Grey hair - with pics

OK so I'm looking some advice.

Attached is a pic of my hair 3 weeks post root colouring at the hairdressers which cost £60. Obviously I would love to be able to manage the upkeep of this by having a full time stylist and disposable income at my finger tips, but I don't Sad

I am a young (ish) looking 38 Yr old. I sometimes get ID for over 25 places etc. Most people are surprised that I'm 38 and most would put me at 28 ish without this being a braggy one!

WIBU to bit the bullet to go grey. I'm not talking about just leaving it to go naturally and looking two tone for god knows how long. I'm talking about bleaching it up and dying it a funky grey with the intent to then let it do what it wants?

Am I being silly to even consider this? I'm not sure I could pull off a funky grey...

Has anyone ever done this and pulled it off successfully? I follow some 'Greys' on Instagram but they are properly glam, whereas I am less so Grin

YABU - keep with the brown & 3wk upkeep
YANBU - bleach it up then go silver grey

Thanks

I personally don't get offended if someone says grey hair ages women or look generally uncool. My own mother is horrified at my grey hair and my ex-husband hates it too.
Each to their own.

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 24/06/2021 17:05

@PussGirl

I'm 56 - I grew out my dye aged 49-50 & would never dye the grey again. I also had a new shortish funkyish cut around the same time that has been updated & changed a little every few months.

I've had more compliments since having this funky grey hairstyle from men & women of all ages, including total strangers

  • who'd've known so many people were (a) blind and (b) deluded...

Hmm Grin

Is it possible to post a pic?

I think it's very unfair to thing Rangoon's posts are in any way comparable to Bear's. Bear is repeatedly being rude to named posters, Rangoon has offered a different viewpoint to most people but in an abstract way. It's perfectly OK to do that, we allow debate on this site.

However fashionable it is, grey hair is aging and I would avoid it at your age unless you want to look 10 years older.

True.

I don't dye the greys in my hair and I am 54; I do not look 64.

People don't like to hear grey hair is ageing though, and are in a bizarre state of denial about it.

Weird. confused

I don't think I look older than my age, and have had people say that they thought I was younger than in my fifties; although I do not think I look 35 or anything ridiculous like that. Possibly I could look even younger if I had continued to have fake coloured hair, but it's not worth the time, money and effort to me.

And no WAY will someone look younger with grey hair. Anyone who thinks that is deluded.

If someone is in good shape, dresses well, has well looked after hair and their face is in good nick for their age, then it's totally possible that they could look younger than people expect someone of their age to look.

@TheVampiresWife

Some absolute beauts on this thread! I'd love to go grey (my hair is currently dyed black, has been for years, but I'm pure white underneath). DH ain't having it though. When I've not dyed it for a few weeks and expressed a fancy to grow it all out his comments have been less than complimentary, let's say. He's going grey and bald but that's fine apparently!

OP, I'd just grow it out rather than the whole bleach/tone thing. The upkeep will be a nightmare and it'll take a toll on the condition. Use root cover spray/powder to get over the first few months then brazen it out. It'll look gorgeous!

Why does it matter what men think? Genuine question.

Make your mind up!

You've just said you won't go grey, because your husband wouldn't like it. Confused

MrsBobDylan · 25/06/2021 20:11

I've gone half and half - undercut deals with the most grey bits and top knot and crazy fringe on top with some self-done blonde bits.

I am happy with my hair and have enjoyed having a less boring hair style than I had in my 20s and 30s. I am quite a confident person and feel as though I am capable of working out what my hair should look like.

What motivates me is that when men age, society tells them they are distinguished. When women get grey hair, we are told it ages us. Well so fucking what? I am 47 and not ashamed of that.

Don't spend 60 pounds every few weeks. Use Clairol permanent root touch up. It's brilliant, takes 15 minutes and lasts just as long as having it done at a salon. Seriously.

tentimesaday · 25/06/2021 20:37

Meant to say, one of the good things about touching up roots yourself is that you can let some grey come through so it looks more natural and not just a big block of brown. Would make it easier if you want to gradually grow into grey one day....

MaMelon · 25/06/2021 20:57

That’s what I use @tentimesaday - it’s brilliant stuff for what, six quid?

Less! Grin And I actually think it looks better than professionally colored roots. Can't understand people (most of my friends) paying to have roots dyed every few weeks.
MaMelon · 25/06/2021 21:56

I agree! DD did mine last night, took about 15 minutes for her to apply it, 10 minutes on my head, shampoo off - done. I get my hair dyed every 3-4 months and use this in between, saves me a fortune and hours in the salon. My hairdresser has agreed that it looks very good!

I see this thread has turned into an advert Grin

Loving the going grey inspiration!

I will go grey when my eyebrows go grey.

When does that happen though...? Confused

I’ve got white hair and dark brown brows. It doesn’t look as weird as you might think
woodhill · 26/06/2021 11:34

Yes I've used the Clairol, I did tend to use Demi perm dyes in the end as the regrowth was less harsh but still in my ends

PuppyMonkey · 26/06/2021 11:51

If you go grey, I believe the tip is to try and keep your eyebrows their original colour - not try to grow your eyebrows out grey too.

So if you have naturally dark brown eyebrows, keep them naturally dark brown as your grey comes through. Use an eyebrow pencil or whatever.

Cocolapew · 26/06/2021 12:21

If I had white eyebrows I'd look like Bod.

Blossomtoes · 26/06/2021 12:51

I have no discernible eyebrows because I stupidly over plucked them in my early 20s and they never grew back. Mine are a complete work of fiction and they’re considerably darker than my hair. I’d look like a ghost with silver eyebrows. A good eyebrow pencil is worth its weight in gold.

shivawn · 26/06/2021 18:01

My roots are similar to yours OP, I wouldn't do it tbh. I dye my roots chocolate brown every 5 weeks or so, less than a 10 minute job just to do the roots and then rinse it off after 20 minutes. If you're comfortable with it then go for it though.

I always wonder why eyebrows disappear forever when plucked a lot, but chin hairs never do 😳

I know. Mother Nature’s a bitch sometimes.

Hi i am a hairdresser and want to warn you that going a funky grey colour is one of the hardest colours to achieve unless you are already grey, it will be hugely expensive to achieve and will require way more maintenance than a normal colour service (the grey toner wash’s out very fast even with professional shampoos at home) never mind what it will do to the condition of your hair, have you through about going to a training college for your roots? It’s very cheap meaning you could do much more often with out costing too much? Personally I would not recommend going the bleach and grey look unless you have lots of time and money to keep it up x
