My friend has just got a kitten who is 4 months old.
She lives at home with her Dad (my friend not the kitten)
Anyway I said in a couple of weeks shall we do lunch ..her response
" I won't be able to because of the kitten,I can't leave her,I have to pop to the shops when she's asleep"

So I said "your dads home and lunch is only a hour"

She said "no she's too fast for him and we leave the patio doors open"
So I suggested maybe closing the doors for a hour

She said "I have responsibilities now and this is my life at home with her"

I mean surely you wouldn't let a kitten rule your life ?Grin
Imagine if she had a job ..would she never go to work again.
Aibu to think this is bat shit ?

Yeah she's keeping it as a house cat.
She doesn't have a job no.

Batshit but also… new kitten!

EachandEveryone · 16/06/2021 11:30

Whether indoor (which is abit mean if she has a garden) or not this kitten needs spaying asap. Does your friend realise this?

ScottishNewbie · 16/06/2021 12:12

I stayed home for about a week when I got my two kittens at 12 weeks. They were tiny and scared and I wanted to figure out any danger points in my home. Luckily I did, because one of my boys has a bit of a string fetish and will just devour it lol.

After a week we had everything figured out and I was happy to leave for a few hours or a day or whatever. We got a cheap camera off of Amazon to keep an eye on them.

To be honest, if she won't leave them at 6 months old then either she has severe anxiety issues or she's using them as an excuse not to see you.

(I've done the latter Grin )

CaptainThe95thRifles · 16/06/2021 14:02

Well now I have serious kitten-envy!

PandemicAtTheDisco · 16/06/2021 15:57

Quite a few puppy people I know have been like this. They treat them like babies at first but it does wear off after a few months.

Nowhereelsetogo90 · 16/06/2021 18:55

That’s insane. I got my two cats as 8 week old kittens on a Friday. Settled them in over weekend and was at work on Monday! They are six now and thriving, don’t seem to have been traumatised by the experience Confused

Fluffyscamp · 17/06/2021 10:17

@Nishky I’m allergic to short haired cats but long haired cats don’t bother me anywhere near as much. I didn’t know this till my DP came home with a long haired kitten one day and I was fine. He was the best cat ever. I now have another long haired cat who is slightly grumpier but I’m not allergic to her either and I am definitely still allergic to short haired cats. I know everyone with allergies is different but maybe you have hope 😁

Nishky · 17/06/2021 13:07

@Fluffyscamp wow that has made my day! I may have to experiment with different cats. That has given me hope

SofiaMichelle · 17/06/2021 13:11

Why doesn't your friend work, OP?

If it's that she's looking but not found anything she's well and truly shot herself in the foot now.

MiddlesexGirl · 18/06/2021 20:12

I'm another that is much more allergic to short haired cats than long haired.

Nishky · 18/06/2021 22:03

@MiddlesexGirl ooh clearly it is a thing

juice92 · 19/06/2021 03:23

A difficult one. I have two kittens who are currently 9 months old. The first few weeks after we got them, we didn't want to leave them alone in the house as they seemed to have the habit of getting into absolutely everything and we would only discover something was a potential danger when they got stuck in it, somehow got it wrapped around their neck (I had, had cats before, but never kittens and I honestly have never known anything like it) or started eating something we thought they wouldn't go near. For that reason if my Husband was away or unreliable then I probably wouldn't have gone out at lunch for those first few weeks, mainly because I would have been too worried.

BUT

I would have invited you round instead or told you I would meet you in a few weeks time when I knew that things would have calmed down a bit.

Yes. Also are you sure this kitten even exists? Maybe it's the neighbourhood stray she keeps around as an excuse.

If she had any imagination about her, she'd state kitten had psychological problems and needed 24/7 hour care.

A photo would be nice. Cannot say kitten without a photo Grin

cupoftea2021 · 19/06/2021 03:40

@RusholmeRuffian

Absolutely 100% batshit
😂
cupoftea2021 · 19/06/2021 03:41

Some people believe that they can not leave a new pet
I have known one completely believed the dog would not cope if they had a night out without her home.
Strange but so nowadays it seems ok to be batshit

Remaker · 19/06/2021 04:31

The reason we got cats instead of a dog is because you can leave them unsupervised. Ours were at home alone all day from when we got them at 8 weeks. They were fine.

Meanwhile my friend is doing my head in because she’s refusing to leave her 7 mth old puppy for a second. I am seriously concerned that she’s going to lose her job because she’s pushing back on any requests by her boss to work anywhere but home because she won’t leave the dog alone.

jaysus6000 · 19/06/2021 05:17

How does she know exactly how long the kitten sleeps 24 hours. What happens if she goes to the shops and it wakes up?

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 19/06/2021 05:34

My DH has used our cats as an excuse to get out of doing stuff ever since we got them. Ten years ago.
