NEW: The government is urging children to sing this song on June 25

twitter.com/PoliticsForAlI/status/1407385635762081809

"We are Britain and we have one dream.
Strong Britain great nation"

Am I wrong, or is this really cringey?

Very much puts me in mind of this

Why are other countries allowed to be proud of their country and culture and sing patriotic songs and British people are ridiculed and condemned for doing the same
Because a) we have very little to be proud of, if you have even the slightest grasp of history b) it's cringey as fuck, and I find all patriotic singing and flag waving by other countries (especially all that American flag worship) as cringey too.

One nation?
Which one nation?

Will you get your kids to sing this on June 25th?
coronafiona · 24/06/2021 07:31

No. They, and working mothers, have been sold out by this government. Singing won't make them or me feel better about it.

Frazzled2207 · 24/06/2021 07:33

I asked my kids teacher (primary) if they would be taking part. Luckily she said very diplomatically “not a chance”.

tigger1001 · 24/06/2021 07:47

@AChickenCalledDaal

How very apt and hilarious that they've picked a day when Scottish schools are on summer holiday. Says it all about "One Britain" and level of general knowledge at the DfE.
True, but I'm very grateful that they are!

My youngest leaves primary today and hasn't been allowed to do any singing for their leavers service. Would be furious if that rule was suddenly overlooked for this bollocks.

SuperstoreFan · 24/06/2021 07:49

Not a fucking cat's chance in hell.

Arbadacarba · 24/06/2021 07:53

JesusInTheCabbageVan Definitely think they should sing the N Korean anthem - I agree with you, it's worded much better Grin .

DGRossetti · 24/06/2021 07:53

As someone whose father grew up under Mussolini and heard enough stories about daily life under fascism, I'm disappointed I couldn't be tyhe first to say FOTTFSOF and then some more ...

HappydaysArehere · 24/06/2021 08:08

Blooming awful music as well.

What do you mean 'allowed'. Allowed by whom?
pointythings · 24/06/2021 09:41

WalkingOnTheCracks I thought the same thing - I'm from the Netherlands originally and I can't imagine the Dutch government ever encouraging this kind of flag-shagging patriotism. We aren't insecure enough to need it and we haven't forgotten the Nazis.

To be fair, it's all about the Oranje and the footie right now anyway - until we get knocked out, that is. Smile

I lived in Amsterdam for a couple of years, and I was always struck by how the Dutch manage to enjoy being Dutch without being arseholes about it.

You couldn't do the Netherlands' Queen's Day in the UK. It would just turn into a jingoistic wank.

The link says the song was written by primary school children, so I'm not mocking it but I don't like the concept. I'm not going to be proud to be British while we pretend our pride should be based on the Empire.

The song admittedly is not particularly amazing or uplifting but there is potential post Brexit and loooooong past colonial conquest and taking all the best bits back to our multicultural nation - to go with this concept to unite under a song and new rebranded global outward looking Britain and Northern Ireland. For business development and cultural exchanges we need to renew friendships with continental neighbours and be best mates trading freely globally with the main movers and shakers of this world including up and coming newer kids on the strategic trading block with potential eg numerous Pacific nations. We can start with a new uniting proud and better song which resonates with all home nations with the right mix of vibes to vibrate around the globe putting us back in play on the strategic map! Perhaps not past sell by date Rule (rude) Britannia but a new fit for purpose inclusive confident possibly a touch passive “nice” aggressive song for the new hopefully soon post pandemic era!
pointythings · 24/06/2021 11:27

A song isn't going to fix the damage done by this government. Hmm They're the ones who have created this hostile to foreigners insular little nation which cannot be trusted to keep to agreements it signs. Renewing damaged relationships isn't going to be fixed with an extra helping of jingoism.

Agreed and very true but we can’t be blamed for all the past and recent wrongdoings. Especially the historical stuff generations ago when we did know but did not care how we treated others globally as we sent our gun boats around the high seas looking to enrich ourselves and spread old British “values” as we now understand regrettably was perhaps not the best thing to have done but just put it down to how empires works and forever existed once humans started to play with and invented better more efficient killing technology.

This can be the fresh start as we spread vaccines (not Covid) globally as a peace offering for a new world of equals with naturally some more equal than others. Preferably we stay in a position of strength to help others not doing as well and help when needed and possible taking into account our own needs as the NHS and schools etc starts to be challenged again in terms of resourcing.

We had a vote in the recent elections but in England at least we were presented with no credible alternatives to choose as a pick of all bad “options” and so went with the vaccination but incompetent status quo party who apparently got Brexit done? Perhaps saving overseas lives and livelihoods with vaccines may help too along with a nicely repackaged song to go with it - sent with love from the New Great Britain and Northern Ireland etc. And let’s agree a new mutually beneficial lovely free trade deal as we have other good stuff and love to offer!

OliviaWainright · 24/06/2021 11:47

Why Britain? Why not United Kingdom? Or England?

This makes my flesh crawl.

newnortherner111 · 24/06/2021 11:51

If any of you discover that this inaccurate song is sung tomorrow by your children, please complain to the head teacher and the governors.

Hopefully your school will see sense.

PiccalilliChilli · 24/06/2021 12:55

We don't do jingoism as a nation really. I think quietly we know the "good bits" about living here (Bakewell tart being one) but overall we don't want to look like we are showing off and prefer to keep things, well, muted.

NatARG · 24/06/2021 13:01

No. Dangerous nationalism from a bigoted and xenophobic government. Very worrying and I couldn't believe this when I found out yesterday. Very reminiscent of Hitler Youth

eddiemairswife · 24/06/2021 13:56

It's not even a catchy tune.

theressomethingaboutmarie · 24/06/2021 14:36

I emailed my son's school saying that I did not permit my son to participate in this if, indeed, they were planning on going ahead with it. We're bringing up our kids in a home environment that is in direct contrast to the British values being displayed by the current government.

This is an intriguing viewpoint. Could you perhaps elaborate on your alternative home British environment? We may be missing out on your ideas and practices as it is good to share opinions and debate a more mutually acceptable and preferable way forward. As per my earlier up thread comments - I am minded to support the thrust of this initiative ie an uniting national song BUT believe this proposition falls well well short of expectations as a fresh blank canvas approach would be better suited for the purposes as I hinted to previously in this thread. I believe this “project” has potential if done right and brings people together to put our Brexit British values, culture and ideals on the global map.
newnortherner111 · 24/06/2021 16:07

@theressomethingaboutmarie I would argue that this government do not display British values.

They have no respect for the Queen.
The Prime Minister himself has no respect for family values.
They sold Northern Ireland down the river and created a border down the Irish Sea.

to name but three.
