To say that I have finally experienced the dreaded arse daggers?!

You tried to warn me, MN, but in all my nearly 40 years, I have never felt anything like it. To quote Supt. Hastings "Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey!"

Was trying to supervise 20 children and thought I would scream or fall down and actually writhe on the floor. I did feel like I was being stabbed, so at least the name is right.

Honestly, I almost asked a coworker to cover for me, but I thought she would laugh if I said I was dying and my bum hurt.

Then, 10 of the longest minutes of my life later and they just stopped. What the hell?! Will they come back every time I have a period? Why now at almost 40?

I have so many questions and the internet is not helping.

Give me your worst arse dagger stories...

Another sufferer here! Post menopausal but had very bad endometriosis back in the day. I usually use co codamol as soon as the pain starts - which like others is usually at night and totally unpredictable but first thing tomorrow am going to buy some Buscopan so thanks for the tip!

Tallulah1972 · 09/06/2021 21:53

Ooh they’re nasty, evil, stabby, stabby pains! Not had them for a while but they take your breath away! So bloody painful!

Ouenta · 09/06/2021 22:19

My cure to this dreaded curse (it does work, I promise)... Lean forward and stick your bum up, then punch your arse hole, hard, a few times. It stops the spasm! Honestly, this works. Painkillers, trying to poo, down dog yoga....tried them all, with no relief. The punch works! 💪

LoveCherryTree · 09/06/2021 22:29

I thought it was wind??

Cotton55 · 09/06/2021 23:40

Some of these posts are hilarious!!
I always called it pain in the hole! What helps me is sitting on the ground with my knees bent up and sort of rocking back and forth on my bum. Sometimes I sit on the loo too and bear down as if I'm doing a poo

jeaux90 · 09/06/2021 23:51

@Cotton55 I came here to say that exact same thing. Rolling forward and back with your knees curled up to your chest works really well making sure you roll onto your bum to sitting up position each time (also having a wee helps)

I call it sphincter cramp Grin

41 years old and I've never heard of arse daggers until this thread! I started reading this yesterday, mouth agape very much like this emoji Shock

🤣🤣🤣 punch ur arsehole oh my days
MrsGrumpyKnickers · 10/06/2021 07:57

I could cry reading these posts. I’ve had this for about 12 years or so and thought it was just me. The pain is excruciating, usually at night, but fleeting enough (and with no other symptoms) to warrant a trip to the docs.

greenritta · 10/06/2021 08:28

Omg. I have it sometimes after I climax (and then let me tell you after that I am wary if my body's de l display of pleasure)

SteffieIUI · 10/06/2021 08:35

Oooo I can't believe how many of us there are!!
I have his every month without fail during my period for 1-2 days. Needing a poo and doing a poo is absolutely agony. The gynaecologist was convinced it was a sign of endometriosis and I even had a hysteroscopy (keyhole camera inside) but no endo was found.
Now just put it down to the hormones that cause the uterus and anus contractions and take pain relief. Will definitely try buscopan though!

Ifbutandmaybe · 10/06/2021 08:38

Omg I never realised so many people got it to me it feels like someone has literally kicked me up the backside , I tend to get it at night, so painful , as if we don't have enough to deal with periods and menopause etc

Menora · 10/06/2021 08:51

I haven’t had this for a little while, I’m menopausal now though

loopylindi · 10/06/2021 11:31

it's not just a female thing. My husband has had this and his solution is to perch on the side of the bath, bum hanging over......and wait a while. it does seem to reduce the pain.

JonSnowIsALoser · 10/06/2021 11:45

It is due to a pelvic floor and / or anal muscle spasm, which happens randomly and without warning, stress being one of the underlying causes. Scary stuff.

A question to those of you who have experienced it - as it's to do with a pelvic muscle spasm, does doing regular Kegel exercises help prevent it, or it has no effect whatsoever? Any other remedies you tried?

doodledee · 10/06/2021 12:17

Oh it's good to read these posts, I though I was the only one who suffered with this! So nice to know I'm not alone....first had it about 5 years ago in a supermarket - had to retreat to car pain was so intense. Now it generally comes at night (waking me up) lasts up to 30 mins but not sharp stabbing pain its a dull intense deep ache, like the crescendo of a contraction that doesn't subside. Downward dog position helps a bit but usually have to ride it out. No triggers for me

Birdcloud · 10/06/2021 12:28

Sounds like a check up at the docs is called for. Internal piles?

Br1256 · 10/06/2021 16:46

Just as spasms of neck muscles cause headaches, spasms of the pelvic muscles causes proctalgia. Proctalgia is pain due to a spasm of the pelvic floor muscles, the muscles of the anal sphincter, or the muscles of the rectum. This causes severe stabbing pain like a knife sticking into the rectum.

AliceAbsolum · 10/06/2021 17:28

How do stretch your arse then if it's cramp? Grin

DLLx · 10/06/2021 17:37

First labour was completely this - I couldn’t relax in any contraction and didn’t progress until finally had epidural. I couldn’t explain where the pain was (and I’m a doctor…!) Only fairly recently realised that lots of people get this, which is reassuring. One of the powers of MN I think - sharing anonymously Smile
Pleased to say 2nd and 3rd labours were more what I was expecting- abdo pain, so there is hope. I also don’t get so much with periods as I used to. Recommend mirena if very badly affected.

frankiefirstyear · 10/06/2021 18:56

@Queenoftheashes

I think I’ve had this. I remember once getting it when I was about 13 and writhing in pain in my Garden. I thought I would explode. It’s given me a fear of labour. Also only happens rarely for me.
It gave me fear of labour too but honestly, for me labour wasn't as painful! Maybe because of gas and air and pre-warning 🤷‍♀️
startrek90 · 10/06/2021 19:11

I thought it was just me! I started to have these things after the birth of my 2nd child and its awful. I thought I was imagining it and didn't want to bother the Dr with it. I now have a name for it, it's such a weird thing and utterly paralysing when it happens.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 13/06/2021 23:49

@user1472151176

Never experienced arse daggers but I do get a massive sharp pain in what I assume is a fallopian tube. After my period, every month for about 3 days. Its not unbearable but it hurts. It feels like a burning. Always in the same place on the left. I wonder if its a similar thing? I'm nearly 40 and it only been happening for the last 6 to 12 months

That sounds more like diverticulitis to me than fallopian tube pain

Workinghardeveryday · 14/06/2021 08:57

@Sugarplumfairy65 I get this too!! Same time same place! What is it? Dull burning for a couple of days on and off, worse some months than others
