Surely you would have cameras in a Government building and surely pointing it at doorways between different areas or departments isn't a bad idea.
It looks like a screenshot of a cctv security camera monitor.

Oh god we're allowed to sneer at politicians

When did you make up that rule? Sneering is sneering.
.
Its sneering about the thickness of taxi drivers that is rather crass and unpleasant

Except nobody did. Your post is the first to make any reference to “thickness”.

Peregrina · 02/07/2021 13:01

Well a win is a win but I think you're overeggging this somewhat. She won by 300ish so just as well they 'threw the kitchen sink at it.

I don't agree. Given the intimidation she put up with she did well. Also the seat has been Tory in the past - from 1983 to 1997, so with a Tory Government which can apparently do no wrong, it should have been fairly easy pickings for them.

Roussette · 02/07/2021 13:03

This is spot on from Keir Starmer, on the result. Plenty enough charisma there for me. But it's what he says that matters.

@JaniieJones

'I’m in the Batley & Spen constituency. In my opinion this by-election was all about local issues rather than national ones. Labour absolutely threw the kitchen sink at this one to win, I’ve never seen so many election leaflets. Kim is a popular choice, and the right one'

'Who’s sneering now?'

Oh god we're allowed to sneer at politicians. Its sneering about the thickness of taxi drivers that is rather crass and unpleasant.

George Galloway split the red vote. He appealed to disillusioned red voters with the intention that Labour would lose and oust Starmer.

If GG hadn’t stood Labour would have had a larger majority. The bookies were backing a Tory win right up until yesterday.

jgw1 · 02/07/2021 13:20

@JaniieJones

'No one has reported how much the government paid bribed them to build in Sunderland. People have been asking but no answer'

Well if they've invested so what! if it's kept production and expansion in this country that is a good thing.

I agree that nationalisation can be a good idea. Starting perhaps with the railways. It is beyond daft that the British government pays the nationalised railways of other countries more than it would cost to run it themselves to run train services.

I signed this about 15mins ago but hope nobody has put a kibosh on it because I'm still waiting for an email to click in my inbox before it counts. The total count was stuck on 457 for ages.

I bet Gareth Southgate will look at this photo put out by No.10 today and think 'what a knobhead'.

Does anyone look at that and think now there is an inspirational leader who I want to be in charge?
ancientgran · 02/07/2021 17:40

@TheMagicDeckchair

I’m in the Batley & Spen constituency. In my opinion this by-election was all about local issues rather than national ones. Labour absolutely threw the kitchen sink at this one to win, I’ve never seen so many election leaflets. Kim is a popular choice, and the right one. Tracy Brabin wasn’t well liked in the constituency but in the 2019 elections a popular local right wing independent candidate split the blue vote.

Tory candidate refused to reply to any of our questions. I dare say the Hancock drama didn’t help. I think some “soft” tories, fed up of the Tory sleeve, lent their support to a local candidate who has strong roots in the area.

I think GG’s behaviour bought labour extra votes. His intention was to oust Starmer.

Well done Kim.

Good to hear from someone "on the ground" so to speak. I hope all goes well for Kim and all in the constituency.
Roussette · 02/07/2021 17:42

Another one bites the dust. Needless to say any divorce is sad for the kids.
She did write a scathing piece about men in power and their wives recently.

Classica · 02/07/2021 17:45

'they remain close friends'

After her column last week? I'm not so sure...

jgw1 · 02/07/2021 17:46

When did the Conservatives stop trying to be the party of family values?

DeadButDelicious · 02/07/2021 18:17

I though that column she wrote was particularly 'pointed'.

the80sweregreat · 02/07/2021 18:24

It's all falling apart for them on the marital front ; Boris is probably thinking ' been there , done that ' as he examines his depleted bank accounts!

TeddingtonTrashbag · 02/07/2021 18:25

Yes I read the article after MNers had spotted the coded message. I don’t think I would have noticed, but I agree. ( I am always the last to spot affairs - colleagues could be dallying on my desk and I’s assume she lost an earring that fell into his lap 😀
Blossomtoes · 02/07/2021 18:26

Thank goodness Rishi’s just got a new Labrador puppy!

newnortherner111 · 02/07/2021 18:30

@Classica Angela Merkel made a salient comment about the size of the crowd at Wembley.

I don't read much into the Batley and Spen result in national terms. George Galloway is still the only politician nearly as bad as Boris Johnson.

the80sweregreat · 02/07/2021 18:34

An old friend of mine had an affair with a work colleague in the 80s. She said that nobody cottoned on apart from one person , but I think people do know and choose to ignore it.
It went on all the time in my old work place.
IF it's because it's another man in this case with Gove ( allegedly of course ) he'll probably get an easier time of it than Hancock.
Sunak's pup is so cute.
That flag photo is awful!
Boris will be wearing headbands next to be the same as some of the players ..

LadyEloise · 02/07/2021 18:57

ShockSarah Vine and Michael Gove.
I read her article. Sad

SueSaid · 02/07/2021 18:59

Oh well if it had been a tory seat 24 years ago 'easy pickings' indeed.

I wish Kim L very well, she seems brilliant. If someone like her ended up leader I may even vote for them. They need convincing, confident people running Labour and we all know they haven't got that at the moment.

How odd that we agree, i thought exactly the same thing tonight, she has talent and raw honesty.

PicsInRed · 02/07/2021 20:33

Oh dear oh dear, I knew there must be a reason Rishi got that puppy last week.

Next Matt Hancock will be arranging a big white wedding to a pregnant Gina, walked up the aisle by their 3 brand new rescue puppies.

Actually, screw it, just send word to the palace that another royal baby is required. Twins preferred.

Classica · 02/07/2021 20:36

I betcha Boris and his new bride will announce a pregnancy soon.

Peregrina · 02/07/2021 21:28

Oh well if it had been a tory seat 24 years ago 'easy pickings' indeed.

Most definitely, since a considerable number of the electorate will still remember those days. Unlike Hartlepool or Chesham and Amersham where no one under about 100 would be able to remember any other party holding the seat.

But then a week is a long time in politics, as the last one has shown, so 100 years is like a geological era.

But pleased too to see Kim win - undoubtedly the best candidate.
