To not be concerned about DDs occasional drug use?

saltyskies8 · 25/05/2021 16:18

DD is 27, living in the city as a single professional and has a fantastic social life (in normal times!). We are very close and have the sort of relationship where she feels able to tell me about most things I'd say. Since moving to the city for work a couple of years ago, she's openly told me that her and her friends will occasionally use cocaine or MDMA on nights out or in and that it's very much normal amongst everyone she knows there. DD is otherwise very fit and healthy and personally, I see her drug use as entirely normal for someone of her age group who is young, single and enjoying life in the city.

DH and I got talking last night after watching a series on bbc3 about drug use and I mentioned DDs recreational drug use, which he was not previously aware of. DH is highly concerned and has accused me of being irresponsible for not being concerned about her health and advising she seeks help. I explained my view that most people in their 20s living in the city are doing this and he believes I'm completely deluded and DD has a problem.

I'm genuinely interested to know others thoughts on this? AIBU in not being worried about drug use at this stage in DDs life?

FYI I completely appreciate there are ethical issues in terms of gang crime, county lines etc. but DD and her friends are already well aware of this and I'd rather focus on the health aspect of this for the purpose of this thread :)

@VVKills27

What are you talking about? I laughed at the poster with their odd post about drugs the way it was worded and the content sounded like someone’s nan who reads about drugs in the Mail.
@ThursdayWeld - yes, alcohol is a dangerous, self-prescribed drug that has ruined countless lives. Your point is?
My point, which was not very obtuse, was that getting outraged by people "self prescribing" an illegal drug means nothing. Because people regularly self prescribe alcohol.

I did recreational drugs at her age and Well into my 30s. Haven't for a while but I wouldn't rule it out. Lots of people I know - many older than me - still enjoy very occasional drug use. None of them have a drug dependency or any adverse effects from it.

I know lots of people with alcohol issues however.

@AndroidsAliensAndWizards you do know Leah Betts died because she drank 32 pints of water and not because of ecstasy don’t you? The government banned health agencies from giving advice on how to stay safe when taking ecstasy so she’d just heard drinking water was good......but she essentially drowned herself.

Im sure most of us have done drugs but at least she is being honest, My ds smokes cannabis , he is honest and we are ok with it as long as not regular and not in the house, cigarettes and alcohol are far worse.

I would not worry if it was now and again ,most probably do it, I did at uni x

One bad batch, one hit of cocaine too many can cause a heart attack. Both are easily fatal.

Laughable. Sounds like the 1950’s government scare films about cannabis.

Millions take recreational drugs and millions have a fun time. Youth is for having fun, doing the drugs, hugging your mates, staying up watching the sun rise and feeling all that’s amazing about the universe. Alcohol is far far far higher on the danger list than almost all recreational drugs according to the official rankings of usage versus deaths

ThursdayWeld · 25/05/2021 22:48

Maybe some of the more outraged posters on this thread should move to Scotland, where the SNP apparently want to loosen drug laws Smile

Walkaround · 25/05/2021 22:48

@Serpenta - the point is that drugs being illegal has made them socially unacceptable to a lot of people and alcohol being legal makes it socially acceptable to a massively greater number of people. I think your head is in the sand if you think illegality has no effect whatsoever on attitude and that societal norms are not the biggest influence of all, regardless. Hence, legal or illegal, the biggest problem to society is people like the OP normalising dangerous behaviours, just as society has done with alcohol, despite the obvious harms and countless education programmes trying to convince people that it is a dangerous substance. Our society has abjectly failed to keep control of alcohol use by legalising it.

Imperialheaven · 25/05/2021 22:49

Not normal where I come from nor is it for my adult kids. I would guess drug use is more for teens or early 20s though. At 27 it seems a bit sad and immature but it’s her life !

@ThursdayWeld - What, you think drugs don’t harm your kids?

You are wrong.

Serpenta · 25/05/2021 22:52

Drug stats say otherwise but carry on with your naivete

Nannyamc · 25/05/2021 22:52

This is never right. Its all or nothing. They will.only cease when you make them aware of the consequences. Had this problem with ds and it was only resolved with tough love. Not a penny to.thier name. In 30s rehabilitation has changed this. They need help

Coldwine75 · 25/05/2021 22:52

Just read its occasional, i see no issue with it and bet most are doing it,

Tbh i dont understand why cannabis isnt legalised, its medically and scientifically proven to be much less damaging than cigarettes or alcohol, and everyone in Amsterdam are so chilled and happy !

JustFedUpOfThis · 25/05/2021 22:53

@ThursdayWeld

Do you really not care about the supply chain and the absolute horror of the cocaine gang. Do a little bit of digging - it is utterly horrific. I would much prefer drugs were legalised. Would improve the lives of Of many in Latin and South America.

I really don’t give a fuck about what people choose to do to themselves. But I think it’s utterly immoral to support an industry which literally kills and tortured thousands per year. I really wish cocaine users (and its them in particular as the profits are so high) realised the misery they cause. Every single one of them has blood on their hands.

I did loads in my late teens, 20s and some of my 30s. Absolutely regret it now and would hate my DC to waste her brains on that kind of stuff. I have a 'normal' life now etc but I cringe when I think back - wish I'd had the kind of relationship with my mum where I could have confided in her but she would have absolutely flipped and we would have got nowhere - I'd probably have rebelled tbh. OP you're in a fantastic position to have a proper chat with her about this and likely get through to her, if you wanted to do so Smile
