to think Plus size clothes ranges so frumpy?

PasstheBucket89 · 10/06/2021 08:57

Just looking at the Yours, Evans type sites and all of is it so frumpy even by normal standards, theres often the argument that the clothes are more expensive due to more fabric, but will make extremely frumpy options with lots if fabric Confused

in the summer range, i know lots of plus size people inc me are self conscious but what about being able to show off a good cleavage? or apple shaped women who often have slimmer legs they would like to show off, its all cold shoulders or smocks with butterflies. AIBU?

Some of the non-frumpy brands with larger sizes are not that great. I like clothes designed for larger sizes, not clothes designed for small sizes but made larger.

Twizbe · 10/06/2021 09:54

Have a look at Jess on the plus size on Instagram. She's just launched her first collection with in the style (in the style x Jess Millichamp)

I'm a bit biased as she's my friends sister in law but I think her clothes are really nice. There are a few bits that I'd like but won't fit me.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 10/06/2021 09:56

I think its the places you're looking rather than a case of all plus sizes clothes being frumpy. Im a big fan of ASOS!

June2021 · 10/06/2021 09:59

I think more and more shops are dong bigger sizes now since we are all much bigger. So lots of choice.

I just find that I don't look good in pretty much anything since I put on lots of weight. Not that I have done anything about it so my own fault. It's difficult to see what things might look like on a size 16 when the model is a size 8. I prefer when clothing is shown on a plus size model

aintnothinbutagstring · 10/06/2021 10:00

Everlane is good especially for jeans and trousers (they do all sizes from xxs to XXL), they're shipped from the US and not the cheapest, but it is good quality stuff.

aintnothinbutagstring · 10/06/2021 10:02

For the jeans, if you measure yourself accurately and follow the Everlane size guide, you'll get a really good fit, the cheeky jeans are amazing. Lots of plus sized models on the website.

ILoveShula · 10/06/2021 10:02

I'm not any bigger.

Buy clothes you like in your size and wear them with confidence. Not many are size 8 models, and not many are plus size models either. Judge it on how it looks on you.

vestastilly · 10/06/2021 10:08

I buy a lot from Next now as some styles they do in a size 26. Also a few bits from simply be and yours. I find yours clothes generally too long for me though. I have not shopped in Evans for years.
Have recently had a session with an image consultant Francesca Cairns which I would totally recommend. She has opened my eyes to styles which suit me and in which colours. There is also a handy ‘shop for me’ service which For £10 she will send you an outfit to suit you and buy online. It has changed my plus sized fashion world!

I’m still using Dorothy Perkins as you can still buy online and they have a good size range.

Whyhello · 10/06/2021 10:20

I think you’re looking in the wrong places. I’ve never shopped at either of those shops because I know for a fact Evans is frumpy and old fashioned. I wear a 16 atm but have been a 20 in the past and I mostly get my clothes from ASOS which the odd thing from Lucy & Yak.

CallMeCleo · 10/06/2021 10:23

I'm a big plus size. I saw a lovely top on Amazon which went up to 2XL. I clicked on "size chart" to make sure that 2XL would accommodate me, and was floored by what I saw!

XS = 4
S = 6
M = 8
L = 10
XL = 12
XXL = 14

I actually burst out laughing at the notion that size 12 is considered "extra large"!

Many of the models on sites like Yours don't look fat at all so the shopper does not get any idea of what the garment will look like on them. Down the bottom of the page it usually says something like "model is 5ft 11 and size 14". Yeah but I am 5ft 1!

Lemonwoe · 10/06/2021 10:23

I’m a size 16-18 and although my weight has went up and down over the years, it tends to be my default size. In my early 20s it was horrendous trying to find anything that fitted me in most shops, but today it’s a lot easier as many shops do normal clothes up to size 20. But I agree, a lot of the plus size shops have the most hideous clothes: it’s as though they were designed around 60 year old elephants

SmallPrawnEnergy · 10/06/2021 10:29

There’s a girl on tiktok who does a funny “pyjamas or plus size” game. Some clothing choices for plus size are just hideous. Why do they think all fat women love butterflies?

It’s funny I checked out some brands that some people have listed (cos being one) and despite being out of my price range and they go to size 44 which is a U.K. 16. That’s not plus size or inclusive. One had 3 dresses in a size 50 which would be uk22.

