Let me explain.

I'm a very casual dresser. You'll find me in joggers, jeans and Hush harem pants, with a t shirt or sweatshirt, weather dependent. And I stick to this uniform all year round

I don't own a single dress - well, I didn't until yesterday. When on a whim I bought 3. And I've put one on today and I keep inwardly thinking ' OH MY GOD! I'm wearing a dress!' as it feels so alien to me to do so. Like I should be going to a bloody garden party or something - and this is just a jersey midi dress with nicely covering short sleeves and goes well with trainers etc

So .. what do you wear day to day if you're not leaving the house? Would you even consider putting a dress on?

Yes, I feel exactly like this too OP! After years of wearing jeans and casual wear I’ve also stared buying dresses - I used to wear them all the time when I was younger though.

For the first time in 15 years I’ll be working (in an office) this summer and would like to wear dresses but worry I’ll feel overdressed too. It’s very odd.

@theshadeofgreen

I want to love dresses but I hate my thoughts rubbing together. I'm a 12/14 and walking anywhere in a dress leaves me with sore thighs. Fine if I Chuck Spanx on underneath but kind of defeats the object of an airy dress when it's boiling
M&S do a very light control version of spanx, nice thin material, barely worth the bother for the control, but perfect for this issue.
AnnaMagnani · 06/06/2021 12:52

I wear dresses all the time as they are my work 'uniform'. I buy cotton ones from Thought.

I like them as they are comfortable, have pockets and I only have to make one decision - pick dress and I'm done.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/06/2021 12:53

I feel like I need shares but honestly, Snags Chub Rubs solve the problem. They are quite cooling and very very comfortable.

Lj8893 · 06/06/2021 12:53

I wear dresses all the time. In winter I wear pinafore style dresses mainly with thick tights and in summer I wear midi and maxi dresses with sandals or trainers.

I own one pair of jeans which are too big for me so I rarely wear them. 1 pair of shorts ( a recent purchase) and 1 pair of tailored jogger style trousers (a recent purchase).
I do own loads of leggings though for just lounging round the house or with wellies when we go for muddy walks!

But I’m mainly in either sportwear or a dress.
(I’m a size 16 apple shape)

Aneley · 06/06/2021 12:54

I love dresses. All year long I wear either dresses or flowy trousers - its obscene how many of those I amassed over the years.

Thank you for introducing me to this company! Ive just looked and love their stuff
shouldistop · 06/06/2021 12:54

@theshadeofgreen sloggi do shorts that are just cotton so lightweight. Think they're called long line briefs. I wear them if my legs are likely to be sweaty or am wearing a short dress.

givewillowabreak · 06/06/2021 12:54

I always wear dresses, I think from pure laziness. I don't need to iron a too and bottoms then! I was always a girly girl when I was little, but my mum preferred me in more practical clothes - I grew up on a farm, so maybe that's why I chose dresses now. Because I can!

Thelnebriati · 06/06/2021 12:55

I can't wear dresses at all as my top half is a completely different clothing size and shape from my bottom half. I have 'swimmers shoulders' but I'm also very flat chested. My bottom half is curvy.
I can get away with a skirt and a loose shirt.

TableNiner · 06/06/2021 12:56

Ha this thread should be in the S&B board, long thread there already re the dress/trainer/denim jacket combo.

I don’t wear dresses. I feel the cold and always have more clothes on than everyone else. I’ll wear jeans when it’s 25 degrees. I rarely have bare legs (also horrendously pale) and in winter I hate tights as they never seem to be available in low rise so cut across my stomach. I also find dresses a bit girly for my style although am considering experimenting with a dress over jeans.

CaveMum · 06/06/2021 12:58

Link for the Snag Chub Rub shorts (they’re going to wonder why there’s a sudden surge in visitors via Mumsnet!): snagtights.com/collections/80-denier-opaque-chub-rub-shorts

They come in loads of different colours. I don’t use them myself but I do love their tights which are seemingly indestructible and by far the comfiest I’ve ever owned!

toastjam · 06/06/2021 12:59

It definitely requires more thought. With a dress I have to consider things like:

Shaving legs, underarms
Socks and trainers, or flats, or sandals?
Strappy, or sleeves, then what bra?
What jacket to go with it?
What about vpl?

MareofBeasttown · 06/06/2021 13:03

I never wore dresses, ever, until this year ( I am 49). But I have splashed out on 3 or 4 summer dresses and am finding them very comfortable for a lockdown tummy. It involves a lot of buying and returning though, as I pick my way through the wasteland of polyester, puff sleeves, tiers and empire waists, and try to figure out what suits me.

partyatthepalace · 06/06/2021 13:04

All the time. Easily as comfortable as jeans and you don’t have to match anything to anything. One item and you’re done.

burnoutbabe · 06/06/2021 13:07

I wear a skirt around the house as it's nice and cool. I'd not wear it out the house though as I'd have to wear tights etc.

Which is probably why I hate dresses, I prefer legs covered and not have to think about tights/ladders etc

gavisconismyfriend · 06/06/2021 13:08

I wear dresses all the time if I’m leaving the house - don’t need to work out tops and bottoms matching, am on the large side so a linen shift is both cool and unrevealing. Love dresses, love pjs. Not keen on much else due to shape/comfort!

MrsBunHat · 06/06/2021 13:11

Yes I love an everyday dress, though I find it much easier to do in summer - in winter I worry about what tights, cardie, footwear etc will work, but in summer you really can just throw it on, add sandals or trainers and go.

My best "don't think about it" throw-on dresses are maxi or midi, simple, jersey or viscose, usually floral or other print, or plain black.
Here's a good example from hush

and ome from weekday

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/06/2021 13:16

Live in dresses. Day and night. I threw out my jeans and never had joggers.

Arbadacarba · 06/06/2021 13:19

Most of my clothes are dresses! I wear skirts sometimes but I don't even own a pair of trousers (that fit me - I've got a couple of pairs of too-small jeans somewhere at the back of a drawer). As pp have said, if it's cold you can just put a cardigan on or thick wool tights in winter. I've got a vast range of dresses - ancient ones to wear around the house, everyday summer and winter dresses, smart 'work' dresses and occasion dresses.

mybrainhertz · 06/06/2021 13:19

I went to matalan last week and bought two dresses on a whim, as I never, ever wear them or skirts. I wore one of the dresses the other day and it was nice because I felt cooler and not as restricted. I'm early 50s with a lousy figure, but the feeling was so nice I'll do it again 😀

Dh was shocked when he saw me in the dress though. He was like "who is this woman?" 😆

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 06/06/2021 13:19

I only wear dresses. Mostly jersey ones with pockets. In the winter with tights or leggings, cardigans and boots, in the summer with Birks, sometimes short leggings, mostly without.

It's all super comfy - no different to joggers and sweatshirts really.

DoodleBelle · 06/06/2021 13:21

I wear dresses all the time, also like joggers for relaxing. I don’t own jeans.

earminted · 06/06/2021 13:23

I feel all wrong in feminine clothes, like I'm in drag. DH would faint if I put a frock on.

PattyPan · 06/06/2021 13:24

I wear dresses a lot, I find them more comfortable than trousers. I have several of the same jersey dress from h&m that I bought a few years ago because I liked the fit (and they have pockets!) so I bought it in multiple colours and wear them with leggings. I also have a lovely soft midi dress from Thought (also with pockets!) that I’ve been wearing a lot lately. I too am too short/fat for maxi dresses though so I avoid them.
