To be gobsmacked that an interviewee openly told dh that he had looked at our accounts…

On companies house?

Dh did an interview today via zoom and the interviewee openly told him that they had looked at our company accounts on companies house to see if we were a healthy company!

Our dividends are on there and I'm really shocked that he basically admitted to being so nosey.

I know they are public information (which i disagree with) but they do show the company income, how much cash was in the bank and our salary etc.

Dh wants to offer him the job as he had some good qualities, but this has really put me off him.

I know people do look at peoples companies on the companies house, but you don't bloody tell them surely?!

Would you still offer him the job?

YABU anyway to have used the word 'gobsmacked'. There are plenty of actual words that mean the same thing and don't involve being 'smacked' in your 'gob'. Shocked? Stunned? Horrified? Very surprised? Amazed? Any of these sound better,

Is there a full moon tonight?

ChrimboGateauxCatto · 29/12/2021 20:04

That is completely normal and not at all nosey. It speaks to the success of him and his company.

Faywithoutane · 29/12/2021 20:15

Wish I could show him this thread. Hopefully be would run a mile. Good luck with your business.

Faywithoutane · 29/12/2021 20:21

Apologies "hopefully "he" will run a mile"

SheSaidHummingbird · 29/12/2021 20:24

Do you know what might lessen your discomfort at your enormous income? Tipping. Share your wealth, give to hard-working people who are less fortunate than you.

Such a strange thread.

MollyQueenOfSocks · 29/12/2021 20:24

Ugh, let me guess OP, your employees aren't "allowed" to discuss salaries either?

Best advice? Employing has changed. People aren't rolling over and just doing what bosses want anymore and are standing up for better treatment and wages and know their worth. Prepare yourself for that.

Winterflower84 · 29/12/2021 20:25

You're being very unfair. Instead of valuing their inquisitive and research-inclined mind, you're accusing them of being nosey. They were surely checking if you were financially stable - that's what a sensible person would do. Nothing wrong with mentioning it either. Sorry, I think he deserves a better employer.

Xmasprrssiehelp · 29/12/2021 20:25

I would totally a) do this and b) divulge this information. Especially if it’s a small business, shows you have been researching and not one to make risky decisions

Spottyspotladybird · 29/12/2021 20:28

Of course you shouldn’t hold that against him. What he did was really sensible - he researched who he would be working for! Why wouldn’t someone do that?

EbonanzaScrooge · 29/12/2021 20:29

He did a full background on a possible employer to make sure his job would be secure and then was upfront and honest about it. Sounds like good qualifies to me!

However you don’t sound like the type of person that would value such an employee. He’s be better suited elsewhere

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 29/12/2021 20:31

Yabvvvu ! The interviewee would be extremely foolish if they didn’t do this!

Cici22 · 29/12/2021 20:31

I think you are being very entitled. What makes you so important, so desirable to work for. It works both ways. It's employers like you who are the issue. I've made the mistake of working for companies who were not performing well. I lost my job after almost 3 years of very hard loyal work. It taught me to check before hand. So don't be so quick to judge him because you are hiring.

Clarefromwork · 29/12/2021 20:34

Wow you have had some mean comments on here, hope you ignore and don’t let it get to you.
Some people are probably a bit jealous that you and your husband are running a successful business.

OnthePiste · 29/12/2021 20:37

Fully aware this is a ZOMBIE thread but honestly, some of the comments criticising OP's grammar-get a life!! If you RTFT you will realise she was brought up in poverty, had a dire education and left school with few if any qualifications. I think she has done exceptionally well along with her husband to create such a successful business.

SheSaidHummingbird · 29/12/2021 20:42

Maybe OP can update as to whether this young man was employed, and, if so, how he is getting on? Does the OP regret her initial reluctance to hire him?

ChampagneWorries · 29/12/2021 20:46

Wow, didn’t expect this to be resurrected!

Tilltheend99 · 29/12/2021 20:51

Are you worried he will ask for a higher salary based on how much you earn.

You are clutching your pearls op.

Butchyrestingface · 29/12/2021 20:57

@ChampagneWorries

Wow, didn’t expect this to be resurrected!
Since it has been though, how's it going with the new employee?

Enquiring minds want to know. Xmas Grin

ChampagneWorries · 29/12/2021 21:01

Well it’s not a very interesting update to be honest.

He was employed but left after under 2 months. He didn’t like the unsociable hours or that he was permanently working from home. He thought he would love working from home, but in reality it made him feel isolated.

He went back to his previous job as a HGV driver.

OP posts:
Flipflopblowout · 29/12/2021 21:28

He would appear to be a bit more professional about his approach to job finding than you are about hiring. Nosey? Why would he not want to ensure that his possible future employer is solvent and hopefully expanding so that he can tailor his qualifications and experience to suit the role that you are advertising?

Cheers for clearing that up. Smile

On the bright side, less than 30 posts before this thread dies the death...

Frankola · 29/12/2021 23:37

Hilarious.
Potential employee uses his initiative to check if he's applying to work at a stable, healthy company and you want to use this as a reason not to give him the job?

Interviews are a 2 way process you know?
How very short sighted.

Frankola · 29/12/2021 23:38

Oh damn. Ghost thread got me!

AuntyBumBum · 29/12/2021 23:58

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the accounts of companies are documents of public record. Anyone can look at them for any reason.

Goldentimes · 30/12/2021 11:46

Grin hilarious.

So your info is on company house for all to see and you got annoyed that he checked it??????????

And he was a HGV driver and you recruited him to work from home answering phones for 30 grand??????

Really very strange Grin
