Grey hair - with pics

OK so I'm looking some advice.

Attached is a pic of my hair 3 weeks post root colouring at the hairdressers which cost £60. Obviously I would love to be able to manage the upkeep of this by having a full time stylist and disposable income at my finger tips, but I don't Sad

I am a young (ish) looking 38 Yr old. I sometimes get ID for over 25 places etc. Most people are surprised that I'm 38 and most would put me at 28 ish without this being a braggy one!

WIBU to bit the bullet to go grey. I'm not talking about just leaving it to go naturally and looking two tone for god knows how long. I'm talking about bleaching it up and dying it a funky grey with the intent to then let it do what it wants?

Am I being silly to even consider this? I'm not sure I could pull off a funky grey...

Has anyone ever done this and pulled it off successfully? I follow some 'Greys' on Instagram but they are properly glam, whereas I am less so Grin

YABU - keep with the brown & 3wk upkeep
YANBU - bleach it up then go silver grey

Thanks

I think you look like an attractive lady on that pic. (Posted 23.15 yesterday-Tuesday.) But I'm sorry, you do look older than 53 (to me.) I would have said closer to 58-60. And the grey hair is probably part of the reason.[/quote]
Wow, it must be miserable being so needlessly dickish to total strangers on the internet. Telling them you don't think they look that good even when they've said they feel happy with how they look. Imagine how sad a person needs to be to then tear them down personally about their appearance rather than just making a general point. Embarrassing.

I would rather have my roots done regularly than go grey and that’s what I do.

I do my roots at home in between going to the salon. It’s quick, cheap and easy…I don’t do it perfectly but I make sure my hairline and parting is done properly at least..

reader12 · 23/06/2021 14:16

I wouldn’t try doing this yourself. I’ve had it done at a hairdressers, it took two goes and the bleached bits are still a slightly weird yellow colour and quite damaged. I love it though and am so so relieved to be finished with dying roots brown. I tone it with bleach London charcoal grey every now and then and it looks fine. I wanted to do it for years but was too scared of looking like an old lady. I wish I hadn’t put it off - the root regrowth was much more aging than the all over silver.

Sanguinesuzy · 23/06/2021 14:19

@BearOfEasttown what a nasty unnecessary remark. To say all women are desperate to look younger is such a generalisation. You might but not everyone. Most just want to look nice. And let's be honest even if someone dyes their hair it's pretty easy to tell who's in their 40 or 50s but really who cares ? What's wrong with being in your 40s, 50s or 60s. Why not post a photo of your self ? Let's have a laugh.

Twocrabs20 · 23/06/2021 14:30

Around a similar age I went grey naturally - like you I couldn’t afford the upkeep. 4 years I came back to brown and felt a whole lot better for it. I’d say try grey and see how you feel

Cocolapew · 23/06/2021 14:46

I'm 53, I look 53 because I have middle aged spread, I have wrinkles and eye bags. Dyeing my hair back to its original dark brown is not going to make me look any younger.
I never get mistaken for someone much older because I have grey hair, I've have nothing but compliments on it pretty muchly weekly.

Chikapu · 23/06/2021 14:49

Aren't you still going to have an awful lot of expensive upkeep though?

Cocolapew · 23/06/2021 14:55

This is my hair bleached and toned silver a few years ago. The silver eventually fades so you have to keep doing it, plus the bleaching to get it light enough wrecks it, it needs to be white to start.

This is my real one and it adds at least quarter of a century on Sad

This is the second thread about silver hair that has been full of lovely, confident women building other women up...and then a couple of posters come on and tell us we are all deluded and look 10 years older lol!

It really is the oddest behaviour. I'm 55 with long, silver hair, but it would never enter my head to go on a thread about highlights or balayage or whatever, and tell all those women their hair choices were wrong!

I mean, it's not complicated: if you don't want silver hair, don't grow it out.

I wondered if they feel threatened by our quiet confidence?

that's so healthy looking too.. just beautiful 🌸

Greyhairdontcare1982 · 23/06/2021 15:32

@Cocolapew you mustn’t be doing it right if it only adds quarter of a century. Or you’re deluded. Everyone knows grey hair is the most ageing thing ever. EVER.

Good job us folks with grey hair are hilarious eh otherwise we’d have nowt going for us!

Dillidilly · 23/06/2021 15:35

@Greyhairdontcare1982 I was going to post a picture of my silver hair...but then thought best not, don't want people's screens cracking due to my aged crone-like appearance!

FuckyouCovid21 · 23/06/2021 15:39

@billy1966 it does look lovely when first done but it grows so quick so after a fortnight my roots are showing and the greys come through. I usually have a full head colour but because of all the different lights I've had over the years, it comes out all different shades. Maybe I should have a few greys with the blonde and reduce the blonde each time

Greyhairdontcare1982 · 23/06/2021 15:43

Quite right @Dillidilly, you should probably stay indoors actually to avoid offending people in public as well 👍🏻🙄

Dillidilly · 23/06/2021 15:46

@Greyhairdontcare1982 you don't mean to say you go out?!
I've stayed in since 2015 when I started growing out the silver. I felt it was only decent.

You look absolutely amazing!
Hope you bought the hat because it really suits you.
Love the style, the thick glasses and the hair of course, women like you make me look forward to being in my 50s!

This . I will always happily sow off my silver hair because I'm proud of it no matter how many times sad people try to pop my bubble. It must be so annoying to be so perfect .

I'm 50 and think she looks great. Being a healthy weight makes a massive difference, and has much more of an impact on how old you look than the colour of your hair. Thick healthy hair with natural colour variations is also much more youthful than a helmet head dye job. And a good dye job takes so much time, Sali Hughes was in the chair for 8h! Men don't do this so why do women? Because of Aunt Lydias like Bear.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/06/2021 16:05

@WorraLiberty

I look younger with grey hair. Flat, dyed hair that is too dark for your skin tone is incredibly aging. People assume my grey is hair is dyed and therefore don't assume I'm a pensioner.

I'll have to take your word for that (it making you look younger) but I've genuinely never seen that effect of anyone in real life - not that looking younger matters to a lot of people, but like I said it seems to matter to the OP.

I'm not sure why anyone would assume only pensioners have grey hair though?

I know plenty of 30+ women and men who are going grey.

You stated everyone with grey hair looks older. If people can have grey hair in their 30s by you own admission then people in their 40s or 50s could easily look a decade or more younger than they are.
Vicliz24 · 23/06/2021 16:05

@fastfood thank you so much . In my experience so far our 50s can be a very rewarding decade .

I haven't stated that at all if you go back and read my post. I stated that it never makes anyone look younger, which is not the same thing at all.
