrictions should be lifted.
TSSDNCOP · 29/06/2021 19:35

But kids aren't wearing masks in school unless they want to.

Also, since it's likely that T1 will likely have a staggered start to get everyone tested kids going into Y7 will have the school to themselves on the first day.

Rainalldaylong · 29/06/2021 19:36

And the Wimbledon too 🤷🏻‍♀️The issue is parents being told they can’t watch a sports day, even stood apart etc or a school play wtf!!

RainbowANDThunder · 29/06/2021 19:37

Its outside!!!

My children's school are still insisting on masks
TSSDNCOP · 29/06/2021 19:38

The issue there is with the school I think. I have been to watch school cricket and am going to sports day.

TSSDNCOP · 29/06/2021 19:39

Earthy, I think your school are misinterpreting the current DfE guidance.

It's because it's football. It's always the same on MN. The 40,000 pissed fans comment is typical. If it was cricket or tennis, there probably wouldn't even be a thread commenting.

Are you saying that because schools are taking such a restrictive stand that the relaxation of restrictions shouldn't go ahead?

That's the wrong way round, schools need to stop their approach rather than the rest of us being kept under restrictions because of one sector that is out of step with pretty much every other one

Lobby for schools to change not for the rest of the country to go backwards

SimonJT · 29/06/2021 19:42

@earthyfire Unless your children attend school in Scotland, then the school are choosing to make their own rules rather than following advice from DfE.

TheMotherlode · 29/06/2021 19:42

The problem is not maskless fans at football it’s the other restrictions that need dropping

Yes, absolutely. I think it’s fantastic that we have concerts and sporting events happening now, I fully support that, but not whilst other restrictions are still very much impacting on people’s daily lives. My DH is not allowed to go and visit his dying grandmother because of restrictions on numbers of visitors to her care home, I just don’t understand how that can be justified whilst people are crammed into stadiums.

And please nobody talk to me about or these are test events, there are choices to be made as to what to prioritise under those schemes, and the government has chosen to prioritise sporting events over people spending time with their families.

This too.

The OP will have had the thread ready to go before the gates opened.

MorganKitten · 29/06/2021 19:46

Do you feel the same about the Wimbledon crowd?

For Wembley every has to test before going, the stadium is half full if that.

TheGenealogist · 29/06/2021 19:46

@Theluggage15

Blah blah blah. Absolutely brilliant atmosphere, so good to see the crowds back. Couldn’t care less what people like you think.
Exactly!

I'm Scottish and yet it's lovely to see so many people having a fab time at Wembley or Wimbledon.

maddiemookins16mum · 29/06/2021 19:47

YABU. We’re nearly 16 months in, let’s get on with life.

AntiSocialDistancer · 29/06/2021 19:51

Funny how large scale competitions can go ahead when it's a "test event" and also that players are not classed as close contacts.

One rule for them.

And to be clear for the hard of thinking - the problem is not that the football should have gone ahead, but the massive restrictions so many of us are still facing.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 29/06/2021 19:52

And please nobody talk to me about or these are test events, there are choices to be made as to what to prioritise under those schemes, and the government has chosen to prioritise sporting events over people spending time with their families

but nobody is stopping people spending time with their families - it's been six people indoors for ages now. I understand what you say about the care home and it is utterly ridiculous when someone is terminally ill anyway. But I also saw an article on the BBC about a hospital refusing permission for parents to visit their dying son - incredibly sad, but 100% down to the hospital arse-protecting and totally unrelated to test events.

The problem with the football isn't the event itself, it's the travel to and from.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 29/06/2021 19:53

Well the thing with the Scottish player and the Scottish team not having to isolate but two England players who hugged him having to was just bizarre. I just don't believe that the Scottish players didn't hug each other!

Same here. But the dementors are hovering - they want us all masked and locked down forever.
MyDogCalledMax · 29/06/2021 19:55

YABU - it’s time to get back to normal.

Youdoyoutoday · 29/06/2021 19:55

Wembley seats 90000 so it's open at less than half of its capacity with measures in place.
I know it's a ball ache but we really can't live on pause forever.

Freckers · 29/06/2021 19:59

Great scenes. Glad we're sensibly increasing what we can do at a sensible rate.

(Gonna ignore you SF 1980 comment. For now).

MagicSummer · 29/06/2021 19:59

I so wish Ingerland had not won - more drunk louts on the street over the next week. I so hate football and everything it stands for.

Doris86 · 29/06/2021 20:01

You’re completely missing the point OP. This was an event to trial returning to normality, with the attendees having regular covid test to monitor infection rates. That’s why there were no masks. Normality after 19th July won’t involve compulsory mask wearing.
