Chairs given away have caused damage, who should pay?

Last year I was given a dining table and due to lockdown I brought the cheapest chairs online to make the table usable. I used them all year for homeschooling, meals etc they have been well used. Metal legs are a bit rocky etc so I went shopping now we can and brought replacements.
Chatting to a friend I mentioned mutual friend was helping me take a load to the skip. Friend asked what I was taking and I said the chairs. Friend asked for the chairs. I explained they were a bit grubby and rocky and were the ones I got last year cheap online so didn't think they were worth the trip to hers for her to then need to skip them soon. She said she still wanted them, so I dropped them off to her about 3 weeks ago.

This morning she messages me to say the chairs have cut circles in the lino. I apologised and said that I was sorry I should have just skipped them when I planned to. She has come back saying I should have known and shes not happy. I called her and explained that on my tiled floor it wasn't something I noticed. Shes replied it was the tiles that have caused the plastic ends to push into the leg exposing the metal leg and caused the problem. Just as I said my goodbyes she said "well you'll need to replace the lino before I move out else you'll need to give me the money I loose on my deposit" and hung up. I've text to say she asked for the chairs knowing they were in a poor condition so I can't give her anything to replace the lino. Shes now blocked me.

So who should pay?

She has damaged her own floor by sitting on a broken chair that she asked for in the full knowledge that it was on its way to the tip. That’s her own problem. She’s a nutter!

Blue565 · 03/06/2021 11:13

She’s nuts, thank your stars she’s not a friend anymore

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 03/06/2021 11:13

Not your fault.

She's blocked you.

Problem solved.

prsphne · 03/06/2021 11:15

I’d suggest saying that you told her they were only good for the skip... she ignored your advice, so damage is on her!

LaBellina · 03/06/2021 11:15

No good deed goes unpunished was my first thought.

Just be thankful that the trash took itself out and took the chairs with them. She’s a massive CF and she has shown you exactly who she is. She has done you a favor actually by blocking you. Good riddance.

HelpMeh · 03/06/2021 11:16

Your friend is nuts. You aren't a retailer. You owe her nothing.

Soontobe60 · 03/06/2021 11:16

She’s blocked you - result!!

woodhill · 03/06/2021 11:16

She wanted them, not your problem

RedcurrantPuff · 03/06/2021 11:16

Her, she’s an arsehole

SilverGoblin · 03/06/2021 11:16

I am left wondering if the friend had already damaged the lino and was looking for a scapegoat in even asking for chairs she was told were knackered.

I have furniture that would scratch my floors. I put furniture glides and pads etc. on the feet.

My floors, my responsibility to protect them.

Does anybody else of a certain age remember the Not The Nine O'Clock News sketch taking off the sometimes tenuous consumer section of That's Life! ?

When somebody bought a fridge-freezer and then, later that week, a whole load of totally unrelated calamities befell them - and they were trying to get compensation from the fridge-freezer shop for being hit by a bus and getting arrested in the street (can't remember the exact specifics)!

"This has absolutely nothing to do with us" Grin

Felifox · 03/06/2021 11:17

I would have thought that her own common sense would have told her that a metal leg without a felt pad attached to it would cut into the lino. We used to put pads under furniture routinely.

abonae · 03/06/2021 11:19

You don't owe her a penny!

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 03/06/2021 11:24

It wouldn't have been your problem even if you hadn't belaboured the point about the quality of them and how they were destined for the skip. It certainly isn't under these circumstances. And as a PP said - she should have known what they might do to lino. You shouldn't.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/06/2021 11:27

She wanted the chairs, she got the chairs.

Her responsibility to check them over to make sure that they are suitable.

You owe her nothing.

What is it they say about no good deed going unpunished?

DreamingNow · 03/06/2021 11:29

She is grumpy that chairs you wanted to put in the skip are not up to standars?
And she thinks they are somehow still yours???

Sorry but she is trying it on.

DreamingNow · 03/06/2021 11:31

@lottiegarbanzo

She's upset and lashing out. Displacing her frustration with herself for not checking the feet or thinking it through. Unfortunately she now associates that feeling of lack of control, failure and despair with you.
I agree with you there.

Esp if she is skint and is freaking out at the cost of replacing the lino.

MrsFlinch · 03/06/2021 11:35

Anyone with Lino knows how easy it is to damage with heavy furniture and chairs, the onus is on her to make sure that they were suitable before using.

My Lino mat is dented and torn from my kitchen chairs maybe I should bill everyone who sat on said chairs that contributed to the damage?

Stick to your guns, don’t pay and tell her to do one!

Pinkylemons · 03/06/2021 11:39

Ha ha what a butter, of course it’s not your responsibility 🙄

Pinkylemons · 03/06/2021 11:39

Nutter, not butter 😂

@MrsFlinch you should do this and feed back to us your replies.... 🤣🤣🤣
Nitpickpicnic · 03/06/2021 11:42

Wow, we all have some of our own personal ‘Covid Crazy’ going on, but this one is prize-winning!

Next CF thread that takes off on MN, make sure you add this. At this level, it never gets old.

Love the poster who said to get the message to her that you’ve thought it over, and yes, you’re willing to give her a full refund on the price of the chairs.

NoMoreAngelDelight · 03/06/2021 11:44

What a cf!!! Do not pay her a penny.

L0bstersLass · 03/06/2021 11:46

@osbertthesyrianhamster

CFer chancer! Fuck her. Block her back so she can't unblock you and harass you. Good for you not being a sap and giving her a penny. Keep her shitty messages, too, in case she tries anything else on. Good riddance to her.
This.
justanotherneighinparadise · 03/06/2021 11:46

Bloody hell. These CFers are like a mouse plague, they just keep on coming.
