Care label says ‘mother can do it’

Raging but being laughed off by others when I’ve shown it so I’d like opinions please! School uniform care labels says ‘or give it to your mother she knows how to do it’.
@Chikapu yes raging, everyday sexism at a school is not funny
I agree. It assumes the mother will be doing the washing, to see the label and find it 'funny'. It's not a great message for the kid to constantly see either.

Just crass really.

MyDcAreMarvel · 22/06/2021 16:32

@MissChanandlerBong90 my children can do laundry however a child washing their own uniform is rare. The poster response was disgusting there is no need to write dead in capital letters. I too lost a parent at age 15 , I don’t take out my distress on other posters.

MyDcAreMarvel · 22/06/2021 16:35

@RickiTarr as I said I was also bereaved as a teenager. The poster was referring to herself as a teenager not as a mother know. Also completely ignoring the fact that others may have been in the same situation.

RickiTarr · 22/06/2021 16:38

Well @SilverGoblin is saying it would upset her, so there is no need to dismiss that and tell her she could only possibly be the uniform wearing child in the scenario.

MyDcAreMarvel · 22/06/2021 16:38

@SilverGoblin I lost a parent at 15 I understand the grief however writing dead in capital letters is not appropriate I know exactly what it means.
I was pointing out that the label was never intended for a child to read.

MyDcAreMarvel · 22/06/2021 16:42

@RickiTarr I didn’t say she would be the only child , I said it was unusual . Therefore probably albeit wrongly not considered by the manufacturer.

I think you’re still - probably inadvertently- missing the point other posters are making.

Jokes have their place, but not for something such as school uniform which is compulsory. Yes, more single mums than single dads, but still think of looked after children.

letsgotrilobite · 22/06/2021 17:03

It's one of those that's funny because of internalised sexism, but also ridiculous and a damaging stereotype. Especially on school uniform, I don't see the need for a joke there. It just reinforces "women do housework" to kids, whether it's a joke or not. I actually think jokes are more damaging because it reinforces the message in such a casual, "oh everyone knows that" kind of way.

Another vote for actually quite amusing Grin

Rubyupbeat · 22/06/2021 17:58

It's funny, fgs!
How ridiculous to be raging over this.....Sad!

Hexinthecity · 23/06/2021 10:30

@Wearywithteens totally agree, it’s disturbing how many women on here are happy to accept it. We’ll never get equality while half of us a sitting back tittering along with the jokes aimed at us.

As an aside my 6 year old DD this morning came down the stairs in her school summer dress and went off on one about having no pockets and how it wasn’t fair because the boys all had them and she had no where to put her things when they were playing at lunchtime. Off the back of this thread I think we’ll sit down and write a letter to Sainsbury’s to complain about the lack of pockets in her summer dress. We need to teach our daughters not to accept the status quo and stand up and expect better.

MurielSpriggs · 23/06/2021 10:58

Incidentally, and somewhat missing the point, what sort of clothing item is this that needs such care? I just tend to screw uniform into a ball and bung it in the machine with anything else lying around on some non-descript general-purpose programme with a bit of whatever powder I've got to hand. Does it get rinsed on cold? I've no sodding idea!

This seems to be a very fussy item of clothing. Does the school uniform involve cashmere and silk? Hmm

JaneJeffer · 23/06/2021 18:14

To me "she knows how to do it" means she will teach you and then you'll be able to do it yourself in future. Not something to get het up about.

As I understand it, the actual washing instructions are actually on another label with symbols elsewhere in the garment. These are just joke ones, so it's confusing as well as unfunny.

This, in spades!

I really doubt its intended to be funny.
