NEW: The government is urging children to sing this song on June 25

twitter.com/PoliticsForAlI/status/1407385635762081809

"We are Britain and we have one dream.
Strong Britain great nation"

Am I wrong, or is this really cringey?

What is the significance of 25th June? Asking for a friend.

www.beautifulbritain.co.uk/htm/onthisday/June/u225.htm

Having googled as per the above link, are we commemorating the arrival of the Black Death, the birth of George Orwell or when Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith was bitterly attacked in the Commons for the 'torture' of force-feeding suffragettes in prison?

TokyoSushi · 22/06/2021 21:35

Absolutely horrific, very North Korea/Hitler Youth, my DC will absolutely not be singing it!!

Longdistance · 22/06/2021 21:40

That’s the sort of shit my mother used to have to sing when she was a child in her communist country.
No thank you!

It's been in the last Friday in June since 2013.

Not always on 25th

It's a growing grassroots event that got a shout out from the DfE, not a one imposed from the centre. And do check out its supporters page before assuming either white or right wing.

adreamofspring · 22/06/2021 21:43

It’s chilling really. Agree with the hitler youth comments; Reminds me of this scene from cabaret

I thought this was a complete piss take when I first heard of it.
Such a badly thought out, hideous idea, and yeah, being promoted by the gvt shows horrible judgement.

Sick of all this one Reich fascism that is everywhere these days

Figgygal · 22/06/2021 21:46

What the absolute fuck?

ilovesooty · 22/06/2021 21:46

@Babynames2

I’m so glad I don’t work Fridays so won’t be at work on the 25th. The secondary age kids I teach will be in outraged if they get asked to sing this. There’s no chance in hell they will be getting kids in upper primary on to do this.
I'm glad I don't teach anymore. I'd want to tell them to fuck off if they expected me to promote this.
nancy75 · 22/06/2021 21:46

I’m glad my Dd (year 11) has finished school for the year already - I can just imagine her reaction if school tried to get them to sing that 😂
I think I’d be getting a call from the school

StoneofDestiny · 22/06/2021 21:50

The song was written by Primary school children in Bradford
Why are you criticising a child's song?

Will certainly criticise forced singing on a named date of a North Korean type 'anthem'. The fact a kid wrote it is neither here nor there (though it does read like a child's effort anyway)

P999 · 22/06/2021 21:50

Is June 25th BJ's birthday?

toocold54 · 22/06/2021 21:52

Why are other countries allowed to be proud of their country and culture and sing patriotic songs and British people are ridiculed and condemned for doing the same

I have noticed that British people seem to be less patriotic than any other country.
Maybe we just don’t shout about it as loud as other countries though I’m not sure.

Although I’ll be surprised if they allow singing in schools as you aren’t allowed to sing with 15 people at a funeral.

WannabeNun · 22/06/2021 21:54

Bollocks will they. My 9yo hasn't heard of it so no such nonsense in her school and it's not been mentioned at work either.

kowari · 22/06/2021 21:56

@GrandmasNightgown

Which is what, exactly?

www.onebritainonenation.com

I linked earlier in the thread - it might be interesting to look at it's backers (predominantly Asian and/or Muslim) and then read back some of the comments on this thread.

I looked at the website and it talks about Britain/Great Britain. Why not the UK? Why exclude Northern Ireland? Then they call the landmass of Great Britain one nation?

Things that work well in an English school assembly to promote inclusivity, do not tend to translate well into national policy.
I'm sure the original intention was good, I'm sure they didn't intend the Tory's to requisition it.

The Department for Education@educationgovuk
We're encouraging schools across the UK to celebrate One Britain One Nation Day on 25 June, when children can learn about our shared values of tolerance, kindness, pride and respect.

ilovesooty · 22/06/2021 22:00

Johnson's birthday is 19th June.

Well that stuff about shared values is taking the piss.

Johnson's birthday is 19th June.
Excellent, OBON day could be moved to the second to last Friday in June and become the mighty leaders official birthday celebration. We could wash our hands whilst singing it.
DumplingsAndStew · 22/06/2021 22:11

Arse off.

We'll be on summer holidays. You know, in the UK?

Postdatedpandemic · 22/06/2021 22:14

We know @DumplingsAndStew, it is just the Department for Education that don't.

eddiemairswife · 22/06/2021 22:17

Rule Britannia, Hearts of Oak, Men of Harlech. Scotland the Brave, Danny Boy, David the Bard etc. All traditional songs from the National Song Book which we used at school in the 1950s. We don't need any more.

Rosebel · 22/06/2021 22:19

My kids would either wet themselves laughing or give me a look of horror if I tried to get them singing that!

SunscreenCentral · 22/06/2021 22:20

June 25th. Another wonderful day in the sunlit uplands

Butteredtoast55 · 22/06/2021 22:27

As a Headteacher I have heard nothing about this and we won't be doing it either. I hope the government has checked its own guidance on singing in schools before they urge the children to give it some stick in confined spaces Grin

Saisong · 22/06/2021 22:29

Hang on - is singing even allowed??
