NEW: The government is urging children to sing this song on June 25

twitter.com/PoliticsForAlI/status/1407385635762081809

"We are Britain and we have one dream.
Strong Britain great nation"

Am I wrong, or is this really cringey?

Because some of us don't see North Korea as a role model

Bull's eye

Rule Britannia, Hearts of Oak, Men of Harlech. Scotland the Brave, Danny Boy, David the Bard etc. All traditional songs from the National Song Book which we used at school in the 1950s. We don't need any more.
And Jerusalem, Cwm Rhondda, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, Flower of Scotland...Britain already has plenty of beautiful songs. With better lyrics.

@Ericaequites

Americans know how to scan verses. It’s a horrid bit of woke propaganda.
Woke? Are you serious?
saraclara · 23/06/2021 14:33

@NameyNameyNameChangey

YANBU. How very Soviet Russia / NK of them.
That was my instant reaction to the lines in the OP.

It's pretty much the opposite of woke
QwertyGirly · 23/06/2021 14:37

I have many problems with the song, with the timing, with the lyrics (the very few lyrics).

First of all, don't use children for propaganda that you know will backfire. Those poor kids who are probably proud to have written this will be devastated that it has such bad press.

Secondly, Great Britain doesn't include Northern Ireland. How fucking dim is that. Thirdly, schools in Scotland are shut. Double dim.

There are three nations in Great Britain. Scotland, Wales and England. They have mixed up the term 'nation' with trying to be inclusive of all immigrants. Which is so so disingenuous. We are not going to improve race relations with a jingoistic sing song in school for christ's sake.

Finally, so many people are stating that they don't like 'gestures'. Boris Johnson is at the front of this. Priti Patel. Gavin Williamson. Then they come up with this crap.

Therefore we possibly need a unifying single song combining all the above into one. Preferably a song which has the uplifting and proud resonance as say the La Marseillaise French National Anthem? Putting the Great back into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Although not so sure about the royal kingdom bit so perhaps United Great Britain and Northern Ireland unless of course separatists become formerly British.

newnortherner111 · 23/06/2021 15:49

Great Britain is three nations, the United Kingdom is four. Asking any child to sing the song is asking them to lie.

Shared values include kindness and respect. Values which our Prime Minister does not have, starting in his private life.

newnortherner111 · 23/06/2021 15:50

Incidentally Great Britain does not include Northern Ireland. I wonder how the Ulster Unionists feel about being excluded?

OBON's website is a flag shagger's wankfest. Wall to wall red, white and blue!

Burnt0utMum · 23/06/2021 16:14

25th is Junemas so we might be singing some cheesy Xmas songs for fun but no way anything that the government suggests

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 23/06/2021 16:30

Just had a quick curiosity glance at the OBON's website and stopped at first mention of British Indian. Reason being British is British and not necessary to mix or combine with other non British nations unless home nations. If one of proudly British it should be pure Brit irrespective of original heritage be it royal Germanic or any other eg colonial ethnicity. We are a multicultural country with a rich and colourful immigration and migration past making us unique but British.

eddiemairswife · 23/06/2021 16:40

Anything Gavin Williamson approves of gets a NO from me.

OBON day, and this song, have been around for several years but it was far more local. It's only achieved national press this time because the DfE decided to tweet about it.

The song was written by children, in it's entirety. The school those children attended has now been viciously attacked on social media because their children wrote this song a few years ago.

mustlovegin · 23/06/2021 17:08

The usual suspects swarming into this thread to bash and ridicule a song with perfectly respectable and inoffensive words should calm down TBH

Flumpaphone · 23/06/2021 17:14

lazylump72 · 23/06/2021 18:45

It is all just pointless utter bollocks,,Kim Jon williamson has backed another winner...stop trying to force issues and leave the kids be, Its a NO from me. I want no part of it and I do not want my child coerced into this,,its a slippery path

TangledTrees · 23/06/2021 18:49

Wtaf?
I have a strong feeling that this won’t catch on Grin

TheWernethWife · 23/06/2021 19:04

Oh dear. Our family's already on the list for not doing the weekly clap

Same here, one of my neighbours had a go at me for not clapping last year. I told her that the local hospital couldn't hear it and she should think about my daughter working in a care home without PPE instead.

lazylump72 · 23/06/2021 19:12

Just read a tweet on this had to share it,,it went along the lines of how many kids will be off sick on that day? made me giggle!

newnortherner111 · 23/06/2021 19:17

@mustlovegin it is inaccurate, never mind whether it's a good tune or whoever wrote it. Great Britain is three nations.

Asking a child to sing it (never mind whether singing could spread Covid) is akin to asking them to sing that two times two is five.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 23/06/2021 19:23

It's sort of not very british to go in for this sort of crap, is it?

We're a nation of tea & biscuits, excessive pride in underwhelming sports performances, something of a love of the underdog. We think its bang out to go about boasting.

MilduraS · 23/06/2021 20:08

@OhYouBadBadKitten

Nationalism (and worse) does not have to be born in white middle class areas.

It may have been started with good intentions. But this is not a nation that welcomes all, this is a country that has asylum seekers drowning to reach us. It is a nation that literally went back on its promise that EU citizens living here would keep their rights automatically. It is a nation that promises a hostile environment. It is a divided nation. Children can sing well intentioned loving songs, but they are lead by a government with no heart and no soul who are embracing this day with full on hypocrisy.

And what about Northern Ireland FFS.

This sums it up well.

Making children sing songs like this makes me feel uneasy. It's like we're trying to brainwash them to disregard the faults and take pride in what we already have. I love the idea of teaching unity and tolerance but to achieve those things, the country needs to change.

LemonRoses · 23/06/2021 20:16

They block anyone who is critical of them on Twitter. Nasty jingoistic try hard who fancies an MBE. Far, far too Nationalistic indoctrination for my taste. Sinister.

BonnieDundee · 23/06/2021 20:19

More sinister than cringey Sad
