Grey hair - with pics

OK so I'm looking some advice.

Attached is a pic of my hair 3 weeks post root colouring at the hairdressers which cost £60. Obviously I would love to be able to manage the upkeep of this by having a full time stylist and disposable income at my finger tips, but I don't Sad

I am a young (ish) looking 38 Yr old. I sometimes get ID for over 25 places etc. Most people are surprised that I'm 38 and most would put me at 28 ish without this being a braggy one!

WIBU to bit the bullet to go grey. I'm not talking about just leaving it to go naturally and looking two tone for god knows how long. I'm talking about bleaching it up and dying it a funky grey with the intent to then let it do what it wants?

Am I being silly to even consider this? I'm not sure I could pull off a funky grey...

Has anyone ever done this and pulled it off successfully? I follow some 'Greys' on Instagram but they are properly glam, whereas I am less so Grin

YABU - keep with the brown & 3wk upkeep
YANBU - bleach it up then go silver grey

Thanks

But really, the whole 'looking older/younger' thing is irrelevant to many women (and so it should be).

However, the OP stated that despite being 38, most people think she's around 28, which is why people are pointing out she might want to consider how important (or not as the case may be) that is to her.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 23/06/2021 16:19

@WorraLiberty

You stated everyone with grey hair looks older. If people can have grey hair in their 30s by you own admission then people in their 40s or 50s could easily look a decade or more younger than they are.

I haven't stated that at all if you go back and read my post. I stated that it never makes anyone look younger, which is not the same thing at all.

My mum really does look younger (late 60s) now she's let her hair go naturally grey rather than continuing to dye it. She genuinely does. Younger, fresher, healthier appearance wise. I'm not saying that's the case for most, but it certainly is for some people even if not that many. Saying it's not ever possible seems a bit mental!

YANBU. I’m also considering this at 34. Sick of the upkeep, all my greys show through after a couple of weeks no matter what colour/highlights/bleaching.

Nope, ain’t never happening here - with my whiter than white skin tone and my dark eyes I’d look like Casper on a sick day. Thank god for blond hair dye and highlights to warm everything up a bit.

Otoh, women with the right colouring look amazing with grey hair. A woman I know through work has a light olive sin, blue eyes and an asymmetric grey bob, and she looks fab.

Why not go for it and see what it looks like?

WorraLiberty · 23/06/2021 16:27

@youvegottenminuteslynn fair enough, I guess it's all down to personal opinion at the end of the day and that can vary wildly.

I suppose when we think of the 'How old do I look?' threads and the massively varying opinions on there, it kind of proves it.

But in my personal opinion, I've never seen anyone female or male for whom naturally grey hair has taken years off them.

It doesn't always add years on, but it certainly doesn't subtract any in my view.

PuppyMonkey · 23/06/2021 16:34

Ooh I love a grey hair thread. I’m almost a year into growing a dark brown bob out. I quite like the way it’s come through from underneath as natural silver highlights, so I’d say don’t bother with bleaching and dyeing it OP. Go cold turkey.Grin

I’m 54 and hey ho, if I look 60 odd who cares, I’ll get over it.

Im very pale with dark eyes and eyebrows and my skin looks so much better with the lighter hair, my hair is white around my face and it gives it a glow.
Like a halo 😇

79andnotout · 23/06/2021 16:47

I'm 41 and growing my hair out, it's been about a year now. It's taking ages as I have wavy hair, and also I'd been dying my hair dark brown whereas naturally it's a light mousey colour. The greys actually look pretty cool, I have some white blond streaks that lift the mousy colour. Overall it looks horrific as I've gone full cold turkey so half of it is still dark brown, but as I only see people when walking the dog and doing zoom calls, it's fine. We'll soon be back into beanie season anyway.

One of the great benefits of growing my hair out is just how much it bothers my mother. I think having a grey daughter is really making her feel old! I do not fancy the cowpat on a head look, though, which is where I was heading.

Fair enough, but my point still stands, you said it NEVER makes anyone look younger and I have illustrated how it can
AnnieSnap · 23/06/2021 17:02

I’m a lot older than you (62 next month 😮😬), but in case it helps. This is my grey (white hair). Sadly, my styling of it is not up to my hairdressers standard 😟

Looking very good there @AnnieSnap - love it! Smile

AnnieSnap · 23/06/2021 19:11

Oh, that’s very nice of you @MaMelon. Hopefully, not too bad for my age 😊

MaMelon · 23/06/2021 19:17

Definitely not Smile I know we’re not supposed to talk about age on MN but you definitely look younger than 62 - I had you at early to mid fifties before I saw your age.

woodhill · 23/06/2021 19:18

I have mixed feelings about my grey, some days I hate it but I've got used to it.

I had been dying for a long time and the up keep was a pain. I think my hair is thicker and healthier

I worried about having dyed thinning hair as I got older which isn't a great look

It is liberating

woodhill · 23/06/2021 19:24

@Greyhairdontcare1982

I think flat lifeless box dyed hair can be equally as ageing. Let’s face it, most of us with the kind of grey/white hair we’re talking about have no more than 2-3 weeks post dye before the roots are really visible, while a good hairdresser multi tonal dye job might look the business, not many people can afford the upkeep of getting that redone every 3 weeks.

And aye my hair might be ageing but the freedom of not worrying about roots for a big event or whatever is priceless.

Yes, and that is stressful and time consuming. The dye didn't colour my side bits well and I was worried about water touching it when I was washing my face

@QueenBee52

random question

what if your hair does not grow.. think decades of iron deficiencies B12 Folic etc..

so hair has literally not grown for nearly 10 years...

How do you, get the hair tints out of the hair and turn grey without cutting the much treasured ONLY hair you have....

Does hair tint eventually turn Grey 🤔 or not 😩

asking for a friend 👀

AVeryGreyLady · 23/06/2021 19:35

This is me after a year of no dye.
I was (and still is) looking rough but I am getting there :)
I am 39. Don't care if I look older - I am still 39 :) I actually find older women so much more interesting than young ones. So don't really take looking older as an offence.

Looking wonderful @AnnieSnap and @AVeryGreyLady. It’s nice to see the thread’s back on track after that burst of nasty posts.

MaMelon · 23/06/2021 20:15

That’s gorgeous @AVeryGreyLady! Smile

Cocolapew · 23/06/2021 20:27

You all look lovely Smile
I have Lupus and lost a lot of hair before being diagnosed.
It stopped falling out as much when I got medication but it didn't grow back until I stopped dyeing it, maybe if you stop tinting it, it might start to grow @QueenBee52?
I started taking Vit B12 and mine got darker, I was horrified Grin

TheVampiresWife · 23/06/2021 20:36

Some absolute beauts on this thread! I'd love to go grey (my hair is currently dyed black, has been for years, but I'm pure white underneath). DH ain't having it though. When I've not dyed it for a few weeks and expressed a fancy to grow it all out his comments have been less than complimentary, let's say. He's going grey and bald but that's fine apparently!

OP, I'd just grow it out rather than the whole bleach/tone thing. The upkeep will be a nightmare and it'll take a toll on the condition. Use root cover spray/powder to get over the first few months then brazen it out. It'll look gorgeous!

TheVampiresWife · 23/06/2021 20:41

@BearOfEasttown you know what's really ugly and unflattering? Rudeness Smile
