AIBU to ask if the Irish have to apply to stay in the UK post Brexit?

My in laws say that they have received a card through the post stating that the Irish have to apply to remain in the UK post Brexit. They are a bit vague on exactly who has sent this card.

They came from Southern Ireland to live in the UK in the early 1960s and have lived here ever since.

Looking online, it looks like the Irish don't have to apply for settled status?

Or, Donegal is just west of Northern Ireland It is indeed.
Never, ever ask a person in any part of Ireland
Awh sure it'll be grand anyways once you've a flask of tea ☺

Crocodilesoup · 24/06/2021 21:57

I go back home purely for the traybakes Grin

Crocodilesoup · 24/06/2021 22:05

Mind you I'm watching Smother at the moment and that's a beautiful part of the country it's filmed in (Co Clare I think)

Piglet89 · 24/06/2021 22:05

@Crocodilesoup I’m a Catholic and I made Rocky road the other night. But my friend says I’m not an honorary Protestant until I’ve made “Fifteens”?

Crocodilesoup · 24/06/2021 22:06

Fifteens are the gold standard, yes.

FaceyRomford · 24/06/2021 22:08

@Thunderface

There is Ireland and Northern Ireland. There is no country called Southern Ireland.
Actually there was for a few months in 1921/22. Then it became the Irish Free State. HTH.
5566rfghh · 24/06/2021 22:14

@Elverybaby
I did mention that in an earlier post how most would say they're going across to Donegal. Which is why down South to _ is fine when referring to most counties as it's actually south of NI.

People in Donegal do say they're going to "the North" when talking about NI even though it might not be technically correct, it's just a shorter way of saying NI and does not have historical connections that make it offensive.

5566rfghh · 24/06/2021 22:17
@5566rfghh not really. If you are going to Donegal, is it still the South?
Plus people mostly say down South, which even if they're going to Meath, whilst not in the South of Ireland, it's still correct as they're literally going 'down South'.

Sillawithans · 24/06/2021 22:19

I don't see where the op said southern Ireland was a country!
I'm lucky enough to live there

EmeraldShamrock · 24/06/2021 22:20

Just Googled fifteens yum.

5566rfghh · 24/06/2021 22:22

I've had fifteens only once before, they're yum, will pass on the honoury Protestant title though 🤣.

This thread has really been derailed 🙊😄, think OP did get her answer however 🤣.

@Sillawithans

I don't see where the op said southern Ireland was a country! I'm lucky enough to live there
Don't start all that up again, we've only just managed to steer the conversation onto confectionery!
5566rfghh · 24/06/2021 22:24

@Sillawithans

I don't see where the op said southern Ireland was a country! I'm lucky enough to live there
She said she used it so people wern't wondering whether it was NI. She did admit her mistake though!
Sillawithans · 24/06/2021 22:32

@MurielSpriggs ok mum Wink

Sillawithans · 24/06/2021 22:33

@5566rfghh that's exactly how I took her op. She didn't really make a mistake though.....but let's not go there.

EmeraldShamrock · 24/06/2021 22:36

that's exactly how I took her op. She didn't really make a mistake though.....but let's not go there. She did considering Ireland is not known as Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. The mistake was owned, clearly you disagree.

Sillawithans · 24/06/2021 22:39

@EmeraldShamrock lots of people refer to the ROI as Southern Ireland, it's really not the end of the world is it. If someone asked me if I was from Southern Ireland I'd say yes, wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

MurielSpriggs · 24/06/2021 22:45

@Sillawithans

If someone asked me if I was from Southern Ireland I'd say yes, wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Now I did warn you!

BrandNewHeretic · 24/06/2021 22:49

Are fifteens a Protestant thing??

EmeraldShamrock · 24/06/2021 22:50

lots of people refer to the ROI as Southern Ireland
Have you rtft?
It's really not the end of the world is it.
No not the end of the world however it is disrespectful to call a country by an incorrect names, especially one with such history attached.

Sillawithans · 24/06/2021 22:50

@MurielSpriggs I just can't keep my mouth shut Grin

Sillawithans · 24/06/2021 22:53

@EmeraldShamrock it's just not offensive to me. I literally give no shits about it to be honest. I lived in London for 20 years, must have been asked if I'm from Southern Ire hundreds of times, never gave it a second thought or lost any sleep over it. Don't let it keep you up at night either Wink

EmeraldShamrock · 24/06/2021 22:59

@Sillawithans Oh don't you worry yourself about my sleep disturbances, thank you for your concern hun.

Sillawithans · 24/06/2021 23:01

@EmeraldShamrock I wasn't Grin

EmeraldShamrock · 24/06/2021 23:03

EmeraldShamrock I wasn't grin
No shit, Sherlock. 👍
