to think Plus size clothes ranges so frumpy?

Just looking at the Yours, Evans type sites and all of is it so frumpy even by normal standards, theres often the argument that the clothes are more expensive due to more fabric, but will make extremely frumpy options with lots if fabric Confused

in the summer range, i know lots of plus size people inc me are self conscious but what about being able to show off a good cleavage? or apple shaped women who often have slimmer legs they would like to show off, its all cold shoulders or smocks with butterflies. AIBU?

Classics rarely look fresh and new. That’s the entire point of them.

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/06/2021 13:40

Well about 16 years ago, s stylish friend of mine was wearing stan smiths, a breton top and skinny jeans and looked unusual in it.

These days, the charity shops have plenty of breton style tops and skinny jeans.

If you like the look, wear it.

Londonmummy66 · 11/06/2021 14:50

Marina Rinaldi is the plus size label for Max Mara - in that context its prices are less suprising. However I can't imagine that in a non plus size context people would be telling the OP to look at Max Mara.

The good thing is that MR doesn't hold its price well so it is relatively cheap to pick up on ebay (although it is mainly work wear etc)

I was pleasantly surprised to find Next have a curvy section. Some items up to a 28.

I've bought several a couple of really nice summer dresses in a 24 and they fit well. and only £28 each

Xmasbaby11 · 11/06/2021 15:12

I'm a 20 and buy more online these days from some ranges at John Lewis, Marks and Seasalt. I've found much nicer clothes than I used to.

Exhausted4ever · 11/06/2021 15:41

@MerryChristmasToYou I personally agree. Brenton tops scream middle aged middle class (or want to be) boring mummy

Divebar2021 · 11/06/2021 15:50

Breton stripes haven’t been in for a while but a few big designers have included them again this season. Skinny jeans are on their way out... faster or slower depending on where you are. ( and thank god too.).. they’re not necessarily the most flattering. Of course all of this is only relevant if you care about what’s “in” and “out”.

Bellbottomstovetop · 11/06/2021 16:00

I disagree. Shein, Boo Hoo and Asos are all good.

I actually find shopping easier as an 18. When I was a 12/14 there was never anything in stock. Now there's loads.

Marty13 · 11/06/2021 16:30

I think part of the issue is that fat distribution varies a LOT from people to people. So it's possible to design clothes that will look fine on most people in straight sizes, but a lot more challenging on heavier people as they carry their weight differently. E.g. someone who carries their weight in their bum are going to need a different cut to one who carries most of their weight in their thighs.

The only way around that would be to design clothes specifically for each body shape, which obviously will be a lot more expensive (a lot more time spent on design, for a public divided in smaller segments).

I don't think clothes designers hate fat people and want to dress them in frumpy clothes. They just want their clothes to fit most people while maximising their profit margin.

MedusasBadHairDay · 11/06/2021 17:22

Slim people have different body shapes too, and somehow designers manage to give them more options than just baggy tent.

The ‘Baggy tent’ look is for flabby apples or women with large tummies. Plus sized women who are toned and pear shaped are actually well catered for by the fashion industry.

That dress is in the daily mail today and a variation on the shoes. I will be popping to my local outdoors shop later to peruse the ripstop nylon.

It’s a completely different dress. I love it, so cool on a day like today. Where’s it from? I refuse to look at the Fail.

LordOfTheOnionRings · 13/06/2021 15:18

All head to ASOS please.

I am a size 20 and dress fucking fabulously. I have never EVER been accused of being frumpy.

And i'm one of your 'unfortunate' plus size ladies, I have a big ole tummy to go with my hourglass.

Don't try and cover too much, learn your body shape and what suits it and try something different!

vestastilly · 13/06/2021 15:33

@Blossomtoes it’s says it’s from Alltheprettybirds.

ExtraOnions · 13/06/2021 15:52

I like Donald Stanley (sell mainly via FB and Insta)…. And they have models that look like me, so I can see how things look. It’s pricey, but some lovely piece

TheDiddlyGang · 13/06/2021 16:04

@LordOfTheOnionRings what sort of things do you buy please?
I’m also a big bellied hourglass and I always look absolutely dreadful!

LordOfTheOnionRings · 13/06/2021 16:12

@TheDiddlyGang Don't do yourself a disservice by saying that - you should love yourself! What is your style like at the moment?

I do stick to certain styles that I know work for my figure, firstly I mainly wear dresses - this is because with my big tummy I find jeans uncomfortable. A wrap dress is always great as they're normally flattering and show some cleavage (which takes the focus off of the tummy). Shirred off the shoulder dresses are always great too with some small gold hooped earrings.

Also, a way to not feel frumpy is to always make an effort with your hair and if you have a spare minute or two, some makeup - I find even just moisturising and putting on some concealer makes me feel better and more like me. I'll link some dresses soon :)

You cannot change the way you look overnight - it's just never going to happen and you cannot spend life hating the way you look - it's not healthy.
