Looks like we might need a new thread.

When it comes to Sunak, I don't know about setting anyone up.

Avoiding having the finger pointed for his own bad decisions however...

Like I say. The type who lets off a stinker but looks too innocent to get the blame. Silent but deadly.

This article is a few months old but still very relevant. It highlights Sunak's poor judgement.

Shadow chancellor Anneliese Dodds will accuse her Tory opposite number of repeatedly taking the wrong policy options, with the Government setting up a “false choice” between protecting public health and the economy.

Annelise Dodds was demoted by Keir Starmer last month and Rishi Sunak is leading the best economic recovery in Europe according to recent accounts -

UK recovery outstripping G7 and EU, says Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane...

He also praised Rishi Sunak’s response to Covid-19, saying: “The Chancellor has played a blinder..."

Good grief.

Praising our economic recovery, given Brexit, is bonkers.

Enough said

God his poor wife. It must be so hard being married to the Health Secretary during a pandemic. I bet he was never around, constantly stressed. And just when there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel, he turns out to have been shagging around at work. I hope she takes him to the cleaners.

June 18 (Reuters) - Rating agency Fitch raised Britain's outlook to 'stable' from 'negative' on Friday, saying macroeconomic, labour market and fiscal outturns since the start of 2021 showed the economy was more resilient to the impact of the pandemic shock.

I have to admit, I am a little bit surprised at Hancock. He seemed less likely to do this than most other cabinet ministers.

Tealightsandd · 26/06/2021 21:56

Our recovery outstripping G7?
Bloody good thing if true...given that we're coming from behind.

Thanks to Rishi's 'blinder', we've been hit harder than the rest of the G7.

The UK economy faces deeper economic scarring than other G7 economies

Roussette · 26/06/2021 22:02

Good try Clavinova
Not the reality

Tealightsandd · 26/06/2021 22:03

Separately, others will disagree, but I personally think there's little point in having a 'good' economy when the reality of that economy is a housing and homelessness emergency (165,000 homeless in London alone) - a crisis significantly worsened by Rishi Sunak's decision to lose the taxpayer billions of stamp duty, disabled people dying from poverty and neglect, and increasing numbers of families having to use foodbanks.

Good economy for who? Rishi Sunak maybe but the average Joe, perhaps not.

Roussette · 26/06/2021 22:05

@Tealightsandd

So right

Just spotted this - couldn't resist posting;

[Andrew] Neil wrote on Twitter: “Only a few months ago OECD was predicting UK would have slowest recovery of major economies.

“@ Now it says we’ll be one of fastest. But ‘scarred’.

“Molly the Dog makes more reliable forecasts.

The US is forecast to grow by 6.9% this year, up from the 6.5% forecast in March, while eurozone growth has been upgraded to 4.3%, from 3.9%.

Stamp duty receipts collected by the Treasury from housing transactions fell by more than £1 billion in the last quarter, prompting analysts to warn that the chancellor’s tax holiday is “turning out to be a mistake”.

Compared with the same quarter last year, duty received fell by just over £1 billion, or 43 per cent, to £1.35 billion. The decline was down to Rishi Sunak’s stamp duty holiday, introduced in July, and a year-on-year fall in the number of transactions.

18 June

Britain’s economic recovery will accelerate into the autumn despite the threat from staff shortages and higher inflation, according to a forecast by the business lobby group, the CBI.

The economy will expand by 8.2% this year and by 6.1% next year as the successful vaccination programme allows lockdown easing to continue next month, driving a surge in consumer spending and business activity in the second half of 2021, the CBI said.

The rate of growth will outpace all the UK’s major competitors, taking the economy back to pre-pandemic levels of activity by the end of the year.

@LucindaT73

Matt and Gina?

Historically, the wives stay with their husbands. As far back as I can remember, none left other than Robin Cook's wife and she went off and found a toy boy on holiday.

Norma stayed with John.
Prescott's wife stayed
Paddy's wife stayed
Jeremy Thorpe all those years back, his wife stayed.
Clinton's wife stayed

and so the list goes on....

Yes, Matt and Gina, although the list you gave of wives who continue to support their husbands after the scandal emerges is rather dismal. In this case there's public CCTV footage of her errant husbands' embraces and memes have been made and shared aplenty. It's terrible, cruel humiliation.

Surely no woman could stick a bandaid on that although as you say Hilary did.....although I would say that in the Lewinsky situation Hilary always had an eye on her own future political career and the choice to 'forgive' was most likely a lot about benefitting herself.

Perhaps a lot of political wives hang in there because of a feeling that they have often helped 'mould' or groom their husbands: supported their ambitions, taken a back seat, done the dutiful public appearances, moved the family into the right areas and the children into the right schools, dealt with most of the family humdrum stuff alone, stayed up listening to their problems and given advice.

To let another woman walk in and benefit from all that work must be galling.

A little light relief in the form of a Jane Godley special:

He must of known cameras were there after working at that office for so long so the real question is "why did he want to get caught out?"

DollyParton2 · 26/06/2021 23:08

You’ve all seen the latest headlines right? Apparently HE has left his wife.

Bananalanacake · 26/06/2021 23:08

Are we sure it's him on the video, could be a look alike paid to act like him.

He’s resigned and left his wife.. Are you suggesting it’s not him, but he’s just going along with it, and losing his job and marriage?
bitheby · 26/06/2021 23:12

He seems to me that he's relieved. He's left a poisoned chalice of a job and his wife. Remains to be seen if his mistress sticks with him.

Brute · 26/06/2021 23:14

Should be a film about this:-The goings and cummings of a minister.
Hancock has also spilt from his other half.

MrsKrystalStubbs · 26/06/2021 23:14

He has left his wife according to the papers. Presumably him and the OW are going to make a go of it. Fair enough. You can’t force someone to stay in a failing marriage. It’s not uncommon for people to revisit their uni loves later on. Let them live I say. Martha will be ok, she’s super posh and I’m sure some nice man will sweep her off her feet and everything will be fine. It’s rich people problems. Nothing like our real lives where we have to stay in unhappy marriages because we can’t afford to do otherwise.

Frazzled2207 · 26/06/2021 23:24

According to Twitter she knew nothing about it until Thursday evening when presumably he was made aware the story was about to break. And said he was leaving her for his mistress. Poor wife. And poor kids. A useless health sec does not mean he is not a good dad, but the situation now - all his own making- must be tortuous
