Grey hair - with pics

OK so I'm looking some advice.

Attached is a pic of my hair 3 weeks post root colouring at the hairdressers which cost £60. Obviously I would love to be able to manage the upkeep of this by having a full time stylist and disposable income at my finger tips, but I don't Sad

I am a young (ish) looking 38 Yr old. I sometimes get ID for over 25 places etc. Most people are surprised that I'm 38 and most would put me at 28 ish without this being a braggy one!

WIBU to bit the bullet to go grey. I'm not talking about just leaving it to go naturally and looking two tone for god knows how long. I'm talking about bleaching it up and dying it a funky grey with the intent to then let it do what it wants?

Am I being silly to even consider this? I'm not sure I could pull off a funky grey...

Has anyone ever done this and pulled it off successfully? I follow some 'Greys' on Instagram but they are properly glam, whereas I am less so Grin

YABU - keep with the brown & 3wk upkeep
YANBU - bleach it up then go silver grey

Thanks

Don't do either!

Bleaching it up isn't the answer.

I grew mine out and ended up with the salt and pepper grey, disappointed to find that I was more pepper than the nice bright grey/white. I have stuck with it as decided I was fine to look my age (early 40s) but that's not for everyone. Iwould suggest if you don't want salt and pepper then I would have some lighter highlights rather than all over grey, which will be even more high maintenance (and not good for the health of your hair).

CoRhona · 22/06/2021 19:21

I'd stay brown, but using something like Clairol touch up to extend the length between visits to the hairdresser.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 22/06/2021 19:25

Mine has been slowly coming through in strands since I was late 20's so 15 years now. Some parts are completely grey, some still original colour. I have chosen to view them as natural highlightsSmile. I do use purple shampoo once a week and extra rich conditioner to help where it's more brittle.

@Greyhairdontcare1982 you look amazing! It really suits you.

yeOldeTrout · 22/06/2021 19:33

if you make it all grey then it will look funny growing in grey & browns

I don't think your vanity is going to be appeased by anything but very expensive adjustment schedule

so glad I never dyed mine out. I am satisfied mine looks distinguished (salt & pepper)

Cocolapew · 22/06/2021 19:35

I wouldn't, the up keep is a pain. Either go for baby highlights or bite the bullet and let it grow out.
I shaved mine off and started from scratch.

Cocolapew · 22/06/2021 19:36

Greyhairdontcare1982 your hair is lovely.

Nicolastuffedone · 22/06/2021 19:40

My sister has been snowy white since she was about 50! It’s absolutely gorgeous!!!

Kindleandacuppa · 22/06/2021 19:45

@Happinesscomesfromwithin

I would not go for the grey look. It's incredibly hard to keep and will most likely fade out within a few washes. I would go for babylights which are extra thin highlights all over. Should blend everything in nicely as it grows.
Agree with this

That’s so pretty. Aren’t you lucky?

it happens to all of us Sad

Someone I know had dark hair she was your age but looked younger but her roots were so white! She bit the bullet and went through the process of colouring it grey until eventually she didn't have to and she looks bloody stunning.

Don't get me wrong it took time and patience. She went through so many colours some she even cried over but it was worth it in the end.

MrsFlinch · 22/06/2021 20:16

I would love to have the confidence to go grey.
I would say (judging by my roots) I’m completely grey at the front and sides but salt and pepper through the back.

I’m sick of dyeing it but as soon as my roots get to a noticeable length every man and his dog seem to think they’ve a right to comment or an opinion. Especially my own mother!
My dad didn’t know I had any grey and mentioned it (not in a judgemental way, just surprised) last time my roots needed doing. Mum jumped in and said yes she usually dyes it or covers it up!

I told my dad I’ve considered letting it go as I’m fed up dyeing it!
Stock answer from mum “oh no, you’re too young to go grey you’ll have to get those roots done!” (I’m 46!)

Hmm

So that makes me self conscious and I end up dyeing it again. If I knew it was all grey and no salt and pepper I’d seriously consider it but I just can’t imagine what it would look like. Don’t want to waste all that time growing it out only to not like it and dye it again.

If you have the confidence to go grey then definitely do it.

Taliskerskye · 22/06/2021 20:17

I would say you don’t have the grey for it yet. Those amazing greys well they look amazing.
You’re more pepper. So I fear it will just make it look a bit straggly unless you dye it properly grey.
Which is fine,
But your natural grey isn’t grey enough. If you get what I mean!

randomkey123 · 22/06/2021 20:23

I'm growing mine out (2nd time) aged 50. For some stupid reason, I went and used a box dye during lockdown in the completely wrong brown (warm chocolate) when I'm a very cool dark brunette so I've colour growing out and grey. Add in a botched haircut (I asked for it graduating into my neck and longer at the front but got a Lord Farquad bob), I'm feeling decidedly pissed off every time I look in the mirror.

Let it grow out, OP. Life's too short for battling your roots every couple of weeks.

UthredofBattenberg · 22/06/2021 20:33

I was talked out of dying my hair grey by my hairdresser. It doesnt last and it's a pain to keep up.

She suggested going lighter with highlights to blend the grey, so there is no harsh line and slowly but surely let the grey come through

MatJas · 22/06/2021 20:41

This is where I get my grey regrowth and it’s so hard to hide, all the lovely ladies with either grey naturally or dyed to match their hair u all look amazing, my greys are too coarse so I will need to go to the hairdressers every couple of months so I don’t scare the children I work with 🙈

Hahahah! Grey millipede - that's exactly what I had with dark brown hair and very white roots. Nobody would describe me as glam but mine looks better than when dyed as it's thicker and more shiny now.

It doesn't. I'm almost 50 and not a grey hair to be seen. I'd actually like it to go grey!

iminthegarden · 22/06/2021 20:43

Don't go grey. Play around by all means but watch it matches your complexion or you'll look washed out. Privacy vest to find a home colour you can get on board with long term otherwise you'll spend a fortune on hairdressers

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 22/06/2021 20:51

@Blossomtoes your hair is beautiful!

Thank you, that’s so kind.

Thing is @iminthegarden, when your hair goes grey, your skin tone changes too so it all still matches. 🙂
