Two week holiday, family room, no sex

Timetheworldsaysicantafford · 22/05/2021 22:40

We are looking to book a special holiday for 2022 to Walt Disney World - two young children, and after researching I think the best option for us would be a family room onsite rather than a villa with separate bedrooms. Husband is grumpy because that would mean no sex for two weeks. I'm frustrated because I don't see how that should be the main factor deciding this type of holiday?! Perspective needed!!

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 23/05/2021 10:40

@Foxglovesandlilacs yes, I’d need a lot of sex to persuade me to go there 😃

Onelifeonly · 23/05/2021 10:41

It's clear there are many different opinions in this subject - and different expectations of holidays, so not sure this will have helped you OP.

For the record we generally only booked family rooms for stays of one or two nights. But we did consider our children's needs over ours, because a holiday with disgruntled or bored children is worse than no holiday. It's ok when they're young, do whatever you want them to and go to sleep early (though not so good if you're in one room and can't see or make any noise after that) but as they get older they complain more.

I've enjoyed all our holidays but they haven't necessarily been the kind of holiday I would choose for myself. That's what being a parent is like.

Two weeks at Disney would be my idea of hell so we never did it. One or two days at a theme park is enough for me.

But we are all different, as this thread exemplifies very well.

OP I think the problem is your DH doesn't agree with you. It's not that he's necessarily wrong or right. But you two need to be able to compromise to meet each other's needs / wants.

Randominternetbitch · 23/05/2021 10:43

Re: family rooms- I think the standard room set up for most hotels in the US including at Disney is a room with 2 queen beds which is suitable for 4 people. Whilst it’s not specifically called a family room, I think people are just using that to describe the fact that it can sleep a family of 4.

WorraLiberty · 23/05/2021 10:46

@Ericaequites

Florida is Hell with worse food and less interesting people. Why not go to Boston, visit civilized historic attractions, and enjoy a much better climate?
Interesting post because I thought travel broadens the mind? It clearly hasn't in your case 👀
KitNCaboodle · 23/05/2021 10:48

We stayed at CBR a few years back. 3 chn, 2 adults in one room and it was absolutely fine! You’re not in the room for long anyway.
We were there for 2 weeks then the Hard Rock Hotel for 3 nights. Again, in one room but again, it was grand.
If you’re in the CBR, there’s sliding doors between the sink area and the bedroom area. More than enough room should it be needed.

IEat · 23/05/2021 10:49

If your kids do sleep you and dh will be tiptoeing around trying not to wake them, one room is awful, been there done that .. never again it really is bloody awful.

ImaHogg · 23/05/2021 10:51

I just can’t believe so many people are saying it would be hell staying in one room for just 2 weeks with their own kids ffs! Your own kids. Is sex so important that you can’t hold off for a fortnight?
How old are the kids? I can’t imagine Disney World would be much fun with very young children, it’s an absolutely exhausting holiday. The youngest I’ve been was 21 and that was great, no way would I have taken my kids under the age of 10, it’s horrendously expensive and they won’t even remember it. Kids are just as happy splashing about in a Spanish swimming pool for a fortnight.

@Aprilx there are some at every deluxe resort. Cheaper when renting points, they start at studios and go up to cabins and treehouses. Copper creek cabins are my new favourite with a hot tub when sat watching the fireworks. allears.net/2017/06/19/a-little-preview-of-the-copper-creek-waterside-cabins/
Some links to the 1 beds I was talking about, Disney rack rate is high, but you can save thousands by renting points.

Not as cheap as an off site villa, but it’s as close to a stress free holiday on site as you can get with plenty of room for everyone.

RaraRachael · 23/05/2021 10:59

Disney is such an exhausting holiday, the last thing I was interested in was sex. Up at the crack of dawn to see animals, out late to watch firework display etc etc

It's an experience, not a holiday in the normal meaning of the word

catgirl1976 · 23/05/2021 11:00

I couldn’t stand the idea of one room. Sex would be way down the list of things that would make me feel that way (though would be a factor) but lack of sleep, noise, no privacy, too much stuff crammed into one room, what do you do when the kids have fallen asleep - sit in silence to not wake them etc etc etc

Not for me. I’d prefer a shorter / cheaper holiday we could enjoy

BadMotherLover · 23/05/2021 11:01

I cannot believe any of you think this is acceptable. 2 week holiday no sex. If I were OP's DP I would cancelling holiday.

