40,000 Fans and No Masks

353 replies

DadAManger · 29/06/2021 18:44

Watching the football. Yes, I like the football.

But WTF, no masks (literally not one mask) and hugging and kissing like it’s a San Francisco in 1980.

This pandemic is over then? My kids aren’t being sent home from school again, I can spend time sitting with my grandmother at home? I know I will be told ‘life has to go on as normal’. I think I have lost my mind - I just don’t understand anymore.

@User135644

Bread and circuses. Got to keep the men sedated with football
Of course, because only men watch football. Whilst we're all at home cooking and dusting.
Thiscantreallybehappening · 29/06/2021 19:25

YABU it's past time for life to return to something normal. Commonsense has now been given the go ahead to reign again. Thank god!

Yes, but why only in the sporting world?

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 29/06/2021 19:26

@Thelm

I want to know why I am stuck in the house for ten days. Despite having had both jabs and a negative test.

When it seems like others can do what they want. I’m being hounded daily by track and trace. They won’t leave me alone.

We are either back to normal or we aren’t.

I know the answer to that, we aren't back to normal, no one has ever suggested we were. I don't understand your point.

I keep forgetting all the shops are still shut, all outdoor music events are cancelled, restaurants are closed and non-essential retail is shut.
TSSDNCOP · 29/06/2021 19:27

If the Cambridge's test positive they could take out the Beckhams, and Sheerans Shock

AliceLivesHere · 29/06/2021 19:27

@MagicSummer

Completely agree and I HATE football! It's absolutely stupid.
So don't watch it then. Sit at home and moan along with the OP about the lack of masks outdoors as much as you want then. You should buddy up together you will have a wail of a time wailing and moaning.
BringBackThinEyebrows · 29/06/2021 19:27

I watched the match and loved seeing the fans having a fab time! Didn't notice anyone kissing though.

Everyone tested and at an outdoor event, I don't see an issue.

MrsTophamHat · 29/06/2021 19:27

It's been lovely to see. I think it's time to get back to normal now and I support an end to all restrictions, but I completely understand why they are running test events such as this. Clearly some people will need reassurance that we can in fact do things together.

Doyoumind · 29/06/2021 19:27

It's not only the sporting world. There are test music events. Sports and music are the events where there are large crowds. What else do you suggest?

BoomChicka · 29/06/2021 19:28

@TheRosesOfSuccess See I don't mind the fact the fans are there, I wish ALL events could go ahead this summer, but the government are not letting fans into the Euros as any kind of experiment that will influence the 19th July rules - if they publish a full report with findings, including the final on 11th, by the 18th July I will be incredibly suprised.

randomkey123 · 29/06/2021 19:28

Given that the bulk of the population are wearing cloth/fabric masks with knackered elastic, I fail to see how they are even helping by 0.00000025% let alone 25%........

DadAManger · 29/06/2021 19:28

@ doyoumind - so if the test results show there are a pile of cases from tonight, the next matches are off? When do we get the results and do we act on them? Or do we carry on with each game anyway - up to 60,000 at each game for the semis and final - and then slowly mull over the results during August when it is all too late?

We aren't back to normal. Unless being doubly vaccinated or testing negative for a virus before being allowed to attend a - reduced capacity - sporting event is normal. Which it isn't.

No, but the capacity of a game held in the UK would likely be reduced. It really doesn’t take long to gather and analyse very basic stats.
WingBingo · 29/06/2021 19:30

Everyone has been tested or vaccinated.

Can’t do that at sports days, weddings or massive parties.

earthyfire · 29/06/2021 19:30

The only reason I have an issue with it is because all my children's school transition and activities have all been cancelled and they are still being forced to wear masks, treated like second class citizens.

Roselilly36 · 29/06/2021 19:31

Great to see people having fun. I swear some never want life to return to normal, and seem to relish restrictions, continue wearing your masks, but let people who don’t want to enjoy life get on with it. This charade has gone on for way too long.

lifeinlimbo2020 · 29/06/2021 19:32

@millymollymoomoo

The problem is not maskless fans at football it’s the other restrictions that need dropping
Yes. This. It's the hypocrisy that is the frustration for me. Cases are rising but the hospitals are fine. Let's crack on with life.
Thiscantreallybehappening · 29/06/2021 19:32

Sky news linked Stephen Reicher's twitter today, he said it is impossible to know what the spread of virus from these test events is because only 15% of people actually do the tests before and after the event. I'm assuming 100% have to do a test prior to the event or they wouldn't get in but in total only 15% do both tests. He linked the PHE report on the findings.

I agree, life has to get back to normal but it does seem to all revolve around sport and as much as I love sport (especially wimbledon) I am a bit baffled at seeing all these people in close proximity with no masks when my DC's education is still disrupted, still can't see a doctor face to face, still have to sit in the car outside waiting to be called in by the dentist and so on. Sorry, but I would like everyday life to function normally first.

Pandasarecool · 29/06/2021 19:32

I agree. Can’t sing at a wedding or funeral (if you can even attend due to numbers) but can cheer and in the process spit over each other at a football game.

Theluggage15 · 29/06/2021 19:33

Blah blah blah. Absolutely brilliant atmosphere, so good to see the crowds back. Couldn’t care less what people like you think.

Why would supporters testing positive have any effect on whether the rest of the tournament goes ahead?

Football without crowds has been going on for ages. In the ridiculously unlikely event that all the attendees today have a positive result in 5 days time then they'd simply play the rest behind closed doors.

Sallycinnamum · 29/06/2021 19:33

I said to my DH I guarantee there will be a misery fest on MN at seeing all those football fans having a good time and celebrating what was a fantastic England win.

This.

It was great to see so many people enjoying a fantastic event, even watching on TV!
