to think Plus size clothes ranges so frumpy?

Just looking at the Yours, Evans type sites and all of is it so frumpy even by normal standards, theres often the argument that the clothes are more expensive due to more fabric, but will make extremely frumpy options with lots if fabric Confused

in the summer range, i know lots of plus size people inc me are self conscious but what about being able to show off a good cleavage? or apple shaped women who often have slimmer legs they would like to show off, its all cold shoulders or smocks with butterflies. AIBU?

It's very subjective. I have to say, I'm not wedded to budget - I spent £160 on two dresses yesterday, as they were vintage 70s fabrics reworked to fit size 24+, and just fantastically quirky. I'm very much not a fan of simplicity. :D

esterwin · 10/06/2021 11:25

That cotton poplin dress looks beautifully made, but would look hideous on anyone not very slim.

It would be fugly on anyone. Horrible colour, horrible style.

I think it'd look like a sack on anyone

Oh god I hate cold shoulder tops, smocks especially with butterflies, hanky hemlines, dipped hemlines etc! I want to dress like everyone else my age, in jeans and a Breton top lol. Sainsbury's are quite good for this but the sizing can be weird. Even plus size manufacturers can't get the length of t shirts right though, they could be the biggest size you can buy and they'd still be around my belly button, this does not look good when you have a flabby tummy!

I like Popsy, the fabrics are often a bit twee but the shapes are genuinely flattering when you find the one for you.

John Lewis do loads of Breton tops that fit the bill. The length tends to what you’re looking for. I’m wearing one today that covers my bum. Lots of cotton too.
Holidaystuff · 10/06/2021 12:01

I agree OP!

Also most plus size shops only sell clothes made from synthetic fabrics whereas I really like nice pure cotton tops as being chubby I think I sweat more and synthetic fabrics are worse! My top half is an 18 so luckily I can buy these elsewhere but it means shopping around.

PiccalilliChilli · 10/06/2021 12:06

I have a Simply Be account and I despair at some of their stuff. I buy their jeans, which fit well, but everything else is poor. I'm looking for shorts at the moment, and cannot find anything that will suit me. I looked for cullottes (skorts) but all were too short or have horrible patterns on them.

Lots of other retailers of similar pricing is the same. Just poor. Once you get to a certain size, it doesn't mean you like loud prints, gypsy tops and maxi skirts! I hate frilly, embellished fussy clothes! I hate shirred tops dresses and skirts! I want flattering clothes that suits my pear shape that doesn't make me look like a Christmas decoration. I want to look nice. Why can't this be achieved?

Thank you to the PP who recommended Ulla Popken I will definitely take a look.

I often find myself recommending Marina Rinaldi here. They go from size 8 to 28 and there's always something non-frumpy.

But most people don't want to spend what they ask.

A lot of people can't AFFORD to spend what they ask.

I really hope MNHQ will post this at the top of every board and thread touching on things acquired through purchase - like houses, cars, independent school places, organic food, prams ... Otherwise people might think they're absolutely obliged to buy expensive things mentioned in posts ...

Hmm

Now, there I disagree! It's clear that the fabric is relatively weighty, and there's plenty of it at the shoulders to ensure it hangs well. So, in the correct size, worn with the right underwear, (and possibly shortened, if necessary) that dress would skim over all bulges and look very sleek, even in their largest size.

I always recall a teacher I had, many decades ago, who must have been at least a UK size 24. She was astonishingly well groomed, with lovely skin, beautifully shiny hair and was always immaculately well dressed. I can well imagine her wearing just such a frock. (And suspect her own clothes were pretty expensive, too.)

Bbq1 · 10/06/2021 13:19

What a horrible dress, vile on anyone. A horrible cut and length and looks like a shapeless sack. It actually reminds me of a work apron on something an exceedingly frumpy person would wear circa 1970. Yuk, yuk, yuk. Size 6 or size 26, it would look terrible on anyone.

This is the definition of frumpy. Being well-made doesn't excuse it. There's no shape to any of the cuts.

I'd pay the prices if I thought it would be remotely flattering but this is variations on a sack.

LoopTheLoops · 10/06/2021 13:27

People hate boohoo but whatever this is why I shop with them as there’s isn't frumpy like most places

StevieNix · 10/06/2021 13:31

Yanbu -There’s one or two hidden gems on yours now and then but the vast majority is so frumpy! Also I find the price really inflated for what it actually is

zukiecat · 10/06/2021 13:32

I love Yours!

I buy most of my clothes from there, I've always adored smock type dresses and tops, and the tiered styled dresses are all beautiful, I have quite a few of them, and tiered and smock tops.

I've always worn long tiered skirts and dresses, and I can't get enough of them, or the boho style blouses and tops. I don't care what's fashionable and what isn't, I just wear what I want, and is comfortable for me,

ScottishNewbie · 10/06/2021 13:33

I agree with @KM38

It depends what size you're looking for, but H&M XXL in their regular range is far too big for me as a size 18 I would say most of them would easily fit a size 20 and their dresses are gorgeous. I've never liked them in the past, but I've purchased my entire summer wardrobe this season. I've had so many compliments recently.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 10/06/2021 13:33

I'm not sure what dress Mal is looking at but I'm just seeing this....

THIS -- the lack of natural fabrics in plus sizes absolutely kills me. Summer is awful; spending it wearing clothing made out of the equivalent of bin liners makes it that much worse.
MayIDestroyYou · 10/06/2021 13:34

Mmm ... The thing is, the sack shape is tremendously fashionable right now. This dress isn't plus size - but it's absolutely at the cutting edge, style-wise.

Fair, but a fashionable sack is still a sack.
