Do you iron all your kids clothes?

Had a 'heated' discussion with DM because she doesn't like the fact that I dont iron my DC2's clothes.

I used to iron DC1's as I had plenty of time on my hands but now with another child, a dog and a partner I just don't see it as an important job anymore.

Their clothes look fine, most things are tumbled and then hung straight up so they don't even look like they need an iron, never have I looked at my kids and thought oh god you can't tell I haven't ironed that and never has anybody beside DM ever mentioned it to me either.

I iron all DD's clothes but we don't have a tumble drier, it's tedious!

AdaFuckingShelby · 20/05/2021 19:41

Hahahahaha. The thought never crossed my mind.

@elfcat

What's everyone's secret to getting no creases? If I hang it on the line it's dried creased however much I shake them out. If it's in the dryer it's creased even if it's just as it's finished. I can't use fabric softener as DH has bad eczema which reacts to it. I despise ironing but have no choice!
I just hang my clothes. I hate drawers cos my clothes always ended up a right mess. Hanging is easier. Nothing ever has creases for me.
80sPadme · 20/05/2021 19:44

Seriously though,
Wedding and funeral attendance we wear ironed clothes and for work We iron military uniform as it is regulation.
My teens iron their own school clothes if they want to but we mostly just tumble and hang or line dry and hang.

80sPadme · 20/05/2021 19:45

@Winkywonkydonkey

I iron Hama beads, tend to get the plastic melted all over the plate and then abandon it in the cupboard for another year.

I occasionally use my hair straighteners on DD's school collars

That's actually a great idea for shirts
VestaTilley · 20/05/2021 19:45

No.

DS is a toddler; if we have a family wedding etc to go to I will press a shirt and trousers for him, but otherwise no. My DH does all the ironing in our house anyway (his work shirts) so when DS starts school he’ll just iron DS’s uniform as well, if needed.

I might iron his bedding once he transfers to a proper bed, as ironed, fresh sheets feel lovely; but it won’t be much more than that as his clothes don’t require it.

Oysterbabe · 20/05/2021 19:46

I genuinely don't think I've ironed anything in about 20 years.

I do an extra spin cycle before drying things. I also have a "wardrobe ready" setting on the dryer which helps too.
cupsofcoffee · 20/05/2021 19:49

I meant my friends and family.

But I'm genuinely wondering how you know? Have you asked them all about their ironing habits? Because it's not something that's ever come up in conversation for me IRL before.

I have zero idea whether other people iron their clothes or not.

Fieldsofstars · 20/05/2021 19:50

I iron everything else it looks really creased.
I don’t have a tumble dryer though.

LittleBearPad · 20/05/2021 19:51

If you have to deal with shirts hanging them on hangers from the clothes aired makes a big difference. They don’t gain creases from being folded over the airer.

SarahBellam · 20/05/2021 19:51

I don’t iron. I don’t notice or care whether other people iron. I don’t care if people judge me for not ironing.

LittleBearPad · 20/05/2021 19:52

Sorry that was to Starfish

44PumpLane · 20/05/2021 19:52

Nope, I don't iron anything. My mother was similarly affronted by my lack of ironing so she irons all the twins clothes.

I am very grateful to her for doing this as the kids do look better in ironed clothes, but if she didn't do it I certainly wouldn't, but it would mean I'd have to be more careful when laundering not to overfill the washer and to hang carefully as soon as the washer finishes.

LST · 20/05/2021 19:54

@Morgan12

Yes.

Clothes don't look nice when they aren't ironed. I iron everything.

They look fine. Stop kidding yourself
BlueLobelia · 20/05/2021 19:55

Yes. i have actually talked about this before on MN. I do not have a tumlble dryer firstly to say.

I do not iron my clothes overmuch. But DS1 has a range of SEN issues and has very regular metldowns. I ALWAYS iron his clothes, because my parenting usually gets judged every which goddamned way and if he also then looked crumpled it would just seem worse if you know what I mean. At least when he is melting down in a corner his clothes are in order.

BlueLobelia · 20/05/2021 19:55

It's something i can be in control of. If that makes sense.

Yes it does
BlueLobelia · 20/05/2021 20:00

Thanks. :)

therocinante · 20/05/2021 20:00

I don't iron unless it's for a funeral or a job interview. Couldn't even find our iron for a funeral last week, that was a last minute panic (and pointless as it was an hour away and we were both creased from the car anyway).

I think DH has a steamer he used for shirts when he worked in an office but he's permanently WFH now (and in a much more relaxed industry) so that doesn't get used either.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 20/05/2021 20:01

I don't iron.

TheValeyard · 20/05/2021 20:05

Same here.

BlueLobelia · 20/05/2021 20:07
Thanks
BlueLobelia · 20/05/2021 20:08

actually, I have come over the years to enjoy ironing alot. Pop on a movie, pour a glass of wine and away I go. very meditational. I ironed (with wine) through two Royal weddings (Cambridge and Sussex) Grin

BlueLobelia · 20/05/2021 20:09

that was Thanks to @TheValeyard :) x
