NEW: The government is urging children to sing this song on June 25

twitter.com/PoliticsForAlI/status/1407385635762081809

"We are Britain and we have one dream.
Strong Britain great nation"

Am I wrong, or is this really cringey?

Brunandcroissant · 23/06/2021 10:31

It's a song to basically say "Fuck the other countries/ Europe, don't show them any respect or people in 'our country' who identify as such". (And "Hooray for Tory corruption! The people are so stupid! As always!"). Nothing innocently patriotic about it.

AChickenCalledDaal · 23/06/2021 11:32

Young children love running around shouting "Poo! Bum! Willy! Boobies!", but it doesn't mean we should make it An Official Thing for everybody else to join in.

I dunno. I reckon a bit of co-ordinated running-about-shouting-rude-words might be the best possible way to bond people way right now Grin!!

Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Surely the most British of British values is that we don't do stuff like this, but stand around with our hands in our pockets locking mildly embarrassed?

It is of course possible to be right-wing and have brown skin.

everybodysang · 23/06/2021 11:45

[quote ofwarren]The song was written by Primary school children in Bradford
Why are you criticising a child's song?

because it's shit? School project - great. Well done. Asking anyone else to sing it? Absolutely fucking not.

It's akin to all those awful mummy poems that suddenly sprang up at the start of lockdown about 'the day the world stood still'. They were shit too but at least we weren't being asked to recite them en masse.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 23/06/2021 11:45

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia

The song is not particularly well written musicality. But anything that unites and bring people together is better than anything that divides. We have enough diversity already so although the song is not that great the concept is to put the great back into Great Britain! Could do and deserve better though!
It has certainly united people in embarrassment and incredulity, so... job done!
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 23/06/2021 11:47

Sorry @ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba, great minds Grin

Tuberoses · 23/06/2021 11:48

Nonsense. Apart from the fact that it’s a shit song - everyone knows that June 25th 2021 is Junemas. The only acceptable song is “We Wish You a Merry Junemas”!

Why are other countries allowed to be proud of their country and culture and sing patriotic songs and British people are ridiculed and condemned for doing the same
Because this one is awful.
Rhythmisadancer · 23/06/2021 11:55

Are they out of their fucking tree?

Itawapuddytat · 23/06/2021 11:58

Absolutely NO. We are in Scotland, btw.

NarcissaMalfoysManicure · 23/06/2021 12:02

Does the stilted, strange wording remind anyone else of the national anthem in Borat?! "Kazhakstan is greatest country in the world..."

This is Time Trumpet-esque hilarity.

Here's one for you then Grin
SecretSpAD · 23/06/2021 12:23

Mine are saying that if they are going to be forced to sing anything it'll be Sex Pistols "God save the Queen". Bless their innocent teenage hearts Grin

Ponoka7 · 23/06/2021 12:35

Who has one dream? Our government didn't when fucking over NI during the Brexit negotiations. The elite who wanted Brexit are now wanting to policies which are totally opposite to what persuaded some people to vote the way they did.
The Country doesn't, or we wouldn't have the benefit reforms we did and the government we do.

I hope if this is forced across schools, walk outs occur and parents of younger children protest.

DumplingsAndStew · 23/06/2021 12:35

@megletthesecond

No. Its a load of rubbish. Some mate of Esther McVey and her husband.

I'll play Rage against the machine instead.

That's a great idea. What time is this on? I think we should organise a mass Killing In The Name play at the same time.

Or System of a Down MUST have something equally anti politics that would work Grin

DumplingsAndStew · 23/06/2021 12:36

@Itawapuddytat

Absolutely NO. We are in Scotland, btw.
Don't be daft, they meant the other Britain. The English one.
pointythings · 23/06/2021 12:42

Of course it isn't a coincidence at all that we're supposed to be doing this patriotic singing on the 5th anniversary of the outcome of the referendum that fucked the whole country over.

Invisimamma · 23/06/2021 12:46

Not a fucking chance. We're also in Scotland and our schools are out for summer holidays by then already 😂.

Tossblanket · 23/06/2021 12:48

Hahaha bunch of bullshit 😂

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 23/06/2021 12:55

Sorry *@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba*, great minds Grin
@JesusInTheCabbageVan

🤣

FlorrieLindley · 23/06/2021 13:00

It's not very well thought out if the purpose is to forge a sense of belonging and identity. Calling it 'Britain' excludes Northern Ireland, and on that date the Scottish schools will be on holiday.
So it's really just for England and Wales. So, not the UK, and not Britain.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 23/06/2021 13:25

Sounds like something Hitler would command the schools to implement.

Terryscombover · 23/06/2021 14:12

Clearly the origins are genuine and do come from a desire for a united country. The issue with U.K./GB/actual nations I can get past as a kid/kids wrote it.

The current DoE promoting it however, with no background at all, immediately made it sinister and got a "Fuck no!" from me once I established it wasn't a piss take.

Says a lot for our Government. Also bear in mind we can comment like this against that bunch of cockwombles and not get arrested (for now at least).

PhilSwagielka · 23/06/2021 14:23

I'm Jewish, and stuff like this scares the hell out of me. I know I'm going to get flamed but I have a very good reason for being leery about hardcore patriotism. I mean, hardcore patriots don't consider us to be real Brits for a start.

I'm glad I don't have children. I'd be scared for them.

PhilSwagielka · 23/06/2021 14:24

@user1471505494

Why are other countries allowed to be proud of their country and culture and sing patriotic songs and British people are ridiculed and condemned for doing the same
Because some of us don't see North Korea as a role model.
