Care label says ‘mother can do it’

Raging but being laughed off by others when I’ve shown it so I’d like opinions please! School uniform care labels says ‘or give it to your mother she knows how to do it’.

There are even Mother’s Day cards available with this script!

I would be so fucking disappointed if my dd presented me with a card like this. Thankfully, she knows better!
noworklifebalance · 20/06/2021 15:42

possibly because we are so far away from that sexist crap that we can laugh about it.

I am guessing the professionally offended haven't quite reached that level, feel inferior in real life and use forum to release their anger

So naive to even think that. The rage that posters are feeling is not even about the laundry- that’s small fry. It’s all the micro aggressions, being overlooked, patronised, questions being addressed to male colleagues (automatically assumed to be senior/more knowledgeable) etc.

MotherCanDoIt · 20/06/2021 15:42

I’ve missed the previous memes about this for which I’m grateful.

@FortunesFave sorry yes that didn’t tie in well. When I say branded I meant along the lines of H&M or similar with slogans, I think they’ve put witty remarks on their care labels before as well. The school uniform shop is branded Blush but not a high street chain.

I can’t actually say who makes this which is frustrating as it would be great to be able to enable the full force on mumsnet on these numpties! I work for the school my DC will be attending and contractually am not allowed to put anything negative out there (yes really and yes I know).

The label raised a wry smile for me. My mother - if she were alive - would have found it amusing.

I didn’t like the Italian 2016 version, however “Or give it to your mother/woman, it’s her job,”

MotherCanDoIt · 20/06/2021 15:43

@LuaDipa thank you that did made me cackle Grin

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 20/06/2021 15:43

@khakiandcoral

That "label" was already going round the internet in 2015 (possibly much earlier), maybe it's for old-fashion machines? Grin
Since at least 2011!

Circulated more widely on 2016

HaveringWavering · 20/06/2021 15:43

I don’t really get it. I can see how it might be an unfunny joke that might end up on a brand of clothes worn by, say, people in their twenties (in the same way that eg overpriced juice cartons say twee things like “squash me and recycle me”) but why would a school uniform supplier need to create a jokey brand? It’s almost like the manufacturer got their labels mixed up with another line of clothes. Also, are those instructions the genuine ones (because they seem exaggeratedly prescriptive and maybe that’s part of the “joke”?) or are there other actual washing instructions elsewhere? Any why the American spelling of “color”? All really weird.

DumplingsAndStew · 20/06/2021 15:44

So it's a supplier that produces uniform solely for one school?

BikeRunSki · 20/06/2021 15:44
@BikeRunSki I’m sad this isn’t the only case, did you raise it with the school?
Not with school, it was underwear.

MotherCanDoIt · 20/06/2021 15:45

Perhaps they’re expecting the mother to hand wash warm and then cold rinse since it’s not a normal machine setting….

A joke on a care label that most children will probably never read, unless it's pointed out to them, is harmless, imo.

If you're worried about boys growing up thinking that women have to do their laundry for them, the way to stop it is to teach them otherwise. Children who think laundry is women's work generally think that because that's what they've seen modelled all their lives.

MotherCanDoIt · 20/06/2021 15:46

@DumplingsAndStew no I know they produce for quite a few schools locally

Oh ffs stop it 🙄🙄

In the UK?

HaveringWavering · 20/06/2021 15:47

Surely the supplier must make uniform for hundreds of schools?

ineedaholidaynow · 20/06/2021 15:49

Do they have any labels that mention dads?

This is not ok to put on children's clothing, and I speak as the person who does most of the laundry in our house, but that is how we allocated the chores. DH does most of the cooking, but has been known to put a load of washing on and wield an iron

WorraLiberty · 20/06/2021 15:50

Even in the unlikely event that wasn't the case, the OP couldn't be more anonymous if she was hiding on a beach, dressed as a grain of sand...
KarmaStar · 20/06/2021 15:50

The comments on here show how bad the world is.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/06/2021 15:50

It is both mildly funny (I don't expect perrier award winning comedy in my clothes labels) and mildly sexist (playing off sexist roles). After all, the joke isn't intended for the child who is wearing the clothes, it's aimed at the adult who is reading the label before washing it. The joke is on them for not knowing, not on their mother who already know this basic life skill. The adult reading the label may be male or female and the comment is basically 'how do you not know this yet when you are old enough to have school age children'.

77kidsandcounting · 20/06/2021 15:50

Bloody hell, its a joke 🙄

HaveringWavering · 20/06/2021 15:51

Since you work for the school, would you consider raising it with the Head? S/he may be able to raise it with the supplier.

Diwoo · 20/06/2021 15:53

Completely unacceptable on school uniform, as is the misspelling.

Trouvaille · 20/06/2021 15:55

That’s just a joke, no problem with that.
