To want a black and rose gold pram for our baby boy

I'm 6 months pregnant and we've decided on getting the Egg2 travel system for our baby boy. I've fallen in love with the black diamond and rose gold edition:

www.johnlewis.com/egg2-special-edition-stroller-luxury-travel-system-bundle-diamond-black/p5399692

I know it's on the girlier side but I think it's absolutely stunning and don't see what the big deal is about not getting such a pram for a baby boy. It's not like I've chosen a pink pram! Dh is completely against it but I know ultimately he'll succumb to my charms 😅 He is worried about what everyone else will think and say though. Family that I have shown think it's mad to get this pram for a boy due to the rose gold and glittery fabric. Is it really that mad??

My 2nd choice and Dh's 1st choice of colour is the Jurassic grey:

I know rose gold is not to everyone's taste but I personally love it and the pram make me swoon! It's on the pricier side so I don't want us to make the wrong decision.

I don't think the colour is an issue.

£1500 is a lot of money for a pram! It's nice to pick lovely things for your first baby, just remember they will get covered in food/mud/nappy leaks. I got an expensive pram second hand, I'm glad I did as it's covered in mud, food and anything else the kids drop on it. I loved it (Bugaboo Cameleon), lovely to push and will last pretty much forever, but not worth £800/900 new at the time.

georgarina · 09/06/2021 13:37

I got a navy pram for my first (boy) - wasn't my first choice of colour, I wanted grey but it was sold out. I'm reusing it for DD. Never thought about colour influencing whether people think it's a boy or girl, unless it's totally sparkling and Barbie branded or something.

Blossomtoes · 09/06/2021 13:49

@Cobb121

My friend has the camouflage egg for her baby girl and nobody has said anything
Perhaps nobody can see it!
Curiosity101 · 09/06/2021 13:51

@Taybz In your position I'd get the grey. It's your second choice and DHs first. Overall I think everyone ends up happier with that than with the other one.

If it wasn't for you saying your DH disliked it I'd say go for your favourite as the baby won't care. But whether you feel the same way as your DH does or not, if it makes your DH uncomfortable... then surely it makes sense to make the choice that makes you both happy.

My DC pram has never been 'covered' in food or crap Confused

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 09/06/2021 13:55

I don't normally click on these threads but I had to see the pram you're talking about.

I prefer your husband's choice actually; it's not the rose-gold that doesn't appeal (I love that colour myself), it's the black 'peaked' fashioning of the hood. It's been nagging at it what it reminds me of and it's 'The Munsters' car. Sorry! Shock

Your baby won't mind though, you're the one giving birth, it's an expensive item so get the one that is your heart's desire. Grin

@Taybz I have this pram and used it for my dd, will be using it for any future babies! It’s not too shiney and glittery, actually really subtle and no chips marks on the chassis. Enjoy it 🤩

I much prefer the grey one

The rose gold one looks gaudy IMO but each to their own

Most people will assume it’s a girl inside the rose gold pram which, whilst it’s their problem, will probably become tiresome explaining

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 09/06/2021 14:17

Original poster it appears that you have already answered your own question and fully understand the concept of likely third party views and reactions. However as you mentioned in your initial post you don’t “care” what others think so I guess you don’t need validation from a bunch of mums on MumsNet. As a mum I would tend to personally go for more gender neutral options as more practical for us as a family keeping options open in case of future sibling use etc but that’s just my viewpoint as it seems you have decided your choice already. You know that a new born boy in girls colours may receive inadvertent incorrect gender related comments as all of us will be default assume the obvious with pink. Enjoy your baby and beautiful pink buggy!

Peach01 · 09/06/2021 14:22

Neither has mine. Other than the wheels it's never got dirty. The snacks we take doesn't cause spillages etc and that's not for the benefit of the pram. Practical.

MN is weird about prams. It comes up every time. For some reason splashing on a pram is frowned upon
If ever there was a reason to be upset 😂 people seem to take it personally, especially since it was never a factor in OPs decision.

I suspect it is because mumsnet by definition has a high percentage of people posting who have recently gone through the baby years and probably wish they had spent the money on something a bit more useful instead
I haven't found this. The pram was the most important investment and we've had more than our moneys worth. It's been used every day since DC was born. I had intended on getting another pram but once I pushed this one it was game over for all others. Felt so much safer, huge basket. It's in great condition although it's in constant use. I don't intend on selling mine but I will donate it, resale value wasn't a factor.

Airyfairymarybeary · 09/06/2021 14:27

No you absolutely cannot get that for a boy, his penis will definitely fall off!

