AIBU to ask if you wear a dress without even thinking about it?

Let me explain.

I'm a very casual dresser. You'll find me in joggers, jeans and Hush harem pants, with a t shirt or sweatshirt, weather dependent. And I stick to this uniform all year round

I don't own a single dress - well, I didn't until yesterday. When on a whim I bought 3. And I've put one on today and I keep inwardly thinking ' OH MY GOD! I'm wearing a dress!' as it feels so alien to me to do so. Like I should be going to a bloody garden party or something - and this is just a jersey midi dress with nicely covering short sleeves and goes well with trainers etc

So .. what do you wear day to day if you're not leaving the house? Would you even consider putting a dress on?

Should add, I'm tall and hourglass (even at a size 18) so dresses always hang nicely as long as they have a waist/belt. Length can be an issue as maxi never are floor length, but I can live with that, whereas trousers and jeans being too short just looks awful and high waisted things rarely actually hit my natural waistline.
Dresses are the answer. Have just ordered some with pockets, then I will be fulfilled!

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 06/06/2021 14:00

Also, I WANT to wear dresses all of the time and just have one pair of jeans as a “back up” but then I discovered ‘mom’ jeans and its love

ChaToilLeam · 06/06/2021 14:01

I’m very short and hourglass shaped, and live in dresses. If your weight fluctuates, they are so much more forgiving than trousers, and always look put together. Opaques or leggings + boots in winter, Snag chub rub shorts and bare legs plus sandals or sneakers in summer. I have everything from light cotton dresses to cocktail frocks to heavier velour dresses for winter and smart wool ones for work.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 06/06/2021 14:01

Agree with OP though that the first few days of dress wearing I did feel like I was going to a party. DH was also confused as I spent the last 18 months in pyjamas and joggers when not at work (uniform).

AnxiousAlpaca · 06/06/2021 14:02

I have the short leg issue too. (I am yet to meet someone with shorter legs than me) So I often buy ankle grazer jeans and then they fit like a normal pair should. I’m usually one for skinny jeans though I’m trying in the ‘in-thing’ with the mom jean but they make my legs look super short. Sad

DuckonaBike · 06/06/2021 14:03

I love dresses, and wear them all the time. Today I’m wear a navy and white striped cotton one from Jigsaw with gold trainers Smile

When I was young, I think dresses were more of a “smart” thing and were usually worn with tights and posh shoes. Now it’s become acceptable to wear them with trainers / hiking sandals / ankle boots etc it’s easier to be casual in a dress.

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 06/06/2021 14:03

I wear dresses all the time - it's my default because it's easy. My work is full on and I don't have to spend time co-ordinating separates. In the pandemic I bought my first pair of trousers 😂

StCharlotte · 06/06/2021 14:05

@NotMeNoNo

I want to see some of these everyday dresses. I can't get away from the dressed up feeling either. I can just about manage winter with opaque tights but summer is impossible. Pasty legs, no. Below knees, no (proportions wrong). Leggings, no. I'm stuck.
I've recently bought a couple of the Tallahassee dresses from Weird Fish. Really comfortable and have worn at the office and on a casual day out. I'm a bit evangelical about them at the moment and have been recommending them left, right and centre on here lately Grin

OP I have loads of dresses. So easy.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 06/06/2021 14:05

I only wear dresses. I don't own any jeans or trousers. I have yoga leggings and a couple of t-shirts to work out in, a couple of cardigans for when it's cold, that's it, everything else is a dress. No separates, no co-ordinating other than jewellery if I feel like it. It is a lazy person's way of dressing!

ImInStealthMode · 06/06/2021 14:08

I'm currently wearing a maxi length t-shirt dress from ASOS just around the house. It's just as comfy for lounging about, if not more, than any lounge pants / joggers.

Unfortunately it's become such a 'lounge' dress I'm not sure I'd wear it outside now, unless as a cover up at the end of a beach day or something.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 06/06/2021 14:09

I am currently wearing the Tallahassee dress, with Snag tights shorts underneath. It’s like wearing a long tshirt, so comfortable

IntoAir · 06/06/2021 14:10

Yes. Often much more comfortable than trousers. And you can put a dress on and not have to worry about tucking in your shirt or whatever.

Passionfruitpizza · 06/06/2021 14:10

Mostly leggings, harems or jeggings. Comfort and practicality above everything.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 06/06/2021 14:13

I wear dresses often if I’m leaving the house and it’s summer. If not leaving the house and nobody is going to see me, then it’s T-shirt and skirt or joggers = less ironing,

Penchantforfloralpatterns · 06/06/2021 14:15

At every opportunity, I love a frock! I’ve got lounging about the house dresses, day dresses, fancy dresses. I love joe browns for summery and casual dresses.

Luxplus · 06/06/2021 14:18

I only wear dresses Blush dont own any pair of jeans Confused I have always loved dresses. I have a mix range of dresses suiting the seasons and occasions...

SallyCinnabon · 06/06/2021 14:22

A lot of women worrying about ‘pasty’ legs…. there’s plenty of reasons I’m don’t wear dresses/skirts often but this isn’t one of them.

Own your skin ladies, put two fingers up to the beauty industry who want you to feel self conscious and buy tanners!!

Definitely. I wear dresses whether I’m tanned or not. I don’t owe the feminine ‘ideal’ to anyone. Fuck that shit.
KarensGobbyChops · 06/06/2021 14:23

Got these two recently for casual hot days and they didn't break the bank.

I live in dresses, most days I wear maxi dresses, most comfy thing in the world!

Killahangilion · 06/06/2021 14:24

You’re much braver than me OP! Enjoy your posh frocks.

I can’t stand dresses or skirts and grudgingly wore a very simple and flowery summer frock to get married in. Definitely Not a white meringue!

Even when I was a size 8, you wouldn’t get me in a dress as I have big calves and wide ankles. I also have size 8 feet but I’m only 5ft 3 tall. I only ever wear long trousers, no shorts either. When I was at school I was teased for having ‘footballers legs’.

Dresses look fab on everyone else but I’d look like a sack of spuds if I wore one.

murbblurb · 06/06/2021 14:26

Never as they aren't practical for me - I get sweaty so the top needs washing after each wear, so a dress doesn't work.

Can't remember when I last wore a skirt - as low heeled shoes have apparently been outlawed, probably never again.

@Ninkanink I used to wear tanner all the time not because I hated my skin, it had been entrained in me that pale skin (especially legs) is bad. Took me a while but last few years I’ve been fake tan free and it’s actually quite empowering BlushSmile

GertietheGherkin · 06/06/2021 14:27

I usually avoid dresses if I haven't shaved my legs. Grin
