To think this is why people’s ideas of portion sizes is messed up.

Watch any diet/healthy eating show and they talk a lot about portion size. I had an M&S butter chicken curry tonight. It costs £4 and comes in what people would commonly believe is a single potion size. I do actually only eat half at a time, mainly because I have it with naan bread, but can easily see why someone would eat one on its own. Yet look on the back and it says, in small print, “portions 2”.

DS has been eating a lot of tinned soup lately rather than more calorific lunches as he is trying to lose weight. But again look on the back and 1 tin is apparently 2 portions. So why don’t they sell it in half tin sizes? You get half tins of beans, spaghetti etc so why not soup.

Many, many other foods are sold in portions of 2, sometimes even 3 or 4. But it’s not clear unless you go looking for it.

If we want to tackle the obesity crisis then why doesn’t it say in big letters on the front “x amount of portions” rather than bury it in small print on the back? Yes you could argue that people should look and inform themselves but realistically, until a person is already overweight, most won’t bother.

While I don’t disagree that people need to take personal responsibility I do think that the way things are packaged and sold has had an influence and that highlighting to people what a single portion is could go some way to making a difference.

@SchrodingersImmigrant

I mean we are moaning about the portion size (me included) on a pack of microwave rice, but we could just cook rice and make whatever portion size we wanted? It's physically impossible to cook exactly one portion of rice😂

My family uses a normal uncooked rice which is sold in indivisual bags you just put in a water. Great for control as well. I don't think I saw the in uk. You just pop them in boiling water, take out, open, done

Uncle Ben's cook in the bag?
tttigress · 03/06/2021 22:45

They know one person will eat it. I think they are being very misleading.

Ditto of you have s 450ml Bottle of coke, on the bottle in all print it says it is 2 servings. Yet these bottles are often sold as a meal deal, everything apart from the small print is telling you this is for 1 person/serving.

After years of trying, I have finally found a mug to measure it in. If I ever break it, I’m screwed.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/06/2021 22:45

Yeah! I looked for them years ago and didn't see them. Then just gave up🙈 Are they in shops now?

Yes, we have those here as well. Uncle Ben does them but can get supermarket own brand too. Family take them camping as its easier to carry and you don't need a sieve to drain it. Good for Scouts and DofE expeditions.

@TheMNChicken

"A FULL slice of cucumber? You fat bastard. Quarter tin of soup does me a week."

No wonder we have an obesity crisis. If I feel hungry at lunchtime I just Google pictures of soup and that does me for the rest of the day. Think of the NHS!

Why are you googling pictures of soup? The calories permeate the screen and go through to your veins you know. This is just pure greed, you will end up being as big as a size 8. For shame!
KirstenBlest · 03/06/2021 22:53

Oh come on Frangi, size 8 is TINY, Marilyn Monroe was a size 16, you know.

All this fat-shaming. As if I didn't feel bad enough about eating that whole lettuce leaf yesterday.

IhateBoswell · 03/06/2021 22:54

I’d be in all out attack mode if someone tried sharing a measly tin of soup with me 😑

Missaljenk · 03/06/2021 22:54

@RaspberryCoulis

OMG you eat HALF a butter chicken with naan? OMG all those CARBS. If I ate that much, I wouldn't need to eat again until Halloween. A slice of cucumber at breakfast and i'm STUFFED for the day.

Do love a competitive under eating thread.

Love this 👏
wherewildflowersgrow · 03/06/2021 22:55

I wouldn't find half a run of canned soup enough. Those things are often a waste of calories anyway-fresh soup is often the same calories for a large bowl.

MyDcAreMarvel · 03/06/2021 22:55

@KirstenBlest Marilyn Monroe was a size 6/8 not 16.

I really think there should be tighter regulations around this. It’s such deliberate manipulation. They’ll say ‘only 199 calories’ on an item that looks clearly, to most people, to be a serving for 1person. It’s so misleading when they then in small print declare the item to be 2 servings.

Also, you go into somewhere like Pret A Manger- which is designed to allow people to quickly grab some food- and they have the calorie info just below each item. I had to break it to my partner that the tuna salad wasn’t 200 calories but a hell of a lot more as what they had listed was per 100grams.
There is no way that design isn’t meant to be anything other than an attempt to entice more people into buying food they think Is lower in sugars/ calories etc than it is.

Dixiechickonhols · 03/06/2021 22:59

I agree OP. I’ve lost 5 stone and am mindful of portion sizes. Agree it’s often in small print how many it serves. Obviously sometimes you will be hungrier and make decision to eat more but sticking to recommended portion is a good start. Bupa has a decent portion size guide online too. I had m & s lamb rogan josh last night (delicious) it said serve 2 in small print. I did eat all as it was 250 cals a portion and I had it with cauliflower’rice’ do 550 cals for my evening meal.

KirstenBlest · 03/06/2021 23:02

@MyDcAreMarvel, no she wasn't and even if she was that would be American size 6-8, which is way bigger than UK size 8, which of course is MY NEWT

Missaljenk · 03/06/2021 23:03

I used to be on a group for mums with babies the same age. I left it when one of the girls said me having 200 calories for lunch was far too much.

I think this thread is silly to be honest. If a tin of soup says 2 portions but you only eat half it’s not the end of the world . To be fair it would probably only be slightly cheaper if they portioned for 1 person as the packaging is most likely the most expensive part.

Nats1984 · 03/06/2021 23:03

Portion sizes are a very personal thing ... DS’s rugby player build Dad easily does in one sitting what I can eat in two days. 7stone 4’11 auntie would take a week to consume that. Thanet have to hit an average and the ‘serves 2 , serves 4 ‘ thing is a rough guide. Also packaging, the cost and environmental impact of making double the units. I think anyone serious about watching their weight, sugar or sodium intake just looks at the numbers and does quick maths?

This has got me thinking

Do people actually eat even more because they're mistakenly believing the lower calorie content is correct and anchoring at completely the wrong number? Unintended consequences eh..?

KirstenBlest · 03/06/2021 23:06

@MyDcAreMarvel, seriously, MM would have been a UK size 14/16 back then, but the sizes have grown so much. Look at vintage sewing patterns if you think I'm making it up.

idontlikealdi · 03/06/2021 23:08

@Meruem

Trust me I slather that naan bread in enough butter to lift me out of the under eating category Grin I do just find a whole one a bit much sauce wise. But it is just an example of misleading sizes/calories.
It is clearly marked though. A single serve according to the pack of cereal for example wouldn't feed a mouse. You can buy single serve cans of soup.
Faultymain5 · 03/06/2021 23:08

@Kljnmw3459

Plate size also matters, apparently they're bigger nowadays and we're bad at estimating what a regular portion looks like when we have a massive plate in front of us.
This is true. These two plates are a prime example of that. The white plate was from a set my parents got when they got married (1981). The blue plate was purchase in 2016/17

Sorry ladies that’s an old picture of the plates. The white with the gold edge sits inside the blue one with room to spare.

It’s quite clear if you enlarge the picture.
