My friend has just got a kitten who is 4 months old.
She lives at home with her Dad (my friend not the kitten)
Anyway I said in a couple of weeks shall we do lunch ..her response
" I won't be able to because of the kitten,I can't leave her,I have to pop to the shops when she's asleep"

So I said "your dads home and lunch is only a hour"

She said "no she's too fast for him and we leave the patio doors open"
So I suggested maybe closing the doors for a hour

She said "I have responsibilities now and this is my life at home with her"

I mean surely you wouldn't let a kitten rule your life ?Grin
Imagine if she had a job ..would she never go to work again.
Aibu to think this is bat shit ?

Absolutely 100% batshit

DrManhattan · 14/06/2021 19:15

She doesn't want to go out. Kitten is the excuse

Unmute · 14/06/2021 19:15

Batshit, or she just doesn't want to have lunch with you

MinkeDinkie · 14/06/2021 19:20

"I mean surely you wouldn't let a kitten rule your life ?"

You have clearly never owned a cat Grin

But yeah that's bonkers. Even my cat let's me out for an hour or two Wink

cormorantes · 14/06/2021 19:22

Can you offer to take food to hers for lunch? If she says no because the kitten doesn't like visitors I think you have your answer.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 14/06/2021 19:23

I don't think she's your friend op.

MerryMarigold · 14/06/2021 19:23

Hahaha that's so true
InnaBun · 14/06/2021 19:24

I don't think she likes you

NotTheCatsWhiskers · 14/06/2021 19:25

She doesn’t want to go out.

My 3 month old kitten copes when I go out by staring out the window or sleeping stretched out on the sofa.

covetingthepreciousthings · 14/06/2021 19:26

@DrManhattan

She doesn't want to go out. Kitten is the excuse
This 10000%
Faranth · 14/06/2021 19:26

It sounds to me more like she can't trust her Dad not to let the kitten out, whether by accident or on purpose, and she doesn't want to risk it!

KarmaStar · 14/06/2021 19:28

She's bonding with her kitten who has just left her mum and litter .
Take round some lunch and play with the kitten.🌈🐈🐈

Hagqueen · 14/06/2021 19:29

Honestly, I get her. Its stressful and anxiety inducing having a new pet - I still worry about my pup and she’s far older than that! It will pass!

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 14/06/2021 19:29

Batshit.

But I'd rather spend my time looking after a kitten than going out for lunch, too.

Glitterblue · 14/06/2021 19:29

Our boy was 7 months when we got him so not quite so young, but still a kitten, and he'd had a traumatic start to his life before we got him from a shelter. We still managed to go out and leave him - he just slept the whole time, and we closed off most rooms and just let him have the living room, kitchen and the little toilet where his litter tray is. Then as he got more used to us we trusted him with more of the house when we were out. Cats are very self sufficient animals, I think she's making excuses.

LST · 14/06/2021 19:30

I am massive cat fan. I have 3. We had a kitten last August and I did stay home from camping with dp and the kids for a few weeks as I didn't want to leave her overnight so young (my mum comes round 3 times a day when we go camping) but I am talking tiny 10 week old kitten. At 4 months surely they're settled in and ok to be left!?

PainterInPeril · 14/06/2021 19:31

I'm sorry but if I had to choose between a friend and beautiful little kitten, I'd choose the kitten too!Grin

ChristmasFluff · 14/06/2021 19:33

4 months is not that much of a kitten.

She doesn't want to go to lunch.

XenoBitch · 14/06/2021 19:36

Yeah, that is batshit. Cats are independent. Kitten will be fine to be left. Puppies are a different matter.
Sounds like she is just making excuses tbh.

Ideasplease322 · 14/06/2021 19:40

I could understand if the kitten was eight weeks old and just new, but this is bullshit.

She doesn’t want to go out and she thinks this is a good excuse. It really isn’t.

DoingItMyself · 14/06/2021 19:41

You mentioned a kitten, without a photograph.

Thenose · 14/06/2021 19:44

She needs a cat buggy.

TrickorTreacle · 14/06/2021 19:45

I've had cats for nearly all of my life. A family of 2 full timers and 2 school-aged kids. Our latest cat was 11 weeks old when we got her and it was during a half term week. So we gave her the week to settle in with us being at home all the time. Then school and work beckoned and the kitten, now at 3 months old, she was fine to be left alone for a few hour every week day.

The OP's friend is clearly a reclusive who doesn't want a social life.

Credit where credit is due though - it wasn't a lockdown puppy/kitten that she went for. At least she waited until near the end of the pandemic, so I'll give her that :-)

2bazookas · 14/06/2021 19:45

Why not leave her at home with the patio door open, and take the kitten out for lunch? It would probably be more fun.

WineAcademy · 14/06/2021 19:46

@DoingItMyself

You mentioned a kitten, without a photograph.
My thoughts exactly.
