to think Plus size clothes ranges so frumpy?

Just looking at the Yours, Evans type sites and all of is it so frumpy even by normal standards, theres often the argument that the clothes are more expensive due to more fabric, but will make extremely frumpy options with lots if fabric Confused

in the summer range, i know lots of plus size people inc me are self conscious but what about being able to show off a good cleavage? or apple shaped women who often have slimmer legs they would like to show off, its all cold shoulders or smocks with butterflies. AIBU?

Totally agree

SoddingWeddings · 10/06/2021 09:00

YES!
I'm plus size, and I want V necks not turtlenecks.
I want pockets in skirts.
I want full length skirts, not mid calf which cut off my height and make my legs look fat.
I want elbow length FITTED tshirts, not smocks.
I want FITTED shorts not paperbag waists.

I stopped shopping in Evans donkeys years ago, but their designers should have been shot. And the shop always smelled funny whatever location you were in.

Shoxfordian · 10/06/2021 09:03

I agree!
There’s nowhere near enough v necks
Also all the horrible prints

Doodle2021 · 10/06/2021 09:07

I disagree a little about yours.
I dont think its all smocks etc, its starting to become a little more fasionable. I have found playsuits and pencil skirts and all sorts in there at the moment

Evans i completely agree. The designers need to be replaced.

I have noticed a lot of the other brands are doing plus size. I think boohoo, asos, next, topshop all have plus sizes now. I havent ever looked at them but there maybe different styles much more suited to what your looking for.

DrSbaitso · 10/06/2021 09:07

When I was plus sized, I stayed miles away from those places. Hideous nylon frumpiness everywhere. Might as well have gone to the camping shop for a tent. They had more shape.

I know this isn't an option for everyone but I always had better luck at the ordinary places that just did wider size ranges. I know some details and styles don't really scale up well, but I had much more luck doing that.

Lovetoridemybicycle · 10/06/2021 09:07

I want waists that aren't elastic.

MedusasBadHairDay · 10/06/2021 09:09

Yep, they seem to think we all just want to wear hankie hemmed butterfly print tents with cold shoulders. It's depressing.

The message is definitely that we should cover ourselves up and hide away.

I'm lucky in that I'm into more vintage fashion, and quite a few of those brands will just produce plus size versions of their straight size range (I love collectif for this). But high street stores year their plus size customers like an embarrassment, even the plus size retailers.

We had a Yours branch open up here a few years back, and I really wanted to support them so I'd go in every time I was in town, but I always left empty handed because their options were so depressing. Unsurprisingly it's gone now.

MedusasBadHairDay · 10/06/2021 09:11

@Lovetoridemybicycle

I want waists that aren't elastic.
I find elasticated waists add bulk, so it's always struck me as an odd choice.
MedusasBadHairDay · 10/06/2021 09:13

For mainstream fashion Shein is surprisingly good, it's definitely cheap fashion so don't expect high quality and you absolutely can't go by the dress sizes, but they at least list the actual measurements so it's not too difficult to get the right size. And I love that they will have reviews with photos, so you can sometimes see the garment on someone with a similar body shape/ size.

ThinWomansBrain · 10/06/2021 09:16

I wear 18 now - but at one point crept up to 22 - it was the fabrics that I found so ghastly in plus size shops - nylon, crimplene and hardly any cotton.
the sizes regularly available in 'non-plus-size' shops have increased - it used to often be 14, with a few size 16, but now 18 is normal and often 20, but appreciate that beyond that there is less available.

esterwin · 10/06/2021 09:18

My older friend who loves old fashioned styles also loves Yours. It meets a certain demographics needs, just like Bon Marche does. But there is space for a very trendy plus size shop. I buy clothes from Navabi. More expensive I know but I have had gorgeous clothes from there.

user1471478181 · 10/06/2021 09:28

I’m plus what I don’t get is they put 2 sizes together for example 16/18 20/22 24/26 28/30. But I find that they smaller size.

Divebar2021 · 10/06/2021 09:28

Loads of brands do plus size ranges.. you cannot say ASOS Curve for example is remotely frumpy. I’m not saying they’re all great but they’re out there.
As a size 18 I wore Cos, Arket, Monki, Weekday, ASOS Curve, M&S ( jeans mostly) Kin at John Lewis but I know H&M have a plus size range ( I have their active wear) Mango have Violette ( I think it’s called). Have a look further afield... you will find stuff. There was also a friendly plus size thread in S&B with lots of pictures and outfit ideas shared.

fluffiphlox · 10/06/2021 09:31

Poetry and Wrap go up to a 22.

goose1964 · 10/06/2021 09:34

I've just looked at river island, I occasionally buy stuff from their normal range but he plus sizes look far better than most.

ToffeePennie · 10/06/2021 09:34

Totally disagree with yours. On Saturday I spent over £50 in there and bought a gorgeous dipped hemline dress, some really cute cut offs, a pink tshirt with cross hatching and A blue cold shoulder tshirt.
I love their clothes and as a size 20 I am always searching for new clothes and nice outfits. I wear a lot of hell bunny, lindybop and Carolina dress room dresses too. Just mix them up with different leggings and cardis usually from yours!

Have a look at Label44 - it's a small independent business from Sheffield.

I'm a 14/16 but their sizes come in either 8-16 or 16-22/24 I think. It's amazing the clothes can grow and shrink with you if your weight fluctuates like mine does. Their styles are on point and I've bought loads of stuff from there recently and I don't really wear anything else now. It's comfortable without frumpiness and all the clothes are made in Italy which is always a good thing.

I'm from Hull but ordered online and I've not sent anything back as I love every item. I got a tie dyed black dress from there last week and have had so many compliments on it. They are also on Facebook too.

maddening · 10/06/2021 09:40

Yep, you either get frumpy or bodywork mini dresses that only the most body confident plus size woman could wear.

I looked at Asos last night and all the larger size dresses looked like bags with a neck hole and were cut to mid thigh, just looked awful.

I can find stuff I like but I so have to wade through stuff which is just awful.

Lostandtired1 · 10/06/2021 09:42

I've got a pair of their magic pants on today, which I highly recommend! Quality and fabric is amazing!

That drives me mad. You can guarantee if they'd do a 14-16 and a 18-20, I'd want the 16-18 size which doesn't exist 😆
KM38 · 10/06/2021 09:47

@PasstheBucket89 completely agree! If I see one more butterfly or hanky hem 🙄🙄🙄

I’ve found the odd hidden gem on Yours - usually holiday dresses but very rarely! As some others have suggested - ASOS do a great plus size range. Lots of occasion wear too. H&M and Mango are good too. Very does a decent range - although quality can be a bit mixed. I’m a size 20 and those are usually my go-to shops!

Acrasia · 10/06/2021 09:47

ASOS are good at modifying their designs to duplicate them across all their fits, not just plus size but tall, petit and maternity collections to. The selections are not as extensive as the main selection, but still there is a lot of choice.

Lostandtired1 · 10/06/2021 09:48

Sorry I've just looked at Label44 go up to a 20 on many items Smile

ILoveShula · 10/06/2021 09:50

You're shopping in the wrong places. Look at brands that sell non-frumpy clothes in inclusive sizes. Some have already been mentioned but I'll add Seasalt.
