Let me explain.

I'm a very casual dresser. You'll find me in joggers, jeans and Hush harem pants, with a t shirt or sweatshirt, weather dependent. And I stick to this uniform all year round

I don't own a single dress - well, I didn't until yesterday. When on a whim I bought 3. And I've put one on today and I keep inwardly thinking ' OH MY GOD! I'm wearing a dress!' as it feels so alien to me to do so. Like I should be going to a bloody garden party or something - and this is just a jersey midi dress with nicely covering short sleeves and goes well with trainers etc

So .. what do you wear day to day if you're not leaving the house? Would you even consider putting a dress on?

Or they might be known as playsuits. The ones that look like a dress but are culottes on the bottom.

TheWelshposter · 06/06/2021 15:13

I've started wearing dresses all the time since having my second C section and not being able to get rid of that pouch belly.
I wear maxi or midi dresses in spring and summer, and skater style mini ones in winter with thick tights. I like dresses with a waist tie or belt as they give me more shape.
They are way more flattering and comfortable than trying to button up tight jeans.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 06/06/2021 15:15

@LagneyandCasey

I have lots of summer dresses but this year I've discovered jumpsuits inspired by ladbaby mum. They're a bit comfier around the thighs on sweaty days and better on breezy days than a dress.
Yes, but what about going to the toilet? I wee way too much for them (not to mention i have limited opportunities and a very short time to do it at work)to be practical even if they are the slouchy/easy to take off ones.
CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/06/2021 15:15

My legs are pasty white and often heavily bruised - I am anaemic and owned by a bull terrier, bruises are inevitable.

I don't care. Most people don't notice and the ones that do laugh when I say "bull terrier and zoomies". 😊

SirSamuelVimes · 06/06/2021 15:24

I wish I could be a "just throw on a dress" woman.

But:
Leg shaving
Armpit shaving
Cellulite on thighs
Pasty white skin
Chub rub
Being 5'11" so nothing sits right & is way shorter than its intended to be

All conspires against my dress wearing dreams Sad

ofwarren · 06/06/2021 15:25

I wear dresses all year round.
In the summer I wear them with sloggi long leg underwear so I don't get chub rub and in winter I wear them with tights and cardigans.
I don't wear heels, just sandals in the summer and flat boots in the winter.
I don't feel dressed up in them as I choose casual day dresses, mainly ones with sleeves.
They are so easy to wear. No matching tops with bottoms, no uncomfortable waistbands and you don't need two separate wardrobes for summer and winter.

CaveMum · 06/06/2021 15:25

I have pale, pasty legs often with thread veins showing plus bruises as I’m a klutz and frequently bash myself on chairs, stools, etc! I still wear dresses and can hand on heart say that I have never looked at another woman’s legs and thought about whether she is pasty or tanned. I’m more likely to notice their shoes!

We worry so much about what other people might think, but honestly we’re all too wrapped up in our own thoughts to notice things like tanned legs.

Armpit shaving - I do that anyways in the summer most of the time.

Leg shaving- I do it now and then, plus with maxi or midi dresses a bit of growth isn't as obvious

Pasty white legs - I just don't care. If I get some colour on them in the garden fine, if not ,not.

Maxi dresses benefit

theshadeofgreen · 06/06/2021 15:39

@gurglebelly oh amazing!!!! I'm going to order some now, how's the sizing?

MinnieMountain · 06/06/2021 15:39

I mainly wear dresses. I’m 5ft 10 with a long body, so it’s a pain getting trousers or jeans to fit.

Most of my work dresses don’t need ironing, which makes it really easy.

I’m currently wearing an empire line Patagonia dress. I live in them when it’s warm enough.

@SirSamuelVimes try Boden or Next tall ranges. Or empire line midi dresses. And sod the leg shaving Grin

nokidshere · 06/06/2021 15:49

I wear dresses/skirts all the time, I never wear trousers or jeans. They are easy to wear and comfortable.

kittycat863 · 06/06/2021 15:50

I wear them in the summer because it's much cooler. And sometimes I'd rather throw on a dress than coordinate tops and bottoms in some combo that I haven't worn in the last few days!

JustMeAndWheatley · 06/06/2021 15:51

I love wearing dresses but find them impractical for my normal daily life because of the lack of pockets. I have dogs and need to carry treats and poo bags with with me.

LadyEv · 06/06/2021 15:53

These days I wear dresses as the norm. Mainly because they suit my figure better. Trousers tend to fall down on me for some reason. However, I did go through most of my teens and 20s thinking I was too ugly and fat to wear dresses. My mum had me convinced only thin and beautiful women were allowed to wear nice clothes. Lesser beings such as myself were condemned to wear baggy and shapeless clothing. The killer thing is I wasn't even over weight back then. Wearing dresses gives me a confidence boost and makes me feel
In winter I wear them with leggings and in summer I wear cycle short type leggings to prevent Chubb rub. I also think wearing the right underwear is key to an outfit looking good or not.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/06/2021 15:54

I've just emptied my dress pockets of poo bags, phone, treats and keys. So it is possible, if that's all that is stopping you 😁

annielouisa · 06/06/2021 15:54

I fell in love with dresses when my daughter bought me a Next one a few Christmases ago. I mainly buy from www.popsyclothing.co.uk now dresses for all shapes and sizes and they have pockets. If you are not a dress person they do fab jumpsuits, dungarees and playsuits. I have some super dresses from Dotty P too

MoreMorelos · 06/06/2021 15:56

Can anyone suggest places to buy decent petite maxi dresses? I'm 5ft 2 so "regular" ones trail the floor on me

BogRollBOGOF · 06/06/2021 15:57

I like summer dresses and sandals. Faffing with tights and boots in cooler weather is more effort for casual dressing.

I liked dresses for work, an easy and comfortable way to look smart.

Most days I'm dressed for comfort and practicality. A lot of active wear. I like skorts on hot days.

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/06/2021 15:58

I've always loved dresses but this year I've moved to about 80% dresses. I like Jigsaw (sale only), Uniqlo, Joules, Seasalt, Monsoon, La Redoute and M&S. Wolf and Badger and John Lewis are good too.

I saw a wedding dress programme recently where the bride was delighted to have pockets - let's hope it was a poo bag free zone eh? Though you never know.
Tal45 · 06/06/2021 16:02

I always find dresses emphasise how flat chested I am. They always look awful on me especially as I have a much bigger bum/thighs than my top half. I'm the inverted parsnip! I know what you mean about feeling over dressed in one too, I feel like that.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/06/2021 16:09

I wear dresses a lot - at this time of year midi with bare legs and trainers, short in winter with opaque tights. I have a friend who would only wear a dress to something like a wedding, and always comments on how fancy/dressed up I am.

RuthW · 06/06/2021 16:12

I wear dresses most days. I have one on today and I'm not leaving the house. I don't own a pair of trousers or jeans.

weegiemum · 06/06/2021 16:14

I wear a lot of maxi dresses/skirts. I'm overweight and a long dress is quite forgiving! I have bad scarring/oedema in one leg after a nasty break so like to cover my legs up. I have a neurological illness which gives me weird sensory issues all over my body and dressed are good for that with no tight waist or anything, and I wear mainly jersey which is comfortable and soft.
