Chairs given away have caused damage, who should pay?

Last year I was given a dining table and due to lockdown I brought the cheapest chairs online to make the table usable. I used them all year for homeschooling, meals etc they have been well used. Metal legs are a bit rocky etc so I went shopping now we can and brought replacements.
Chatting to a friend I mentioned mutual friend was helping me take a load to the skip. Friend asked what I was taking and I said the chairs. Friend asked for the chairs. I explained they were a bit grubby and rocky and were the ones I got last year cheap online so didn't think they were worth the trip to hers for her to then need to skip them soon. She said she still wanted them, so I dropped them off to her about 3 weeks ago.

This morning she messages me to say the chairs have cut circles in the lino. I apologised and said that I was sorry I should have just skipped them when I planned to. She has come back saying I should have known and shes not happy. I called her and explained that on my tiled floor it wasn't something I noticed. Shes replied it was the tiles that have caused the plastic ends to push into the leg exposing the metal leg and caused the problem. Just as I said my goodbyes she said "well you'll need to replace the lino before I move out else you'll need to give me the money I loose on my deposit" and hung up. I've text to say she asked for the chairs knowing they were in a poor condition so I can't give her anything to replace the lino. Shes now blocked me.

So who should pay?

Her problem, not yours. If you lent her a sharp knife and she cut through a work surface because she wasn't being careful would you be responsible? As if, she needs a good dose of reality

MizMoonshine · 03/06/2021 10:55

Hit her with a chair. Knock some sense into the dozy bint.

Boo2012 · 03/06/2021 10:56

You were taking them to the tip, she insisted on having them. Her problem, not yours. Do not pay.

Calmdown14 · 03/06/2021 10:56

Well think this one is pretty conclusive!
I have laminate floors and even though my chairs have plastic feet, I still bought extra silicone cups for them to protect the floor. That’s just common sense -that she should have

thepuredrop · 03/06/2021 10:56

Not your problem. You were disposing of them and said they weren’t of optimal quality, she wanted to take them. It’s her issue if she didn’t notice the plastic had worn away and exposed the metal. I presume she didn’t buy them from you, so there is no contract.

lottiegarbanzo · 03/06/2021 10:56

She's upset and lashing out. Displacing her frustration with herself for not checking the feet or thinking it through. Unfortunately she now associates that feeling of lack of control, failure and despair with you.

Cheeky mare!
I had this with my kitchen step, the rubber had worn away and the metal was beginning to damage the flooring, I bought a new set of rubber feet but pushed a 2p piece into each one, problem solved!

SeraphinaDombegh · 03/06/2021 10:57

Hahahahahahahahaha no she's an idiot! And a CF too.

TableFlowerss · 03/06/2021 10:59

OhSayWhat · 03/06/2021 11:00

She’s crazy.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/06/2021 11:01

MN should invest in a CF emoji for this exact situation.

Who's good at emojifying images?

Chairs given away have caused damage, who should pay?
Wiredforsound · 03/06/2021 11:01

It’s her job to check the chairs were fit for purpose, not yours.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 03/06/2021 11:01

If I'm being charitable I can understand her upset at knowing she's going to be charged for it ultimately. Worry can do funny things to folk.

If I'm being less charitable, she's chancing her fucking arm. I agree completely with a PP who said that somehow she wasn't expected to know that the chairs could cause damage but you were?!

DustyMaiden · 03/06/2021 11:02

Tell her you will give her a full refund.

SmokeyDevil · 03/06/2021 11:02

Not your fault she's an idiot.

hapagirl · 03/06/2021 11:02

Lol. No words. What is she thinking? Show her this thread.

SpaceRaiders · 03/06/2021 11:03

What?! Do not pay her a penny.

BirthdayCakeBelly · 03/06/2021 11:07

No good deed goes unpunished.

louisiannah · 03/06/2021 11:07

Hahaha surely to god she not serious?!! Cheekiest thing ive ever heard Confused

RosaBudDrood · 03/06/2021 11:08

Ignore her.

In fact, i'd probably block her too and cease contact there.

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/06/2021 11:09

@DustyMaiden

Tell her you will give her a full refund.
This! Do not give her a penny - some people’s cheek astounds me!
Ickythefirebobby · 03/06/2021 11:12

And the cheeky fucker award goes to her. It goes without saying that you tell her to do one.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/06/2021 11:12

If I'm being charitable I can understand her upset at knowing she's going to be charged for it ultimately. Worry can do funny things to folk.

I wonder if she's just not good at all at thinking from anybody else's point of view (not that that's an excuse at all). Like all of the people angrily demanding refunds from small businesses that were forced to close because of Covid. Not just trying to find a resolution to a difficult situation, but actually treating it like they were conspiring to rip them off and take advantage "when they know that everybody is struggling financially now" - as if the owners of these small businesses somehow weren't also included in 'everybody'.
