Watch any diet/healthy eating show and they talk a lot about portion size. I had an M&S butter chicken curry tonight. It costs £4 and comes in what people would commonly believe is a single potion size. I do actually only eat half at a time, mainly because I have it with naan bread, but can easily see why someone would eat one on its own. Yet look on the back and it says, in small print, “portions 2”.

DS has been eating a lot of tinned soup lately rather than more calorific lunches as he is trying to lose weight. But again look on the back and 1 tin is apparently 2 portions. So why don’t they sell it in half tin sizes? You get half tins of beans, spaghetti etc so why not soup.

Many, many other foods are sold in portions of 2, sometimes even 3 or 4. But it’s not clear unless you go looking for it.

If we want to tackle the obesity crisis then why doesn’t it say in big letters on the front “x amount of portions” rather than bury it in small print on the back? Yes you could argue that people should look and inform themselves but realistically, until a person is already overweight, most won’t bother.

While I don’t disagree that people need to take personal responsibility I do think that the way things are packaged and sold has had an influence and that highlighting to people what a single portion is could go some way to making a difference.

I have one - just one - dinner plate left from the set I took with me to uni back in the day. Comparing that to a modern one (and not the biggest one either) and the surface area of the newer plate is more than 1.5x that of the old one.

Plus the traffic light system - a good idea when it was introduced, but it took the manufacturers about a nanosecond to find a way round it, ie say that something which is realistically two portions suddenly became 'serves 4'. Which means that the traffic lights, which are per portion, stay in the low bracket for fat, salt and sugar. And in saying something is really only two portions, I'm not that greedy and I'm slim. But their 'portion' sometimes wouldn't feed two mice.

I find it quite puzzling judging portions from a packet. We just eat plain stuff we cook at home like eggs, meat , veg, pasta etc and never measure anything , in fact I struggle to keep weight on us. It’s worth watching the tv programme What are we feeding our Kids?

That show has in the space of a few days, spawned a load of insufferable twats on here who scold us all for eating processed food when they were eating exactly the same until like 4 days ago.

Soup tins have been that size - ie standard tin can size - all my life (I'm 60), and I'd guess for years before that. I don't know if they used to say 'serves 2' on them in the 60s and 70s but everyone knew they did. There wasn't an obesity crisis then so I don't think we can blame it on tinned soup.Confused

When i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes the rules where simple.
8 inch plate. Half veg quarter protein quarter carb. Nothing out of a packet..used stock cubes from health food shop low salt. Lost 19kg in a couple of months. 2 litres of water per day. Diabetes now eliminated. Never hungry but if i need a snack i eat nuts.. portion sizes are the problem . If you must have bread make it brown. Lots of eģgs help too.
I have far more energy too. Have ceased medication now
Only considering the energy levels which have all but dissappeard²

Blue plate = 26.5cm wide
Gold edge plate = 23.5cm wide.

Factor in that’s 3cm all around the plate.
NB: I know there are proper mathematical terms and possibly an equation to work it out but it’s too late to do maths.Smile

Blue area : 561.7cm2
White area : 433.5cm2

Blue is about 30% bigger.

It’s never too late for maths but I have had a beer and I’m using my phone!

I mean, surely you just eat what you want rather than slavishly sticking to what the packaging tells you is right.... If I'm buying food for me and DP, I know what dishes we'd share and which ones we'd want one each. I have no idea how many the package suggests it's for. I just know what's right for us. And of course, the packaging doesn't take into account whether you're going to do extra veg or have a salad with it etc. It's literally just a rough guide.

My DP is big and broad with an enormous appetite - a portion for me and a portion for him do not look the same, even if it's something healthy like salad. A "portion" is such a subjective notion - we all know roughly what a plate should look like in terms of percentage of veg/protein/carbs etc, and if you're cooking it from scratch yourself, presumably you manage to judge what to cook without being told?

It's helpful to have a guide on packaging but that's all it is: a guide. I refuse to feel bad just because the packaging says it's for two people but I decide to eat it all myself.

I'm honestly so fed up with all kinds of things being blamed for the obesity crisis. We sit on our arses and aren't active enough, eat lots of processed food rather than cooking from scratch, plus often eat too much. That's about the crux of it. We're not getting fat because we've failed to scour the labels obsessively to see what a random person thinks our portion of food should look like.

And breathe Grin My son made some BIscoff Rocky Road yesterday. I'm going to cut myself a slice - all this talk of food has given me the munchies. And I'm not even going to check what the recommended serving size is. What a rebel, eh?

I've read about half this thread and it's eye-opening!

Ditch the ready-meals and just cook something!!

Ready meals, whether they're Aldi or M&S are the devil's spawn! We eat a ready meal about once a month (family of 4). Typically a Charlie Bigham lasagna (with salad) when everyone is just a bit tired.

It's ok (and probably the most expensive ready meal on the market) but it's about 30% Argentinian battery beef frozen for ten years, then slathered in way more bechamel sauce and cheese than the average person would cook with.

If you regularly eat/rely on ready meals your weight is going to BALLOON!

I always assumed that those curries served 2 people. Add rice and it's plenty.

I don't think a tin of soup is the problem.

It's the culture of deliveroo or Uber eats & all the take outs. Children having Dominoes, Subway regularly.

As a child of the 70s/80s it was almost unheard of to get a take away other than fish & chips.

I also know lots of people who buy a 10 year old an adult meal in a pub.

I'm HORRIFIED that you fat greedy bastards actually EAT!!! I'm teeny tiny so just smell the meal as it's heating up and that does me for a few days, then feed at least 3 packets to my strapping 6'4" rugby playing son who needs at least 10,000 calories a day or he'd go transparent

I'd actively worry about somebody having half a can of soup given that it's usually max 300 kcal a can and that's a pretty measly and rather depressing meal.

It simply depends on what you have with it. I'd say a main meal is 600 calories, to make up for breakfast being a lot less. If lunch and evening meal wasn't 600 calories I'd lose weight as overall calories would be low.

A can of soup being 200 calories wouldn't be enough for lunch on its own for me.

Also the ready meals in the shop I go to seem to be quite low calorie, honestly too low sometimes. I just looked up one I sometimes get (shepherd's pie) and it's 339 calories. They are all similar to that and sometimes I get frustrated because you feel like you've eaten a main meal yet they're the calories of a snack. TBH I am not hungry and don't really enjoy eating, I wish I could take a pill and it has 2000 calories so I don't know if my views are representative. I wish I wasn't like this as I just am not hungry and if I eat an amount not to lose weight I feel sick and I'm fed up of it now.