If I were your DP I would be glad you had cancelled. I would probably cancel the relationship if all you were concerned about was sex.

TrifleCat · 23/05/2021 11:04

I’m slightly amused by the posters who are falling over themselves to tell everyone how they can’t possibly go for 2 weeks without sex, there’s a whiff about it of trying too hard to be honest.

A healthy, happy, loving relationship can survive 2 weeks without sex.

MajesticWhine · 23/05/2021 11:07

Yes sure agreed. But why would you want to "survive" without sex when it's your holiday and your precious annual leave, the time when you can forget about work and truly relax?

What’s “renting points”?

Not everyone is so lacking in self control or considers a fortnight a long time. It will fly by.

But your two weeks’ holiday with no sex is different and a bit crap in my view.
Notmyfirstusername · 23/05/2021 11:17

The rooms have a point per night cost. You can rent points from members to rent the rooms. There are Facebook groups and various companies set up for non members to rent from members, either directly or through a middle man. Depending on time of year or how saturated the market is, you can save thousands, especially on rooms already reserved that members sell on when they decide not to go for whatever reason.
You can rent the rooms directly from Disney if you want free dining etc, but it is usually much more expensive which is why people tend to pick Saratoga Springs or Old Key West which have lower points values ( cheaper).

Kottbullar · 23/05/2021 11:18

A healthy, happy, loving relationship can survive 2 weeks without sex.

Nobody is saying their relationship would break down, nor is it 'trying too hard' to say you want sex on holiday.
My husband is away from home Mon-Fri for the vast majority of the year, so obviously when we are together on holiday we want to make the most of it.

stressbandit · 23/05/2021 11:22

But sex is part of a healthy happy relationship Confused especially if you are doing it a few times a week that must feel like a lifetime of no sex.
I wouldn't be happy I think that's one of the best parts of my relationship personally it's one thing that's never really faltered no matter how many kids we've had or stress we've gone through.
If you aren't really bothered about sex then I can see why you'd leave it but I personally just couldn't.

999Alex · 23/05/2021 11:24

No ur not being unreasonable. It's a really towering holiday so to be honest probably last thing on ur mind when ur absolutely shattered. It would be nice to have another room if it's much more expensive then I wouldn't bother. It's already a very expensive holiday.

Tartyflette · 23/05/2021 11:28

Well, we've done the family room in hotels and we've one the villas with pools.
Villas are miles better. All the ones we have booked have been spacious, well-equipped and very comfortable. Plus the pool! The private pool, people!
The family rooms are ok, don't get me wrong. But the inconvenience of no being on site and driving to the parks from your villa is really slight.
As for the meal plans You get to your nearest supermarket, buy jumbo packs of exotic sugar-laden-- cereal that your kids will love, a gallon of milk, ditto fresh FLorida OJ, big pack of raisin bran muffins (delicious) and that's breakfast sorted.
All other meals you can order in - you'll find loads of restaurant leaflets in your villa and everything can be delivered.
In addition loads of supermarkets ('markets') do a range of hot, ready cooked stuff like whole roast chickens or ribs and dozens of prepared salads. With disposable cutlery etc you won't even have to load the dishwasher.

TrifleCat · 23/05/2021 11:30

To be fair I think I should have included in my post that my DH is in the forces so we sometimes go for long periods without having sex, and I appreciate that my normal isn’t everyone else’s normal.

But I think that is what I was trying to say- sex isn’t the be all and end all of a relationship (or a good holiday!) a healthy relationship can go without it for 2 weeks and still be intimate and loving.

Branleuse · 23/05/2021 11:32

since when is a long haul holiday supposed to be about exercising self control and sucking it up for 2 weeks?
A holiday for the family is supposed to be fun for everyone isnt it? This includes the adults. If your dp doesnt want to, can you go without him, or do you need his help?

If any of you are feeling knackered one day and want to take it easy, youre not really going to be able to in a single room.

NavigationCentral · 23/05/2021 11:38

You speak my mind @TrifleCat - sometimes I read these sorts of threads on Mumsnet and I wonder whether my spouse and I are just completely beyond normal or something.
