to think Plus size clothes ranges so frumpy?

PasstheBucket89 · 10/06/2021 08:57

Just looking at the Yours, Evans type sites and all of is it so frumpy even by normal standards, theres often the argument that the clothes are more expensive due to more fabric, but will make extremely frumpy options with lots if fabric Confused

in the summer range, i know lots of plus size people inc me are self conscious but what about being able to show off a good cleavage? or apple shaped women who often have slimmer legs they would like to show off, its all cold shoulders or smocks with butterflies. AIBU?

That £300 dress is absolutely hideous!

It looks like a sheet with holes for arms and head

zukiecat · 10/06/2021 13:45

I like Simply Be too,

I have two beautiful dresses from there, and a jacket.

I can't stand jeans and t shirts, I actually don't own a single t shirt.

Tried them and found the quality dreadful. I wound up donating most of it unworn.
ThePlantsitter · 10/06/2021 14:01

La Redoute is good for the odd thing. You do have to wade through quite a lot of crap but I have had a couple of dresses from there that I loved before - stylishly cut. I bet this is nice for example dress

I love the Anna Scholz sale generally but she does err on the wrong side of zany quite often. However the dresses are really beautiful cut as a rule.

Seasalt is a funny one because I've thought I wanted to wear their stuff for ages but when I try it's just frumpsville.

AudacityBaby · 10/06/2021 14:06

@MayIDestroyYou

this is variations on a sack

Mmm ... The thing is, the sack shape is tremendously fashionable right now. This dress isn't plus size - but it's absolutely at the cutting edge, style-wise.

It's fashionable because people who are rake-thin, and who can make anything look elegant, are doing it.

On anyone bigger than a ballerina, it can look like Homer in the muumuu.

I wouldn't mind the existence of a £300 well-made sack, if there were alternatives other than £30 non-well-made sack (with butterflies on). Grin

AudacityBaby · 10/06/2021 14:07

Each to their own though. I love Irregular Choice shoes, which I once heard described as pantomime-dame shoes. Grin

Dippysnowoman · 10/06/2021 14:08

I've recently got a few things from 'The fashion shop' which i stumbled across on facebook. They do a live session daily so you can see the clothes on real people.
Im a 20/22 and love their longer length tops and magic trousers.

I like lagenlook - lots of linen and nice colours

JustGiveMeGin · 10/06/2021 14:11

I love Asos, boo hoo , shein etc. An awful lot of plus sized retailers seem to stock clothes for the older generation (I'm 37 so not exactly youthful but not ready to hang up the towelGrin)
Asos and boo hoo are aimed at the very young but if you keep looking there is plenty of stuff in the middle range.
I'm also lucky I guess in that I can wear any fabric and I don't sweat much.

Free shipping over £100 free returns = may be worth a try??

More sacks and not even well cut ones.

@SoddingWeddings

YES! I'm plus size, and I want V necks not turtlenecks. I want pockets in skirts. I want full length skirts, not mid calf which cut off my height and make my legs look fat. I want elbow length FITTED tshirts, not smocks. I want FITTED shorts not paperbag waists.

I stopped shopping in Evans donkeys years ago, but their designers should have been shot. And the shop always smelled funny whatever location you were in.

Try Land's End, Kettlewell Colours or Cotton Traders

@MayIDestroyYou

I often find myself recommending Marina Rinaldi here. They go from size 8 to 28 and there's always something non-frumpy.

But most people don't want to spend what they ask.

Because their prices are daylight robbery and some of us have some sense. Hmm
Microwaveableteapot · 10/06/2021 20:14

I'm a 20-22 and pretty much the only high street shop I use is Monki. Bit marmite, some out there prints and shapeless sacks, but most of their stuff is oversized, so I find a L or XL fits perfectly and great for office basics. Sustainable fashion but not £300 for a sack like that Marina stuff! Shock

Yours is so hit and miss I find, they've stocked Hell Bunny in the past which I really like, but then some of it is just so awful I don't know who is wearing it!

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 10/06/2021 20:20

Completely agree! Especially if your style is a bit more edgy, many of us don’t want to wear bright colours and prints in smock-like tent garments! I really don’t understand why they’re obsessed with crop length trousers either. I’ve found good things at Torrid in the US, it’s a bit more ‘normal’!

JesusWeptonaBike · 10/06/2021 20:20

I'm fat not blind.

I wish plus sized clothes weren't so HIDEOUS

TheDiddlyGang · 10/06/2021 20:52

That purple Marina dress is hands down the most hideous, frumpy, shapeless, unflattering, eye wateringly awful ‘dress’ I have seen for a very, very long time.
I wouldn’t pay a penny for something so vile let alone nearly £300!

TheDiddlyGang · 10/06/2021 20:58

Oh no wait, there is something worse!

Just reading through the links others have posted.

Dear god.
The designers must hate us!

DrSbaitso · 10/06/2021 21:00

What are those shoes?

BoattoBolivia · 10/06/2021 21:07

I agree with pp re Ulla Popken- really great quality clothes and lots of different styles. They have lots of sports wear as well as 'younger' ranges. Not cheap but not as expensive as others posted 😁
I also like TU at Sainsbury, George at Asda and sometimes even Tesco, although you have to be selective. For more 'out there' try Dolly and Dotty online. Lots of their swing dresses have pockets!!!

ILoveShula · 10/06/2021 21:26

Ulla Popken is good, as is Tu.

dozydaisy · 10/06/2021 21:27

Im surprised no one has mentioned primark, some of their stuff goes up to a 22-24 and obviously price is cheaper than most places.

Jasmine11 · 11/06/2021 08:15

When I was plus size I used to live in things from Joules, H&M and Gap - not the most exciting of shops, but they did larger sizes of 'regular' clothes.

I just looked at the Marina Rinaldi website - so expensive and some quite hideous looking clothes - This must be the most unflattering dress I've seen in a long time!

Exhausted4ever · 11/06/2021 08:39

It's all well and good suggesting places that sell larger sizes in their ranges but as most go to a 24 at max it doesn't help those properly plus sized (like myself) who wear a 28. We are limited to "plus sized shops" like yours, simply be and Evans. I would imagine that should the op be a size 20 or something she would not be suffering through the styles (and prices!) of these shops.
I find yours hit and miss, in my local branch id say at least 50% is terrible, cold shoulders, butterflies, slogans (they particularly seem to like French) or covered in sequins or sparkly shite. Then your left with finding what suits you from what's left. Evans I only used to use in sale time for underwear but they closed my local one (unsurprisingly as it was terrible and so rarely used). Simply be has some good bits but it's the hassle of doing it all online with them.
I echo the sentiment on how hard it is to find proper length tshirts. I wear a lot of vest tops and specifically look for ones labelled long line as these are actually normal length
