Grey hair - with pics

OK so I'm looking some advice.

Attached is a pic of my hair 3 weeks post root colouring at the hairdressers which cost £60. Obviously I would love to be able to manage the upkeep of this by having a full time stylist and disposable income at my finger tips, but I don't Sad

I am a young (ish) looking 38 Yr old. I sometimes get ID for over 25 places etc. Most people are surprised that I'm 38 and most would put me at 28 ish without this being a braggy one!

WIBU to bit the bullet to go grey. I'm not talking about just leaving it to go naturally and looking two tone for god knows how long. I'm talking about bleaching it up and dying it a funky grey with the intent to then let it do what it wants?

Am I being silly to even consider this? I'm not sure I could pull off a funky grey...

Has anyone ever done this and pulled it off successfully? I follow some 'Greys' on Instagram but they are properly glam, whereas I am less so Grin

YABU - keep with the brown & 3wk upkeep
YANBU - bleach it up then go silver grey

Thanks

Silver Revolution, Grombre Uk, The Silver Circle and Going Gorgeously Gray on Facebook are good to look at the different stages of transitioning.

Want2beme · 23/06/2021 21:30

Hairdresser says I'm 30% grey, so I just asked for some blondish highlights, no base colour, and I'm really happy with it. I'm 54. Hope I end up with the lovely white grey hair my aunt's got.

dementedma · 23/06/2021 21:31

I'm 57 and would have completely white hair...if I didnt dye it purple.

AnnieSnap · 23/06/2021 22:17

@MaMelon

Definitely not Smile I know we’re not supposed to talk about age on MN but you definitely look younger than 62 - I had you at early to mid fifties before I saw your age.
Oh bless you 😘 Can you be my new BBF? 🙂
AnnieSnap · 23/06/2021 22:21

@AVeryGreyLady Your hair looks great.

The condition is so much better without colouring too!

AVeryGreyLady · 23/06/2021 22:24

Thank you :) I can't wait to cut off all the coloured bits.

QueenBee52 · 23/06/2021 23:29

@AVeryGreyLady

This is me after a year of no dye. I was (and still is) looking rough but I am getting there :) I am 39. Don't care if I look older - I am still 39 :) I actually find older women so much more interesting than young ones. So don't really take looking older as an offence.

beautiful.. so so nice 🌸

QueenBee52 · 23/06/2021 23:30

@Cocolapew

You all look lovely Smile I have Lupus and lost a lot of hair before being diagnosed. It stopped falling out as much when I got medication but it didn't grow back until I stopped dyeing it, maybe if you stop tinting it, it might start to grow *@QueenBee52*? I started taking Vit B12 and mine got darker, I was horrified Grin

I literally just started B12 injections..

thank you ...

Im going to stop the colouring.. not sure if it makes any difference but Ive never used Permanent.. only Temp Colour 🌸💕

QueenBee52 · 23/06/2021 23:31

Im gonna speak to a hairdresser... Im very excited ☺️

Cocolapew · 23/06/2021 23:40

Fingers crossed QueenBee. My hair loss was very noticeable, it was mainly around my hair line. It's all grew back in now.

Menopause hair thinning scarily. Decided to let the grey grow out took two years. It's now thick and shiny again. People think I have white streaks put in

Cocolapew · 24/06/2021 00:44

Generally, I don't think men think it looks wonderful
Oh no!

QueenBee52 · 24/06/2021 01:02

@Rangoon

I'm not saying she should dye her hair but she has asked for opinions and people will have different opinions. I did say she might not care in the slightest what men think. I'm not saying she should dye her hair because men might like it more. I'm just giving my viewpoint.
Welcome to 1954.
Justilou1 · 24/06/2021 05:03

Here is a link to Sali Hughes Guardian article about why she’s ditched the dye. She’s about the same age, and she’s looking FABULOUS!!!

Generally, I don't think men think it looks wonderful and yes, some partners etc may say that it looks great on their wife

Quick ladies - get the hair dye NOW and save the men!!!! Shock

@Rangoon - hush now, you’re making a fool of yourself.

MaMelon · 24/06/2021 07:15

Sali Hughes looks like she’s got very blond highlights with darker roots Confused

Dillidilly · 24/06/2021 07:26

Won't someone think of the poor menz?!

Why does it matter what men think? Genuine question.

Mine too, particularly at the front. I've always had almost unmanageably think hair so it's quite a shock. I've often wondered if dyeing is making it worse.
Blossomtoes · 24/06/2021 08:37

Ffs @Rangoon, where do we start with that little lot? I was completely grey when I met my bloke, my hair was one of the first things he complimented me on.

As for career limitation - you really have to be joking. My progression was much faster in the 20 odd years of my working life with grey hair than it was in the 20 when it was dyed. There’s ageism in the workplace for sure but it’s not dependent on the colour of your hair.

I just wish we could stop deifying youth and fighting every sign of age. Our society treats getting older like some kind of disfiguring disease and we should stop colluding with and reinforcing it.

There are some absolutely beautiful women on this thread who completely defy all the ageist nonsense. We need to do it more, not less.
