NEW: The government is urging children to sing this song on June 25

twitter.com/PoliticsForAlI/status/1407385635762081809

"We are Britain and we have one dream.
Strong Britain great nation"

Am I wrong, or is this really cringey?

I think it's cringey. And I'm in no way proud to be British at the moment, we're a fucking joke.

If my boys want to sing it they can, they're old enough to decide. I won't be encouraging them

cardibach · 22/06/2021 19:56

This one U.K. thing is a current obsession, with ministers being told not to refer to the separate countries as countries. A Welsh news article said they wanted the Union flag flown above the Welsh flag while it’s sung. It’s as if they want the Welsh Independence movement to get more support (which is fine by me, actually). Complete lack of understanding about how the constituent parts of the U.K. work and relate to each other.

Am I living in North Korea ?

GlacindaTheTroll · 22/06/2021 19:57

Seems to be some kind of affiliation at least as they're promoting them

Yeah, it seems to be just promotion. There's nothing on the website to suggest affiliation.

HunkyPunk · 22/06/2021 19:57

Oh dear. Our family's already on the list for not doing the weekly clap Grin

User135644 · 22/06/2021 19:57

Will there be a helpline to grass up people who don't sing loudly enough?

The new clap for the NHS. You must get your kids out on the front door to sing this to show their patriotism or get local facebook grouped.

"Poor show at No32 this week, completely off-key. Buck up for next week or you'll be relocated like No27 were".

ButYouJustPointedToAIIOfMe · 22/06/2021 19:58

Bloody hope my kids' primary aren't doing this.
Also hope I am not expected to sing this where I work.

Bitofachinwag · 22/06/2021 19:59

It's One Britain One Nation Day according to that Twitter link.

SpamIAm · 22/06/2021 20:00

Oh are we allowed to sing again now then??

AChickenCalledDaal · 22/06/2021 20:01

How very apt and hilarious that they've picked a day when Scottish schools are on summer holiday. Says it all about "One Britain" and level of general knowledge at the DfE.

AChickenCalledDaal · 22/06/2021 20:02

Do you reckon I'll be allowed to sing with my choir that day, too?

BlatantlyNameChanged · 22/06/2021 20:03

Played the song for my DC, they all rolled about laughing and said their schools aren't doing "THAT" followed by much mocking of the song. Little fuckers are going to get the whole family sent for re-education.

CandleWick4 · 22/06/2021 20:03

@ivykaty44

Strong echos of Hitler youth
Literally about to type this!!
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/06/2021 20:03

🤣🤣
Ja Vohl HitlerJugend!

not a fucking chance.

GrandmasNightgown · 22/06/2021 20:04

OBON seems to have been around since 2013, and has had an annual event on event on the last Friday of June.

This is the first I'd heard of it - seems to have been mainly in and around Bradford in its early years

It's not a DfE event.

It's an OBON event that they happen to have tweeted about.

Why are other countries allowed to be proud of their country and culture and sing patriotic songs and British people are ridiculed and condemned for doing the same
Not quite the same as 'I am Australian' is it?
Babynames2 · 22/06/2021 20:06

I’m so glad I don’t work Fridays so won’t be at work on the 25th. The secondary age kids I teach will be in outraged if they get asked to sing this. There’s no chance in hell they will be getting kids in upper primary on to do this.

PianoAndGuitar · 22/06/2021 20:06

Suddenly some of those conspiracy theories aren’t looking quite so mad.... 👀

ChaToilLeam · 22/06/2021 20:09

Dear god, that is laughable, wouldn’t even make A Song For Europe.

JaneJeffer · 22/06/2021 20:25

Jesus by the time I'm able to travel to GB there will probably be huge pictures of Boris displayed everywhere.

NameyNameyNameChangey · 22/06/2021 20:29

YANBU.
How very Soviet Russia / NK of them.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/06/2021 20:33

It's horrific.