JewelGarden · 10/06/2021 10:29

Oh god I hate cold shoulder tops, smocks especially with butterflies, hanky hemlines, dipped hemlines etc! I want to dress like everyone else my age, in jeans and a Breton top lol. Sainsbury's are quite good for this but the sizing can be weird. Even plus size manufacturers can't get the length of t shirts right though, they could be the biggest size you can buy and they'd still be around my belly button, this does not look good when you have a flabby tummy!

I like Popsy, the fabrics are often a bit twee but the shapes are genuinely flattering when you find the one for you.

MayIDestroyYou · 10/06/2021 10:30

I often find myself recommending Marina Rinaldi here. They go from size 8 to 28 and there's always something non-frumpy.

But most people don't want to spend what they ask.

CallMeCleo · 10/06/2021 10:34

Re NON dowdy clothing:

I've found that the best plus size clothes don't come from Yours or anything like that. There are a few sellers on ebay that are for plus sized ladies and they sell things made in India and Thailand, such as kaftans and kaftan blouses, and embroidered rayon tops and skirts.

Ulla Popken clothing is very well made and strong and goes right up to a dress size 40.

I love wearing bright clothing and jazzy patterns, plus I want things to fit me exactly, sick of having to "put up" with items that are not quite right, so I now employ a local dressmaker, who charges £8 an hour.

I browse the fabric shops online and choose my fabric, then I draw out roughly what style I want. We've found three styles that suit my shape perfectly - a shirt, a blouse and a dress, and now just repeat those designs with new fabrics I buy.

A new garment usually costs me about £20 - £30 for the fabric and £16 to £24 for the labour. It's SO worth it, and all my clothes now have pockets -- hurrah! I don't think I will ever buy off the peg again.

I just looked --- £170 for a tee shirt? They are having a fucking laugh!

Ulla's tees are between £14 and £22 and superb quality - I have about 8 from there.

At nearly £300 for this, I can see why...

I have a theory on the butterflies thing. I think it's a combination of plus size women being seen as less feminine (which is utter bollocks) and therefore need something OTT girlie on our clothes, and also that butterflies are dainty fluttery things so by putting them in our clothes it's meant to impart some of those dainty fluttery qualities on us. Either way, it's all a load of crap.
AudacityBaby · 10/06/2021 10:59

Oh this thread is singing the song of my people!

I'm a big fan of Lazy Oaf but they're very, very variable - lots of Gen Z stuff that makes no sense to me (ASOS Curve much the same). Other than that I like Harkel and Joanie.

PasstheBucket89 · 10/06/2021 11:05

Yours had some lovely tops, summery dresses im surprised this year it seems to be much less choice online.

im a big plus size, im pear shaped so all the skinny jeans are frustrating! i need boot cut, wide leg.

@medusasbadhairday I think its because they dont really know what to do. So the conversation is something like 'aaaaaaaah, wtf do we put on this top? Aaaaahhh we need to make a decision. Fuck it. Butterflies? Yeah ok'

Ha yeah, probably with an element of "no need to make more of an effort, not like they have a lot of other options".

Thank god more brands are starting to offer decent plus size options

MayIDestroyYou · 10/06/2021 11:13

Grin I guess everyone's different! All I see is the flawless finishing at the neck and armholes, and the fact that it looks as if it's at least partly double-faced. It's not a brand I look at often - I've bought the odd thing for other people and know the quality is / was excellent, which is why I recommend them. But, now that you've brought it to my attention, I rather like the simplicity of that particular dress.

But obviously, their price range will only seem acceptable to people who generally spend this sort of money on clothes. (Whatever their size.) I'm not suggesting someone with a supermarket or M&S budget should suddenly switch their allegiance.

MeowPurrGrr · 10/06/2021 11:23

Evans is the worst for the most unflattering plus sized clothes! I honestly don’t think their styles would suit anyone and what’s with all the sodding butterflies!!

I find Yours has improved a lot and can find some decent stuff these days. Generally plus sized clothing has come a long way over the last 10 years and when you know where to shop you can get some lovely flattering items.

Here’s my go to places that all do curve ranges (up to 28/30 possibly higher);

New Look curve
ASOS
Boohoo
Simply Be
Yours
Joules (they go up to 26/28 in a lot of styles)
Sea salt
Joanie
River Island
Next
Curvissa
Dorothy Perkins
H&M
Shein
Miss Guided
Pretty Little Thing
Pink Clove
Marks and Spencer’s
Tu at Sainsbury’s
George at Asda

Just a few off the top of my head and looking at phones shopping folder!
