Surely you would have cameras in a Government building and surely pointing it at doorways between different areas or departments isn't a bad idea.
It looks like a screenshot of a cctv security camera monitor.

@Peregrina

Barbara Castle should have been Labour's first female leader. After that?Hmm, can't really think of anyone. Harriet Harman possibly?
Harriet Harmon has focussed almost exclusively on women’s issues, if she’d spread her net wider, she could easily have been leader. The Labour party has missed out on a few good women - Betty Boothroyd would have been awesome, imagine her head to head with Thatcher!

Yvette Cooper’s the only one I realistically see as a leader now, she’s incisive, intelligent and very cool. A lot of the current crop lack gravitas.

Peregrina · 29/06/2021 21:18

We definitely need someone to take on Bozo's bluster. Starmer's forensic approach would work with a normal PM, but Bozo isn't normal.

Or we need a few nice by elections in Tory seats which they lose - but they won't be caught napping next time.

ginandbearit · 29/06/2021 21:32

Emily Thornberry would scare Boris to death ..she has the character and wit and energy to really pin him and the tories down ..Starmer is too forensic and dull , it shouldnt matter but it does..style over substance got us Boris..Rayner should be a star but somehow just doesnt deliver...yeah Nanny Thornberry would wipe the floor with that shower .

DysonSphere · 29/06/2021 21:34

When Ed Miliband was leader, Harriet Harman was told by a caller on LBC that he'd vote for her tomorrow if she became leader of the Labour Party.

She said quite emphatically that she never had or ever desired to be leader. I think because of the level of commitment. I assume she loves politics but appreciates her home life and doesn't like the dirty side of politics. I think it's good to know who you are.

Yvette Cooper has a certain grit that would serve her well in the role I think.

the80sweregreat · 29/06/2021 21:37

Emily Thornbury is too much of a snob and a champagne socialist to win hearts and minds.
The so called ' blue wall' towns just wouldn't like her.
Labour need someone who can talk to the people. Emily can't. I like her, but I don't think it would work.
They just need a female Boris type. I
Cant think of anyone who fits that brief though!

Roussette · 29/06/2021 21:38

Oh yes Emily Thornberry, she's great. I watched her wipe the floor with Liz Truss in PMQs the other day.

Weebleweeble · 29/06/2021 21:48

I'm sure Harriet Harman used to get slated on here.
I think it was just sexism - she had a really hard time.

Devilishpyjamas · 29/06/2021 21:50

Harriet Harman is an excellent chair of the Human Rights Committee. She is doing a great job there.

I do like Emily Thornbury but I recognise she is not going to be popular everywhere.

DateLoaf · 29/06/2021 22:12

On that list I’d definitely vote for Yvette Cooper. She’s head and shoulders their strongest asset.,
We really need to bring back the competent grown ups into party politics and government.

Can you identify any competent grown ups on the other side of the house?
ancientgran · 30/06/2021 07:37

@JaniieJones

'Annelida Dodds, Yvette Cooper, Rachel reeves, Lisa nandy. all impressive.'

Annaliese Dodds impressive?? Nandy's lisp doesn't do her any favours tbh.

I know Julia Hartley Brewer is a radio presenter not a politician and I'm not a fan in the slightest but that is the kind of personality needed in politics. Loud, confident and unwavering in their beliefs.

Referring to a speech impediment is really low. Really really low.
DateLoaf · 30/06/2021 07:43

No. The Tories that were moderate and experienced got shoved out over Brexit. That’s the problem with an irresponsible populist for PM.

BiscoffAddict · 30/06/2021 07:49

He’s planning his comeback already. Why am I not surprised? Give this a few months and it will be all forgotten

There are lots of competent individuals on the Tory side. Probably more the MPs rather than the government. But the MPs had to pledge loyalty to Boris and Brexit so as not to be sacked. They tow the government line but I bet many don’t like it. Boris’s government is not normal conservatism and they will get rid of him soon. But I just hope the next government at least has decent and fair MPs, not like this lot who lie constantly and line their own and their friend’s pockets.

Peregrina · 30/06/2021 07:58

But those competent Tory MPs could now rebel if they chose. Johnson could withdraw the whip from them but they would still be MPs. It's about time some did make a stand. Except of course, every time Johnson hears a whiff of the prospect of being defeated on a vote, he makes sure that the matter isn't voted on.

They must be doing a very good job of hiding. Certainly you cannot be refer to my MP or any of those in neighbouring constituencies.

“Jesus I can't believe someone has linked to that arsehole Jolyon Maugham's Twitter. Who tf cares what that kimono wearing fox clubbing twat has to say.”

So you prefer having a PM who consistently lies, who compromises himself by accepting donations for personal gain, whose lack of appropriate leadership and bad decision making has lead to the death of thousands, and the current debacle due to delta going wild, who has breached the ministerial code on many occasions and allows other ministers to do so, setting the tone for open corruption in UK government. But JM is as bad for killing one fox?

I don’t agree, so will post it again. If it is proved, Hancock and Patel should go to prison

It won’t be forgotten. We haven’t forgotten Cummings’ eye test, have we? Every time Hancock’s name comes up the media will resurrect this, let alone Twitter.

I don’t think it’s fair to judge any back benchers on their performance over the last 15 months. They’d have looked really treacherous to stand up to Johnson and his cabinet while they were dealing with disaster. A lot of them had only been MPs for three months when covid hit.

The complete lack of public support from them for Hancock was very telling. Jenrick was sent out to defend him and even that was pretty half hearted.

KarenofSparta · 30/06/2021 09:44

It definitely won't be forgotten judging by the memes and mirth being generated around my teen DCs generation - you know - the future voters?

For some of them it's the first time they've fully understood real political hypocrisy, esp given their particular COVID experience.

I've no doubts that this will remain in their minds.

Furloughed on 80% One of the most generous provisions by any country

Yes, I will remember that

Blossomtoes · 30/06/2021 13:29

You’re not a future voter, are you @Scaredycatmoo76?

Those future voters have had their education seriously adversely affected, their university fees squandered, their social lives decimated, their mental health damaged. Furlough means fuck all to them, it doesn’t affect them. A great big swathe of them will be first time voters in the next general election, it will be interesting to see their verdict.

Roussette · 30/06/2021 13:48

Scaredycat Do you think about anyone else but yourself?

Seriously.

We're doing OK too, because of our time in life etc but my god, I have such sympathy with what some people have gone through. We have just been lucky. Others have had no luck whatsoever and have suffered horrendously

They'll be paying for it plus all the fraud that has been allowed to go on, so they'll have little choice but to remember it.

Anyway, anyone furloughed isn't a future voter.
