To think this is why people’s ideas of portion sizes is messed up.

Watch any diet/healthy eating show and they talk a lot about portion size. I had an M&S butter chicken curry tonight. It costs £4 and comes in what people would commonly believe is a single potion size. I do actually only eat half at a time, mainly because I have it with naan bread, but can easily see why someone would eat one on its own. Yet look on the back and it says, in small print, “portions 2”.

DS has been eating a lot of tinned soup lately rather than more calorific lunches as he is trying to lose weight. But again look on the back and 1 tin is apparently 2 portions. So why don’t they sell it in half tin sizes? You get half tins of beans, spaghetti etc so why not soup.

Many, many other foods are sold in portions of 2, sometimes even 3 or 4. But it’s not clear unless you go looking for it.

If we want to tackle the obesity crisis then why doesn’t it say in big letters on the front “x amount of portions” rather than bury it in small print on the back? Yes you could argue that people should look and inform themselves but realistically, until a person is already overweight, most won’t bother.

While I don’t disagree that people need to take personal responsibility I do think that the way things are packaged and sold has had an influence and that highlighting to people what a single portion is could go some way to making a difference.

@MasterBeth

Soup is not “very filling”. That is all.
Tinned one? Agreed. My own? Full meal.

I like big soups and I cannot lie... 😁

cherrybonbons · 04/06/2021 12:11

If you want to lose weight don't look at portion recommendations- look at the calories. It's literally there for you to see. I will eat a whole tub of soup recommended for 2 people because the calories work for me....

PattyPan · 04/06/2021 12:29

Interesting thread OP. I like to buy Amy’s soups (in the free from section) and they are a normal sized tin but say on them that they are one portion. I think for other soups it is to do with the salt content rather than calories. DP is underweight and his favourite soup is scotch broth - I had to ban him from having it as his lunch for a while as it’s only about 160 cal for the whole tin but it’s 40% of your daily salt. Seeing that on the traffic lights would probably put people off.
In terms of curry ready meals I think the rule of thumb is that the ones that come with rice are aimed at one person and the ones that don’t are aimed at two.
I am trying to lose weight and DP is trying to gain which makes cooking challenging. Like a PP I bought the cheapo white plates from Ikea as they are smaller and use those for me and bigger, rimless plates for DP to make it easier to differentiate the portion sizes.

DH has gained 2 stone, or more, and suggested using Hello Fresh as his son is using that for portion control

Hello Fresh portion sizes are massive. I was really shocked. And I say that as an over weight over eater.

The calories are stated on the recipe though. We had a curry with rice the other night that was massive but 650 calories. Perfectly fine.
ChangePart1 · 04/06/2021 12:33

I don’t think it matters tbh.

Anyone who is watching what they eat or wanting to lose weight will be paying attention to the label and calorie content.

Everyone else will just eat to satiety and decide how much of it they want and will fill them up.

I’ve eaten both portions of a bachelors pasta n sauce. I feel a bit dirty now.

ILoveShula · 04/06/2021 12:43

@MistySkiesAfterRain

If you look at the fat and calorie content of some of the ready meals - incl. charlie bigham in waitrose and other higher end brands - its shocking. Healthier options is what we need.
There are healthier options. Cook something quick and healthy not a ready meal.

This is the problem though - it’s well known that a lot of processed foods are very calorie dense but not that filling so they trick your body’s satiety mechanisms into over-eating. This can then cause weight gain which might be slow enough for people to not really notice enough to watch what they eat, but it will add up over time, or could cause visceral fat that you can’t see. Think about even something quite innocuous like coconut oil vs a coconut. You’re not going to get fat eating coconuts, it’s way too much chewing. But it’s so easy to add lots of extra calories with coconut oil that does nothing to fill you up.

None of the hello fresh meals are particularly high calorie, we buy the meals for four as the meals for three aren’t enough for me, my husband and my son. None of us are fat, or overweight.

You can't fill up with junk tho

It is designed that way

It's deeply unsatisfying, so you keep eating chasing that feeling of satiety, but it never comes

I don’t think that’s always true. A McDonald’s fills me up. So does a greasy take away. So did the pasta and sauce I had for lunch.

That doesn’t make it healthy to eat regularly of course but you can still be full enough to not eat more after junk food.

Grellbunt · 04/06/2021 13:06

I must be a greedy so and so because I could easily eat the same again after a McD or a ready pasta thing.

That's actually the main reason I don't eat it often. It's so frustrating.

3Britnee · 04/06/2021 13:17

Some people have issues with leptin though, so high carb, high fat things will not fill them up for any length of time.

Grellbunt · 04/06/2021 13:23

Try eating too much banana, or lentil, or spelt bread, or potato, or turnip, or apples though. It's virtually impossible. Is there a naturally occurring unprocessed food that we can easily gorge on in the same way? Nuts maybe. I'm pondering.

Same. I can devour a McDonalds breakfast (which must work out at a good 800 calories or more?) and think I could eat it again!

I could easily eat my own weight in potatoes but imagine eating that much in lentils.

😂 yeah. Peoppe keep saying that. I am probably a freak of a nature or something. Same like "you can't overeat on protein and fat".

Of course they don't taste as "good" as the junk. But then we are back to the sugar/salt/chemicals being added etc....

Oobahdoobs · 04/06/2021 13:34

@SomewhereInAnotherLife

A whole slice of cucumber *@RaspberryCoulis*? Goodness me, I have half a slice every other day and I feel stuffed for 48 hours.
Both of you are doing it wrong, surely you know the correct portion size is one SEED per slice, per day? I can make a whole cucumber feed a family of 6 for a month!

Find it amusing how the teeny tiny haters congregate and get super excited on threads that wish to discuss labeling and portion sizes from the past. Probably reporting back to the other forum on how super cool they were and taking the piss. Not seeing competitive under eating discussions though?

You can rarely discuss anything food related on mn without being accused of competitive under eating. The oh so funny 'I only have to sniff a lettuce leaf and I'm full' brigade always turn up and take the piss.

knittingaddict · 04/06/2021 13:54
