Chairs given away have caused damage, who should pay?

Last year I was given a dining table and due to lockdown I brought the cheapest chairs online to make the table usable. I used them all year for homeschooling, meals etc they have been well used. Metal legs are a bit rocky etc so I went shopping now we can and brought replacements.
Chatting to a friend I mentioned mutual friend was helping me take a load to the skip. Friend asked what I was taking and I said the chairs. Friend asked for the chairs. I explained they were a bit grubby and rocky and were the ones I got last year cheap online so didn't think they were worth the trip to hers for her to then need to skip them soon. She said she still wanted them, so I dropped them off to her about 3 weeks ago.

This morning she messages me to say the chairs have cut circles in the lino. I apologised and said that I was sorry I should have just skipped them when I planned to. She has come back saying I should have known and shes not happy. I called her and explained that on my tiled floor it wasn't something I noticed. Shes replied it was the tiles that have caused the plastic ends to push into the leg exposing the metal leg and caused the problem. Just as I said my goodbyes she said "well you'll need to replace the lino before I move out else you'll need to give me the money I loose on my deposit" and hung up. I've text to say she asked for the chairs knowing they were in a poor condition so I can't give her anything to replace the lino. Shes now blocked me.

So who should pay?

You gave her the chairs but what she did with them (put them on lino) is down to her.

Anyway, she surely would have noticed any damage starting before now if she cleaned the floors regularly?

She sounds a right cf, I'd ignore her.

LouLou198 · 03/06/2021 13:44

She got the chairs for free!!
What a cf. my guess is she has previously wrecked the Lino with something else and she's trying to get it replaced by putting the blame on your chairs!

readingismycardio · 03/06/2021 13:46

Aaaaaand, people, this here is a perfect example of "no good deed goes unpunished". Ofc SHE should pay. WHAT A CF!

sausagepastapot · 03/06/2021 13:49

Honestly, this is psychotic.

Redact · 03/06/2021 13:52

She should pay, no question!

Chalcroft · 03/06/2021 13:53

Not your problem

ditalini · 03/06/2021 13:58

This is almost unheard of. Your CF friend is so unbelievable in her CFery that there is unanimous agreement that you shouldn't pay.

Usually there's at least one weirdo on the thread that will suggest maybe going halves because reasons, but no. Your ex-friend has beaten all records.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 03/06/2021 14:00

This reminds me of a thread on here where an op gave away a coffee machine for free....it broke some time later and the new owners expected op to pay for a new one...when she refused they stalked her on fb...sent nasty messages...slandered her husbands business etc ...people are nuts and its terrifying they walk amongst us.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/06/2021 14:00

Not your friend.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/06/2021 14:08

No no kittycat

But aye. Give her a Biscuit to replace the butties she’s missing for her picnic.

NVision · 03/06/2021 14:26

AryaStarkWolf · 03/06/2021 14:40

Thisisus909 · 03/06/2021 14:43

YADDDDNBU crazy lady

SVRT19674 · 03/06/2021 14:58

Hahahahah, well at least she has a sense of humour!

Doris86 · 03/06/2021 15:11

Tell her to write to Judge Rinder so he can feature the case on his show. He’d have fun with this one.

Viviennemary · 03/06/2021 18:40

I agree Doris86. It would make a great Judge Rinder. You got them free you asked for them. Im going to write it in big.

Imapotato · 03/06/2021 18:46

I say skip your friend. She sounds nuts.

WellLarDeDar · 03/06/2021 18:48

you are not responsible!! she should have listened to you, or checked the chairs over before using them. what a loony. sorry OP. I think maybe she was just trying it on because she needs new floor.

Ohhyeahright · 03/06/2021 19:56

She’s trying it on!

HotChocolateLover · 03/06/2021 20:02

She can raise the money for the new Lino by starting a career in comedy 😝😝

abstractprojection · 04/06/2021 07:21

Doubt any marks go beyond wear and tear

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 04/06/2021 17:37

Nope, not your problem.

She asked for them, you warned her and it’s her responsibility to ensure they’re not damaging the floor

RachandO · 04/06/2021 17:43

She's the one with the lino so she is responsible! When I had mine put down I was clearly told not to drag furniture etc on it. She's a CF!

Babygotblueyes · 04/06/2021 17:46

Her! This is the most bullshit thing I have heard. You gave her fair warning, you did not sell them to her, so it is on her.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/06/2021 17:51

@KatChocolate

My Bombay Sapphire gin glass acted like a magnifying glass and caused a few little scorch marks in a wooden table! Should I demand Asda pay for a new table for me!

Annoying but absolutely my issue (and one to be aware of, gin drinking Mnetters GinWink)

Be glad you’re now blocked, hopefully she’ll see sense soon!

My copa did that on the garden table last summer. DH nearly wet himself laughing!!
