To say that I have finally experienced the dreaded arse daggers?!

You tried to warn me, MN, but in all my nearly 40 years, I have never felt anything like it. To quote Supt. Hastings "Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey!"

Was trying to supervise 20 children and thought I would scream or fall down and actually writhe on the floor. I did feel like I was being stabbed, so at least the name is right.

Honestly, I almost asked a coworker to cover for me, but I thought she would laugh if I said I was dying and my bum hurt.

Then, 10 of the longest minutes of my life later and they just stopped. What the hell?! Will they come back every time I have a period? Why now at almost 40?

I have so many questions and the internet is not helping.

Give me your worst arse dagger stories...

OMG I thought this was just me. I had no idea this was a thing. Very occasionally get it and only when I have my period. Literally takes my breath away. You don't know if you are going to vomit or pass out or both. The pain is unbelievable.

Mylifesadrama · 09/06/2021 18:12

Oh god I feel for you! Every now and again my rectum goes into spasm! To say it is agonising is an understatement!
The first time It happened I collapsed and had to get my friend round. She took me to hospital with my pleas that I really had not had anal or stuck anything up my arse! 😳🤣.

The best thing for me, which I take at the first hint of pain is buscopan. It starts working almost immediately, and so far so good has been able to stop the daggers in their tracks!

looptheloopinahulahoop · 09/06/2021 18:13

Poor you OP, it is the nastiest thing ever.

WorkHardPlayHard1 · 09/06/2021 18:21

Wow thought me & my cousin were the only ones who got this!?!

Its a stabbing sensation like a knitting needle going up my bum when I ovulate. I kind of think its when the egg is released/pushed out?

I notice it most months Hmm

PearlclutchersInc · 09/06/2021 18:28

@yespresh I already take omeprazole and makes no difference whatsoever.

I thought it was haemorroids to the extent that I complained and got a colonoscopy - which found zero, nothing, nada. I just wanted to cry as I've been so miserable for the last couple of years (thank fuck for covid and wfh).

Alleycat1 · 09/06/2021 18:29

I have suffered from arse cramps/daggers/javelin all my life, 70 years. Sometimes it lasts for 15 mins +. My father also had it but it has passed my mother and sister by. I take Omeprazole every day for hiatus hernia. It has no effect whatsoever on arse daggers. Just one of those things and when in company I pretend it is cramp in my thigh.

Namechangednotatroll · 09/06/2021 18:34

Proctalgia fugax is anal pain that doesn't have a specific cause. This pain is usually caused by intense muscle spasms in or around the canal of the anus. It's similar to another type of anal pain called levator ani syndrome. The pain is slightly different in levator ani syndrome, and may last days instead of minutes.

Bravesoul · 09/06/2021 18:50

I have only had this post menopause and had never heard of it before so spoke with my GP who sent me for a scan and everything was normal. I assume it comes sometimes is when I would have a period if I was ovulating but do not but given that there is not consistency on here may be it comes with some sort of hormonal happening?

amusedbush · 09/06/2021 18:56

It happens to me at ovulation. It doesn't happen often but every time it does, I feel like I'm dying.

Last time it woke me up around 2am and all I could do was grip the edge of the mattress until it passed. I was sweating and couldn't breathe or move - it felt like it would never end.

TheRedShoes75 · 09/06/2021 19:08

I get javelin arse every month now I’m peri. Usually at night and usually lasts for about 30 minutes. During which time I generally pray for a speedy death.

Moonface123 · 09/06/2021 19:12

I have only ever suffered this a couple of times but it was so painful l felt almost faint. One time it happened on the self service checkouts and a customer was engaging in a long and drawn out conversation, l could hardly stand.
I agree with others, as soon as l sat on the toilet, it eased up. It's absolute agony.

Middersweekly · 09/06/2021 19:14

Oh this is the worst OP. Lightening like daggers up both the front and back bum pre period to around day 4! Javelin in the lower abdomen/hip area during ovulation too! It’s crap!

Stockholmvillage · 09/06/2021 19:18

Has anyone mentioned endometriosis? I have it everywhere and in my rectum, pouch if Douglas and vagina.
During ovulation and my period it feels like someone has stuck a sharp knife up my bum, my sides and vagina. I can't sit down and sometimes faint.

Couchbettato · 09/06/2021 19:23

I used to get arse daggers all the time until I had my hemmorhoidectomy.

They definitely started in pregnancy for me.

So I do believe they're a symptom of piles.

Deadringer · 09/06/2021 19:36

I get it now and again, usually at night. It is a gripping, pulsing sort of pain that can go on for up to 30 mins, though it waxs and wanes a little. I am post menopause and don't think i ever got it on my period. I got javelin arse only once so far, a sudden, agonising dart of pain that is gone almost as soon as it begins. Thank goodness!

expatinspain · 09/06/2021 19:37

I get this. It's usually around 3am when it happens.. The worst episode lasted around 45 mins. It's completely unrelated to my period though. I normally get this when I've been overindulging for a period of time.

expatinspain · 09/06/2021 19:42

The other is the horrendous spasm that builds slowly and has people writing in agony for longer periods of time, often 20-30 mins. It is intense and unrelenting and often strikes at night. Exactly like others have said, if you tense up against it, its grip gets worse and you just have to sort of wait it out (whilst panting and cursing god) until it decides to fuck off again. Strikes are seemingly random and can be months

BlackAlys · 09/06/2021 19:44

@Yespresh

Try taking Omeprazole, dont think you need a prescription for it
That's a PPI - suppresses acid production. How would that help?

This is a very good description
winnieanddaisy · 09/06/2021 19:47

I suffered with this during my periods and put it down to endometriosis. It stopped when I had a hysterectomy .

Ohjustboreoff · 09/06/2021 20:44

Cramping bum holes and Period Poos are caused by hormones. The same hormones that shed your uterus endometrial cells let out a hormone called PROSTAGLANDINS! Prostaglandins cause inflammation and contractions. So it contracts the uterus and the anus. Lovely!
So cramping of your uterus, cramping of your bum hole! The causes your stabby bum and also loosens your bowel for the lovely period poos!!! Don't ya just luv being a woman!

Fluffmum · 09/06/2021 20:45

Ibuprofen and a gin to numb the stabbing

Mine aren't related to my cycle at all. Proctalgia Fugax strikes at men as well.

Never experienced arse daggers but I do get a massive sharp pain in what I assume is a fallopian tube. After my period, every month for about 3 days. Its not unbearable but it hurts. It feels like a burning. Always in the same place on the left. I wonder if its a similar thing? I'm nearly 40 and it only been happening for the last 6 to 12 months

Geamhradh · 09/06/2021 21:18

More men than women are affected, my doctor said. Nobody knows what causes it or why it hits generally at night.
