DH thinks this is disgusting

Feel free to absolutely let me have it but me out please.
We live in a house with a downstairs toilet/bathroom which is the absolute bane of my existence 🙄
I'm 33 weeks pregnant so I feel like I need to have a wee basically every half hour these days. I've been managing going downstairs every night when I wake up for the past few months but I've reached the end of my tether. I just can't do it anymore 😭😭 My back aches, my bump is in the way, I'm exhausted and nauseated and I'm just ready to have baby already 😑
I need multiple trips to the toilet and I just can handle going downstairs that many times in one night.

So yes I have bought myself a little travel potty with a lid which I use. 🙈🙈🙈
It's out on the landing so not in our bedroom and I empty it and clean it first thing in the morning I swear!

It's made such a difference to me but DH thinks it's absolutely disgusting.
I know he has every right to think that but what would you do in my shoes 😅 AIBU?

I also nearly tripped on the stairs a few times because I'm half asleep going down them.
We're currently house hunting and definitely won't be making the same mistake going for downstairs loo.

Times change & it's just not what we're used to anymore-that hardly makes it disgusting!

Not ideal maybe-but as they say-deperate times...

We swapped bed sides temporarily so that I didn't have to bother walking round it!

GrolliffetheDragon · 19/06/2021 16:40

Not sure why it's better to completely rearrange your house by moving the bedroom downstairs and the living room upstairs!

We had a downstairs bathroom when I was pregnant, but thankfully the master bedroom had a tiny ensuite toilet - but it was so small it was actually difficult to get in to when I was heavily pregnant as the door opened inwards and couldn't open fully as the sink was in the way! If I'd got any larger it would have been a case of removing the door or doing the same as the OP. Given that I would feel the need to wee again within minutes if baby gave a particularly well aimed kick, some nights I'd have been up and down the steep stairs constantly if I'd had to use the downstairs bathroom. Sleeping was difficult enough anyway!

1WayOrAnother2 · 19/06/2021 16:41

It is disgusting... that he isn't carrying you up and downstairs at any time of night. :) If he really isn't willing or able, you are very kind to consider using a chamber pot.

Emptying it (or carrying you) could be his part in this whole growing-a-human process.

laalaaland · 19/06/2021 16:42

There is nothing glamorous about pregnancy and parenthood. I think when you grow a human inside your body for 9 months that gives you every right to do whatever you need to be comfortable.

Is this your first child by any chance? If he thinks that's disgusting he's got a real shock coming! Kids are great, but definitely gross at times!

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 19/06/2021 16:46

@hamstersarse

I think it’s a bit grim, sorry 😳 Stagnant piss?

I don’t remember stairs being so bad when pregnant, but I could imagine crouching on a potty being pretty hard when heavily pregnant.

Good point.

Ask him if he'd mind a receptacle of piss that's got some motion, as that's not disgusting.

5zeds · 19/06/2021 16:46

Honestly I think it’s a bit yucky. I’d rather sleep on the couch than do that, but you two aren’t me and I think just do what suits you both.

PattyPan · 19/06/2021 16:50

I’d move the bed downstairs to be honest. The potty is fine but not having anywhere to wash your hands is yak

LoopTheLoops · 19/06/2021 16:56

I’m sorry but I do think it’s gross, I’ve had 4 kids and 2 emcs and I could never imagine peeing downstairs during the day because I only have a toilet upstairs which is the equivalent really. I’m surprised so many people think it’s fine! I would sleep downstairs

moostermum · 19/06/2021 16:58

Does he realise he's going to be pissed and shat on by the baby for about 2 years?

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 19/06/2021 17:00

Sorry - with DP here

ChubbyMsSunshine · 19/06/2021 17:00

What's he's going to do when your child is potty training?!?!?!

LH1987 · 19/06/2021 17:01

Totally impressed you’re able to crouch over a potty at 33 weeks, I’m not pregnant and would struggle with that now!

peboh · 19/06/2021 17:04

I personally do find it a little gross, as I wouldn't want wee sitting out over night l.and I also would have struggled more to crouch it than do the stairs when I was heavily pregnant. However I'm not you, so can only speak for myself.

SummerHouse · 19/06/2021 17:05

Disgusting. Get rid of it. And once he's gone you can use your potty to your heart's content. Grin

SummerHouse · 19/06/2021 17:05

Or consider using his sock draw instead.

Castlepeak · 19/06/2021 17:07

He is being ridiculous. My DH would have volunteered to empty and clean the thing every morning. He would have hated doing it, but he would have done it without saying a word to me. I know, because he went out of his way to deal with my hyperemesis for 9 months and never complained.

OrangeSharked · 19/06/2021 17:07

I mean it is a bit grim tbh. Not sure I'd be too happy with Dp pissing on the landing.

A travel potty is tiny, I cant really understand why crouching down over a tiny potty is easier for you than the stairs.

Then there's the chance of missing, and getting piss on the carpet. Or the chance of spilling on the way down.

Then there's the storing of the pissy potty on the landing. Most potty's are kept in the bathroom, I know its cleaned but I'm really not sure I could walk past a travel potty on my landing every day

Theres something for me about the squatting over a tiny travel potty that gets me. Maybe a proper commode would feel better? Less risk of spillage? And feels more appropriate for an adult to use

AlmostSummer21 · 19/06/2021 17:08

@Toilenstripes

I agree it’s gross, but your safety and comfort trump anything. Tell him you’re carrying his child and get to be as disgusting as you want! 😆
Why is it even gross?
Lemonwoe · 19/06/2021 17:09

No vagina- no opinion!!

AntiHop · 19/06/2021 17:10

My only toilet is downstairs and I recently had a baby. Personally I'd rather go down to the toilet than keep a bucket of wee in my bedroom.

lljkk · 19/06/2021 17:12

I would sleep in the bathroom downstairs before I resorted to a commode or potty on the landing.

I hope your H finds some tolerance but I can also understand why he finds it rank.

roobicoobi · 19/06/2021 17:20

@Lemonwoe

No vagina- no opinion!!
What has the vagina got to do with it?
480Widdio · 19/06/2021 17:21

It’s revolting to me,how do you wash your hands? Go and sleep downstairs for a few weeks, problem solved.

My Mother used to pee in a potty she kept under the bed and she slept next to the bathroom! I still remember how ashamed of her it made me feel.

iklboo · 19/06/2021 17:23

Go and sleep downstairs for a few weeks, problem solved.

That will be so comfortable for a 33 week pregnant woman to sleep on the couch.

Hallyup6 · 19/06/2021 17:32

@iklboo

I agree with your husband. It's disgusting. Pregnancy doesn't prevent you from walking down the staircase, even with all the aches and pains. In fact, it'll do you good to keep active. The only reason I'd think otherwise is if you had severe SPD and were on crutches

Nobody needs to 'keep active' 3-4 times in the middle of the night. That's when you're suppose to be resting.

Oh come off it, it's a two minute trip to the loo. It's hardly the Olympics. It isn't going to kill her to walk downstairs a few times a night. It's not going to impact on her rest time. Much better for her than to be sleeping next to a potty full of stinking stale piss.
