Let me explain.

I'm a very casual dresser. You'll find me in joggers, jeans and Hush harem pants, with a t shirt or sweatshirt, weather dependent. And I stick to this uniform all year round

I don't own a single dress - well, I didn't until yesterday. When on a whim I bought 3. And I've put one on today and I keep inwardly thinking ' OH MY GOD! I'm wearing a dress!' as it feels so alien to me to do so. Like I should be going to a bloody garden party or something - and this is just a jersey midi dress with nicely covering short sleeves and goes well with trainers etc

So .. what do you wear day to day if you're not leaving the house? Would you even consider putting a dress on?

The past couple of summers, yes. I think it helps to try on a range of styles and lengths if you are not sure about wearing more dresses. For example I look better in dresses that have a high waist as long as they aren't too bulky at the front.

Notadramallama · 06/06/2021 18:32

I wear dresses lots of the time and have never worn an underskirt in my life!
Most of my recent buys have come from Sosander.

Emmylou1985 · 06/06/2021 18:55

I wear jeans and t-shirts every day unless it's Christmas or a party or I'm feeling rather edgy and then I'll throw on a maxi skirt. But I've lost just shy of 3 stone (down from a size 16 to a 10) and finally quit smoking, as well as finally getting rid of my toxic ex (not bumping him off. He's DS' father who guilt tripped me into staying friends and then wouldn't give me a second to breathe)... Sorry, rambling.
Basically I decided it was time to start treating myself to nicer clothes. I bought a load of dresses, nice tops, smart trousers... (And apparently have a new found love of sequins?!) But weirdly, I only feel comfortable wearing them if I'm out with someone else. Even if it's just DS. I get really self-conscious when I "make an effort" but I know my new clothes look great on and being with someone allows me to be distracted from my self-esteem issues.
Let me tell you though, the thing that made the biggest impact for me was switching my hoodies and sweatshirts to blazers. Game changer. Same jeans, same t-shirts, same Converse but suddenly so chic.

@SirSamuelVimes

I wish I could be a "just throw on a dress" woman.

But:
Leg shaving
Armpit shaving
Cellulite on thighs
Pasty white skin
Chub rub
Being 5'11" so nothing sits right & is way shorter than its intended to be

All conspires against my dress wearing dreams Sad

I also have pasty white skin but I’m fine with that. My tips are: M&S shorts for chub rub (also good for modesty if the dress is a little bit short when you bend over) and I’ve just got an electric lady shaver because my shower is crap/freezing so I wasn’t shaving because I was trying to spend the minimum time there. But the lady shaver can be used wet or dry so I can just do a quick once over whenever.

I wear dresses all year round. With tights or leggings in the winter. I don't own any jeans or trousers!

Gingernaut · 06/06/2021 19:06

I don't have a dress or a skirt.

I live in jeans outside of work and work in an industry where we have to wear coveralls - trousers are part of the dress code.

Blah1881 · 06/06/2021 19:20

I wear dresses all the time and have loads. The shop assistant asked me today if I was dressed up to go anywhere nice, but I had just been pulling nettles up in the garden. I had full makeup and hair up as well 😀

PurpleFlower1983 · 06/06/2021 19:23

I wear dresses probably 70-80% of the time. Jeans or trousers are more unusual for me.

honeyytoast · 06/06/2021 19:27

Practically I find dresses way easier and more comfortable. However I always think twice before I leave in one purely because of men Hmm

motherrunner · 06/06/2021 19:35

I’m 42 and never left the 90s. I’m a teacher and wear a skirt, tshirt and Docs all year round. In the winter I wear tights. When not in school I don’t wear a bra. So not give a sh*t.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 06/06/2021 19:37

I wouldn't think twice or that it was intrinsically smarter or different from wearing a top and jeans, though obviously it depends on the dress

girlsallowed21 · 06/06/2021 19:39

I prefer dresses to trousers and tops. Mainly because dresses don't usually have waistbands and are more flattering on me and versatile.

I'd never wear jeans at home tbh. Too uncomfortable. I only wear them if I have to go out.

LindaEllen · 06/06/2021 19:42

I wear them quite a lot in the summer because it's cooler, but because I'm not a 'dress person' I do always feel like I'm really dressed up (if you'll pardon the pun) even in just a normal floaty summer dress!

Postdatedpandemic · 06/06/2021 19:55

I have a couple of these, huge pockets with dress attached linen dress

BatshitCrazyWoman · 06/06/2021 20:01

All the time at work. Occasionally I'll wear a skirt instead. Never ever wear trousers to work. Casually, I have lots of dresses and skirts, although I do wear jeans too.

It's so easy wearing a dress, just put it on and you're done!

I am however never knowingly underdressed 🤣

notacooldad · 06/06/2021 20:02

I love dresses and have one on now.
I have dozens.
Today my dress is just an old Jersey summer one from a few years ago. Probably past its best but me and dh have just been relaxing in the house.
If I'm on a day off mid week I tend to put a pair of yoga pants and t shirt on until o ho out.
We are going out later so I'll get changed and I'm wearing a mint green tea dress.
I haven't worn jeans for ages but I have a pair of jeggings that I sometimes wear to work.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 06/06/2021 20:04

I wear a dress every day. If it’s a warm day, a maxi. If it’s a cold day it’s tights and usually a tea dress. On nights out I wear more figure hugging.
It’s become a bit of a uniform in that I don’t really even think about it any more.

writingsonthewall · 06/06/2021 20:24

I do own dresses but rarely wear them and yes feel a bit stupid and overdressed like you.

Noticed today so many people have them on, not sure why I feel weird in them!

SkyDragon · 06/06/2021 20:46

I love dresses, my uniform is dresses with leggings. I don't own jeans, I find them far ti restricting and uncomfortable. And I like to look girly.

Syphonit · 06/06/2021 21:20

I mostly wear dresses.
Summer with flat sandals, winter with boots. In between weather with trainers.
Outfit sorted!
I own one blue and one black pair of jeans and hardly wear them.

shivawn · 06/06/2021 21:34

I wear light summer dresses when the temperature is warm enough to feel comfortable.

I hate tights, especially those skin coloured see through old lady ones uggghhhhh, so don't wear dresses in winter unless its for a night out.

JewelGarden · 06/06/2021 21:42

I mainly wear dresses. Since my c section I can't bear to have anything with a waistband cutting my stomach in half. I can just about cope with sports leggings because they can be nice and supportive but obviously you can't be wearing them to every occasion. Jeans - no way. Cotton leggings are even worse, that horrible thick material that always sags at the knees and gapes round my ankles. Dresses, preferably with footless tights are the only way for me to be comfortable and not look like a slob.

LemonRoses · 06/06/2021 21:46

I wear dresses a lot in summer. I can just throw one on, it’s cool, comfortable and easy.

Less so in winter, but I do wear dresses for work. Far more formal and with heels, tights etc.
In summer I don’t really think about them.

Grumpasaurus · 06/06/2021 21:59

I live in dresses and skirts. I am 5' 3" and a size 16. Large bust. Hourglass shape. Key for me is defining a waist... though I did buy a baggy dress today. I think the dresses you chose are somewhat between totally casual and fancy. You could throw sandals on to dress down. If you like them, wear them!

Auntienumber8 · 06/06/2021 22:09

I have winter and summer dresses.

My favourites are some yumi dresses they are quite loose fitting with cats printed along the bottom on one and flowers on another.