Seriously, colours are colours! Is this your first child by any chance?

Lovethewinter · 09/06/2021 14:27

I actually think the grey one looks much nicer. I would also say that it might be nice to compromise with your DH too - you both like the model and you both like the second colour option (even if you like the first one more) so that seems like the one to go with! And as other pp have said, the colour might go out of fashion on the rose gold one which might also be harder to sell on if you do in the future.

wingsandstrings · 09/06/2021 14:40

personally I can't decide which pram looks nicer because I'm distracted by how they're both so absurdly over-priced. If it were me I'd either spend my time feeling stressed about keeping it 'nice' or I'd have a stained, sticky pram within months. My experience from ante-natal groups was that these high end prams didn't have any better level of functionality or comfort than the mid-range prams. I do remember a couple of fellow mums laughing behind the back of another mum who was struggling to undo her vastly expensive pram and put it in her car boot, and the two other mums were like 'look at her with her expensive pram that she can't even work' . . .. I thought that was rather mean (particularly as I was rather prone to not being able to work anything pram related, especially rain covers, but I digress) but it is an example of the slight eye-rolling and inverse snobbery that exists - in my area anyway - about big very expensive prams. On the subject of whether to get a rose gold trim for a boy though, why not, if it's a colour that gives you pleasure. It's not like he'll have an opinion on it!

FlutterByMsButterFly · 09/06/2021 14:41

That was my number 1 option too OP- for my little boy. The colour is gorgeous and it is a unisex pram. Went for the shadow black option though as I was looking to sell mine off after a couple of years. The black and rose gold does not age well imo (going by those I have seen out and about). Ultimately though, if you love it, go for it.. your DH will probably not be bothered in the end once he's out and about with your little one🙂

Peach01 · 09/06/2021 14:41

I had a look at the grey. It's gorgeous. That being said, I'm not a fan of black/dark prams. The tone of the grey is beautiful.

Agree - we got a lovely 2nd hand pram/buggy that has lasted amazingly well.

Personally I think the rose gold one will look tacky pretty quickly, but it makes no difference whether it's for a boy or a girl.

4bluebabies · 09/06/2021 14:44

You won’t use half of that for very long at all to justify that price tag and you’ll get fed up of pushing it around and manhandling it in and out of a car when it’s so much easier to deal with a small collapsible buggy once baby is sitting upright

lazylinguist · 09/06/2021 14:46

My dh wouldn't have given a monkey's what colour our pram was. He was very much interested in the children and not remotely interested in the baby accoutrements! Besides which... we had two children of different sexes and it wouldn't have occurred to me not to use the same pram again for the second. Neither of us would have dreamt of spending such a ridiculous sum on a pram though. Shock

Peach01 · 09/06/2021 14:53

What?! This kind of petty, bitter behavior says more about them than it does the woman. I'm sure life runs smoothly for them daily. I'm guessing they didn't offer to help her?

iduno · 09/06/2021 15:11

I don't think it's girly so it will be fine. Not that baby knows any different 😂

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 09/06/2021 15:11

i suspect it is because mumsnet by definition has a high percentage of people posting who have recently gone through the baby years and probably wish they had spent the money on something a bit more useful instead

I think it’s because the majority on mumsnet seem to drive everywhere. I always see “just get a cheap umbrella stroller” - which are absolutely crap to push for any distance, less comfortable for the parent and the child. If you’re just getting a pram to push round a shopping centre you’ve driven to and will drive back home from then sure. But if you walk a lot you need something more substantial. Obviously second hand is a good option here but things like Bugaboo are better to push if you do any distance. My pram was a tank, I could fit 3 stuffed full bags for life of grocery shopping in the bottom section and DC would nap for hours in it. Loved it.

TuvoknotSpock · 09/06/2021 15:13

Tbh I find the black and grey covers a bit boring (although I like the chasis colour). Will DH ever push the pram in his own? I would get what makes you happy as being a mum you tend to put that into last place.

Have you tried it in tandem mode? I have a 2nd hand Peach in tandem mode and would recommend to anyone buying new to go for the uppababy Vista as the gap between the seats is bigger which makes quite a difference imo.

Also would Have no idea that particular colourway was 500 quid more than the normal covers

miltonj · 09/06/2021 15:26

Wow that's an expensive pram.

There's no reason a boy shouldn't have it though and I wouldn't assume girl by looking at it. Your family are over thinking it.

Twizbe · 09/06/2021 15:38

My daughter had a navy blue pram. Never mattered at all.

I got 1 boy comment, but tbf she was wearing a blue cardigan as well.
